I would like to add to pearlmut's letter about the SCA.  In my limited
experience, the members prefer to state their pastime  as "recreating the
middle ages not as they were but as they should have been".  It is
also not uncommon to find underground hobbits and wizards and such, though
I'm at least fairly certain that these did not exist in the form they
recreate during the middle ages.
