Yes, friends, it really is possible to win.  You need several
lucky breaks, and enough experience to make best use of them.
In my case, I kept my strength up, had several good pieces of armor
to get me through Rust-monster territory, saved my enchant weapon scrolls
until I found a two-handed sword,  performed genocide on Umber hulks
and Wraiths, and used magic scrolls and wands to kill my first few Dragons.
I was not a "benefactor" of the invulnerability bug, but by the time
I reached depth 22 or so, I was essentially invincible.

By the way, I counsel against going too deep in search of ever-increasing
amounts of gold; getting out is \\Boring//.

mentioned by fischer:
24,000 of the 38957 came from the sale of +6 plate mail.  When (if) you
get out alive, "the system" buys everything you obtained in the course
of your adventures and adds that to your gold total.  Personally, I would
like to keep the Amulet, and perhaps mount it on on top of my hearth...
