Network Diplomacy: an elaboration
After getting the first few responses to my offer for PBM
Diplomacy, I realized that the lack of detail in the article (submitted
in a haste when the idea struck me) may have frightened some people
off. To elaborate:
I am willing to gamemaster a play-by-mail game of Diplomacy,
to be played over the net. I have had experience in gamemastering,
and am consequently looking for the requisite seven players; ideally,
I am also looking for some players to act as stand-byes, in the event
that some of the original players have to drop out. (I shall assume
that those of you who have already replied are interested in being
full-fledged players unless I hear from you otherwise.) This leads me
to a question that came up after I submitted the article: is there
sufficient spectator interest out there to warrant submitting the
in-progress reports to net.games (net.games.dip?) for general perusal,
or would it be better to only bother those participating via mail?
Additionally, I am soliciting advice on what would be a
suitable time-span for a turn. I had originally thought of two weeks
from when the results of a turn are made public to when the next
turn's moves are due, plus a one-week grace period to take care of
retreats, builds, and the like, but I'm not sure. I'm not an expert
on the amount of time it takes for mail to get around the net; could
we get by with a turn every week (with maybe a three-day period for
retreats and builds)? Please let me know.
So anyway, now that you all have some additional info, please
reply if you're interested in participating, acting as a stand-by, or
just spectating. I shall respond via mail to those who get to play
(generally first-come-first-served) with more info to get things
rolling. I shall also summarize the response I get and post it to
net.games.
