Well, these are the rules that I remember.  They may not
be all correct (I assume you mean Conway's game of life?):

1) A filled cell next to 2 or 3 cells lives
2) An empty cell next to 3 (I'm not sure whether it's
  2 or 3 here also) is born
3) A filled cell next to one or less filled cells dies
  of isolation, while one next to four or more filled
  cells dies from overcrowding

[1 and 2 refer to 2 and/or 3 filled cells.]
