bye bye bill

After reading the net.rumor (ucbernie.2227) about Bill Joy moving to
SMI, I started thinking about writing some ode to our hero.  I got some
ideas; maybe one of you egghead academician research assistant types
could do the grunt work of doing these suckers up in style. (Ah,
research; think of an idea and hand it off to some slave who has
talent.  Life is funny.)

My first idea was sort of "Billy at the Bat."  Here are the first and
last verses:

-----
It looked extremely rocky for the Berkeley crew that day,
The load average was twenty, (guess we shoulda got a Cray),
So when arpa spat a panic; ernie wouldn't run the hacks,
A pallor wreathed the features of the patrons of the VAX.

...

Oh somewhere in this favored land, the SUN is shining bright,
A rogue is playing somewhere, and somewhere loads are light,
And somewhere tools are hacking, and somewhere users shout,
(to pursue a new career, moby William has struck out,)
There was no Joy at Berkeley, moby William has struck out.
-----

My other idea was Ode to Billy Joy (two random couplets):

-----
It was the third of June, another sleepy dusty Berkeley day,
Billy Joy in Evans hacking, his demise just a month away,

...

Mama said Billy Joy, what has happened to your appetite,
Been hackin' ethernets all mornin' and you haven't touched a single byte,
...
-----

By the way, up in Billy at the Bat, is says "moby William has struck
out."  I mean that to be striking out to pursue his new career, not
striking out "letting us down."  (Thought I'd clear that up before people
started calling me names.) I don't fault him for a moment for doing
what ever he damn well pleases, and I wish him good luck.
