Perhaps fighting monsters gets easier on the way up after recovering the
Amulet of Yendor, but that does not happen immediately. I have been a
total winner twice and both times I had committed genocide on the
Umber Hulks. The first time, I actually had two scrolls of genocide,
so I knocked off the Xorns as well. But the third time I found the
Amulet, I hadn't bumped off the baddies and my discovery of the trinket
was greeted by the warm congratulations of the THREE Umber Hulks who
entered the room to spoil my celebration. Needless to say, I died
on level 26.
