Cellular Automata
Here is a (not complete) list of references I dug up recently.  There
is a hell of a lot of literature in this area, just about any paper
will point you to 5 more, each of which will ....

J. von Neumann, "Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata" (A.W. Burks, Ed.),
Univ of Illinois Press, Urbana, 1966.
[I am currently reading this.  It's a very readable book, so far,
he has a sort of chatty writing style, and the editor's notes
reflect this as well.  Probably the original source you should
go to first before reading the other stuff.]

H. Yamada and S. Amoroso, Tessellation Automata, Information and Control 14,
       299-317 (1969)

S. Amoroso and G. Cooper, Tessellation Structures for Reproduction of
Arbitrary Patterns, J of Computer and System Sciences 5, 455-464
       (1971)

T. J. Ostrand, Pattern Reproduction in Tessallation Automata of Arbitrary
Dimension, J of Comp and Sys Sci 5, 623-628 (1971)

W. L. Hamilton and J. R. Mertens, Jr., Reproduction in Tessellation
Structures, J of Comp and Sys Sci 10, 248-252 (1975)

P. G. Anderson, Another Proof of the Theorem on Pattern Reproduction in
Tessellation Structures, J of Comp and Sys Sci 12, 394-398
       (1976)

A. G. Barto, A Note on Pattern Reproduction in Tessellation Structures,
       J of Comp and Sys Sci 16, 445-455 (1978)

I haven't gotten to the papers yet, so I can't really comment on their
content, but these were the ones I selected (on the basis of quick skims)
as being "most relevant".
