Sorry, Andy, it's still illegal in most states, even if hand-carried.
The postal aspect is only important to get the Feds involved.
Specifically, most states have laws prohibiting *any* sort of pyramid
scheme, regardless of the communication medium involved. There was
even an incident in Raleigh a few years ago where the police *raided*
a gathering for the "Circle of Gold" scheme. Glenn Turner (of Koscot
Interplanetary fame) has been served with several injunctions barring
him from operating anything that even looks like a pyramid scheme.
(I don't recall the exact definition of "pyramid scheme"; it's something
involving the necessity of infinite propogation to prevent losses at
the leaf nodes (though obviously a lawyer wouldn't talk that way).)
