I haven't heard of any dates outside of the US, but if you're interested
I'll try to find out.
Morrissey DID play the first date of the Madness show in London on Aug. 8,
but was booed and had things thrown at him, which would explain why he c
didn't play the next day. Also, at Glastonbury James did a cover of "We
Hate It..."
2. US release dates from Sire. September 1, "Tomorrow" CD single comes out
with "Pashernate Love" and "Let The Right One Slip In" supporting it. On
September 15, Smiths Greatest Hits "Volume 1" CD comes out. The tracks are
"...Charming Man," "William...," "What Difference...," "Stop Me...," "Girl-
friend In A Coma," "Half A Person," "Rubber Ring," "How Soon...," "Hand In
Glove," Shoplifters...," "Sheila...," "Some Girls...," "Panic," and
"Please, Please, Please..." "This Charming Man" CD's are out on September
22, or atleast the first one is. The first will have SEVEN versions of the
song, plus "Wonderful Woman." The second CD will have the single and
"Jeane" and "Accept Yourself." A Smiths home video (rumored to be the com-
panion to "Volume 2" CD) comes out October 13. Ilene at Sire has no idea
what will be on it, but I'll keep you posted. Also, the Japan CD "Your
Arsenal" has lyrics and extra pictures, so lemme know if you can get the
catalog # so that we can order it.
3. Well, Travis is back from London and the "Hangin' With" Morrissey show on
MTV, and his fanzine is out. Its absolutely wonderful, I have never been
this excited. Instead of fluff letters, it has TONS of information:
EXCLUSIVE interview with Johhny Rogan, conversation with Johhny Marr, a
guide to Morrissey's London (list of important places and video shoots),
20 photos (many taken by Travis only a few weeks ago), 40 pages, and lots

4. Morrissey on the charts. Morrissey's LP debuted at #21 on the Billboard
pop charts, which is higher than he or The Smiths ever peaked. "Tomorrow"
is the #1 Modern Rock track in the US.
5. Collectibles. I have received requests for information as to how to get
certain rare items (out of print Moz CD singles, vinyl, bootlegs, etc.)
Matt is a dealer of Smiths/Morrissey items, and has a decent list of both
vinyl and CD, as well as a few other items:

Hey,
My brother who is in Chicago right now phoned me up to tell me about a
Morrissey concert on the 13th of September in Chicago.
Is this true? I would assume that he'll be doing a full North American tour
then.... and not one of those "one off promo gigs".
Shit, last summer when I saw him.... it took me longer to get up to the
place he was playing, just to see the 70 mins. he graciously bestowed upon
us.
I picked up the new album today, and am listening to it right now.... kinda
short (39 mins).. yah, he known for his quick, short albums.. blah. But,
its pretty good though, a bit different... more rockier.
I still think Stephen Street did a great job with _Viva Hate_ and the
ensuing couple of singles..... ever since, Mozzer just hasn't lived up to
it.

Well, it's been 1 & 1/2 weeks and I'm still in love with Your Arsenal. But,
on to other things...
Moz on MTV today! The two songs he performed, "...Fatty" and "Certain People
I Know" were pretty close to the album versions. "Certain People..." was a
little different, with some different words stressed by the man, and I think
the music lasted longer at the end. Great performance. He did take questions,
most of which were pretty bland. I'm sure that someone will transcribe that
part. From what I remember, he was asked if he felt closer to his American
audience since the Kill Uncle Tour (answer: yes), if he had overcome his fear
of cameras (only partly), if he minded people jumping on the stage with him
(no: he thinks it's a wonderful compliment), if the new band had influenced
his new sound (yes, contrasted band arrangement to session musicians), why he
picked Mick Ronson to produce Your Arsenal (Moz is a fan, wanted an edgy
sound), modern poetry, etc. The most interesting part was when one girl asked
if Morrissey missed playing with The Smiths. Crowd sort of booed. Morrissey
said that he felt that once a group ends, they tend to be romanticized, and
then said that if the two groups, The Smiths and his current band (which he
referred to with a sweeping hand gesture as "this") had existed at the same
time, that he would have preferred "this."
Due to Morrissey's twice-occurring reference to the band by that term, I
hereby move that the band be referred to all further Strangeways
correspondance as "This." :-)
On an even less relevant note, I'd like to boldly predict all aspects of the
next album. It will be released within 12 months and have a two-word title.

This arrangement is based on the pattern set by Morrissey and The Smiths'
history of compilation releases, with this one corresonding to The World
Won't Listen. I concede the possibility that one or two singles might be
released between this album and Your Arsenal, in which case allow three
additional months per single before the album is released, and add each
single and one B-side from each one released before the new album, thus
producing 13-16 tracks (no B-sides from the newest single released with the
album). I assume that no further explanation is necessary. Any dissenters out
there? :-)
Since discussion seems pretty dull, here are few questions I'd like
to throw up:
-- Is Morrissey referring to a specific group in "Get Off the Stage"?
-- A specific person in "We Hate It..."?
-- How is Morrissey gaining so much weight on a vegetarian diet? ;-)
-- When Morrissey uses a specific name in a song (e.g., William (...it was
really nothing) or David (Nat'l Front Disco)) is he speaking of someone he
knows? I'm curious about how personal his songs really are.
-- Why on earth did he agree to appear on MTV? He seemed a bit out of place.
-- Who is Charles Richardson?
-- Please don't think I'm ignorant, but who wrote "ere thrice the sun hath
done salutation to the sun"?
I've had more interesting questions occur to me, but I'm pretty tired and
can't think of any right now, so I'll leave it at that for now...

WEA has released the first of their double CD single sets for "This
Charming Man." The set is to be a limited edition, with the second
CD in this set being available "FOR ONE WEEK ONLY". The set is
numbered on the cover in the new double CD boxes.

a posting from Stephen Lee in Manchester
Just in case anyone's interested; David Byrne is touring
England at the moment and played Manchester last week (on
Thursday 23rd July) The road crew told me that he closes
his show with an encore which is a different song each night,
delivered solo. Apparently he also seeks local advice on
possible candidates for this. He chose "Panic" for Manchester,
a pretty good version for a first try, and it was very well
received.
No I haven't got a tape, although no doubt one will appear
sooner or later.
While I'm writing, I notice that Richard Karty in Strangeways
3.3 mentions "A Taste of Honey". To add a little more
about this (although it's some time since I saw the movie):
the play/film is set in Manchester's siamese twin city,
Salford, and the opening few minutes of the film depict
the arrival of a young (Irish?- I can't remember)
woman in Manchester, featuring some long takes of Manchester c.1960.
The woman was I think played by Rita Tushingham.
A Taste of Honey was also notable for its portrayal of homosexual
working class male youth in a period when male homosexuality
was still illegal in England. A film well worth watching.
The theme tune 'A taste of honey' was covered by the Beatles on
their first UK album.

Well, I just bought "Your Arsenal" today for $11.98 on CD in Palo Alto.
I had no idea it was already all out domestically. I am very happy it is.
I was disappointed that "Tomorrow" wasn't a better song. I really wanted
it to be a great song from all of the hype it received on here. But
I still can't figure out how the album ends with that song either.
I would have much rather heard it trail off with "I Know It's Gonna Happen
Someday." I felt the same with the CD version of "Kill Uncle" and putting
"Tony the Pony" on as the very last song, when the previous song was such
a beautiful ending. (I'll remix it when I make a copy on tape for me to
listen to in my car.)
Nevertheless, tracks 1 and 9 have stood out the most for me (probably because
Mark E. Nevin wrote them with Morrissey.) This album is a lot harder than
the others, and I liked that (strange for Morrissey). I love the first song
too much though. And after all these times from listening to it, it is a
good album. It takes getting used to. New sounds like "Kill Uncle."
I was happy there were no lyrics, because I hardly looked at the ones on
"Kill Uncle" because I could understand them all, and they were a lot less
complex than previous. Track 8 can't be touched. It is a very beautiful
track, and I feel the best. I felt track 8 on "Kill Uncle" was as well,
and wish Mr. Morrissey would just !!*!&*!&*&!* play the song live someday.
"The Harsh Truth of the Camera Eye." The comment on the lyrics is because
I feel Morrissey is becoming more cynical on each album. I always seem
to brush off cynics or at least enjoy their jokes temporarily as I am
very much one myself. I just wanted to point this out. I think it's
because Morrissey's growing older. B-)
Anyway, I was really skeptical of the new sound as well. A few songs remind
me a lot of country riffs and the new Elvis singles that have been re-released.
Maybe Morrissey is Elvis. That would explain a lot ;-)
"Pashernate Love" I feel is the best new song I have heard from him yet. I
simply love that song still. For some reason it sounds a lot like a James
Bond song. Ya think? :) I get so many mixed feelings listening to new
Morrissey songs.
I agree this is a good album to play at a loud volume. It brings back
so many memories of the Planet Rockers. I wish Morrissey would play
with Nashville on TV or something. But it sounds more like Punk Country.
:-) Hurm, The Smiths were once dubbed as Punk Folk music.
Remember these are only my opinions. I just wanted to express how I felt
about it, and from reading the previous stuff, I can see I am not alone in
feeling ambiguity from the album. Perhaps as much as when I first heard
earlier Smiths albums.
BTW, I am still selling Smiths and Morrissey posters. Send me mail if you
are interested. I can mail them now that I have found cardboard tubes.
Unfortunately, I'd need some money ahead of time for so I can at least
mail them. It's tight living on my own now. :)

A couple of quick notes. I recorded the last part of "We hate It..."
into my NeXT and then played it backwards. What ever he says in the

They don't seem to be backwards. It was only be a voice quality
recording but when played backwards, the words seemed backwards. If
your interested, I could persue it further - my friend can make higher
resolution recordings. Where in "Journalists" are the other backwards
words?
As for Morrissey on MTV, he was on last night (Friday) on "The Week in
Rock". They had coverage of his apperance in Grand Rapid's Michigan.
I have it recorded if anyone wants a transcript. Kurt Loder said that
he would be on "Hanging' with MTV on Thursday" though, not Wednesday.
I got "Live in Dallas" and it is pretty well done. The two camera
angles are good but we could have used an additional shot from behind
the crowd straight toward the stage. A couple of beers, the stereo
cranked with the surround sound on, a dash of enthusiasm, and you
almost feel like your there. After watching it for the third or
fourth time, my girlfriend and I wondering if that was a scar on
Mozz's stomach or just a singer's muscle pattern. I guess we thank
Davyhulme Hospital for that. I wonder if this incident was the
inspiration for "Tomorrow"?
"Your Arsenal" is awesome and should make great concert material. As
soon as anyone hears anything about Him being anywhere in New England,
be sure to let us all know.

Greetings Yet Again.
Michael expressed concern about accessing the Strangeways arcives at
the quartz.rutgers.edu site for those who might not be real familiar
with the wonderful workings of UNIX. So here's a quick run-through of
how to access the various files on the archive.
For those who don't know, FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is
the primary method to send and retrieve files on different sites (besides
email servers, that is). Anyway, it's very easy to use. At your UNIX
command prompt, type "ftp". This will give you the "ftp>" prompt. From
there, follow the runthrough below to open the site, log in, using your
own email address as the password, and then cd to pub/strangeways. If
you do an 'ls', you'll get the directory of the files on the archive.
Be sure to set the type to BINARY by typing 'binary' at the ftp prompt.
You are downloading compressed files and you'll get garbage if you use
ASCII. Then just type 'get <filename>' for each file you want. If you
get stuck, type 'help' and it'll give you a list of commands. You can
also use 'mget <filenames>' to get a list of files. After you've
finished downloading, you need to uncompress the files using uncompress.
At your UNIX prompt, type "uncompress <filename>". All these file names
have .Z extensions and uncompressing them will remove that extension.
Now you've got readable back issues of Strangeways, all the way back to
when it was just the brainstorm of Michael Massengale and myself :-).
Seriously, I think we started with about 15 people and it's grown to what
it is today, and that was only two years ago! Hopefully many more years
to come.
Final note about FTP, please, please, please use it only during local
"off-hours". The FTP site is used as a regular machine and people need
to use it to run whatever projects they need to do. Try to log in only
in the evenings, like from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, local time (which I think
is Eastern Time in the United States). Keep this in mind if you're
FTPing from abroad. Sorry for the sermon but I've seen many FTP sites
go down because they were over-used. Happy FTPing. Also, many thanks
to David Pirmann for running the FTP site.

Subject: Lyric reasoning
Here's some of my reasoning behind my choice of certain lyrics:
Glamorous Glue -
'First day with the jar you find' - glue comes in jars and I do believe
that I can hear jars clinking in the background
You're The One For Me, Fatty -
'Promise you'll say if I'm ever in your way' - I am guessing that 'fatty'
is a reference to an overweight person and it is quite possible to
get into her/his way
What did you all think of 'Modern Rock Live'? His answers were pretty
vague. I didn't really learn much.
I have found that listening on bad headphones that loose eveything but
the singing has helped me decipher the Great One's lyrics.
