Moderne Forum For Morrissey And The Smiths
Special Subscribers' Poll Edition
Volume Three Issue One
Hello again subscribers, here's the subscribers' poll I promised.
Send all responses, posts, and any other information, address changes,
friends' email addresses requesting subscriptions, etc. to:
[email protected]
I hope my typing is ok, I am still coming down from the religious
experience of a Beautiful South concert tonight! :)
Moderator's Silly Slang:
1. Travis is in England, and his fanzine 'Wilde About Morrissey'
promises to be absolutely incredible! I hope this isn't sounding like
an advertisement, but he has sooo many stories, pictures, and
information to relay, it is very scary! ...But wonderful! He heard
the LP at the "...Fatty" EMI listening party, and said its hard, but
good. A bit of rockabilly, a bit of Glam rock, very hard, loud, and
good. I should be getting the CD single from him any day now, I will
review it but I encourage others to do the same since Morrissey's new
sound may be a bit of a shocker.
2. The LP listening party is mentioned in the upcoming NME, it
supposedly will discuss the new LP and its sound, so keep your eyes
pealed for it.
3. Also about 'Wilde About Morrissey', Travis interviewed a surprise
person while in the UK - I am not supposed to say who it is, only that
it wasn't Morrissey. ;)
4. MORRISSEY ON TOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two dates in the UK are set for August 8 and 9. The general idea is
that he will hit the States sometime in September - I am currently
trying to get hard dates, we will put out a special 'Strangeways' as
soon as I can get ahold of ALL dates, UK, Europe, US, and Asia, and
wherever else he may travel to. If you have ANY information, let me
know IMMEDIATELY, so I can put that bit of news (meat) out. :)
5. New Single: "You're The One For Me, Fatty" is now out on import, and
the a-side is pretty good, very much alike the first single from Mozzer's
new LP. Its almost 3:00 long, and is a "traditional" pop song laced
with some hard guitars. I can't compare it to anything really that
Morrissey or The Smiths have done before, except "We Hate It..." but I
really like it a lot even though Morrissey keeps singing the two short
verses over and and over and then allows a good amount of time for
somewhat unimpressive guitar solos by his band. The b-sides are
interesting, and even shorter. "Pashernate Love" reminds me of "What
She Said", but Morrissey sounds more like he's making an observation
than really speaking from an actively in- volved standpoint. I like
it too, but its different. "There Speaks A True Friend" is a very
humorous song, speaking of "friends" listing all the things people
cannot stand about him. Its very light, with a bit of a rockabilly
sound, and could be compared to "King Leer". I am not overly fond of
it, but I think that Morrissey's new sound is somewhat dictating his
writing style, so the songs are very short and extremely specific.
The single should do well, it has a radio play kind of sound, like the
first song, which gets constant play on the local college radio
station.
6. I just heard from Russ of 'Sing Your Life' who says that Morrissey
will be in the US for a week around the release of "Your Arsenal" to
do a small promotional tour (not musical, just photos and interviews).
Keep your eyes pealed, and tape any radio interviews that he does! :)
7. Also, I talked to a local radio statio that plays Morrissey, and
they are not getting the new single, but have a copy of "Tomorrow",
the last track from "Your Arsenal". Travis said its a really good
song, so call your local alternative/college radio station and ask if
they've got it, and if not, tell them to get it soon!
Michael :)

Well, here it is, the first 'Strangeways' subscribers' poll. I am not
sure when I will finally tally the poll and release it, probably after
Morrissey's North American tour begins to give people enough time and
enthusiasm to reply by naming "all the things you love, and the things
you loathe." Also, I shall hope that by then there will be many more
subscribers to make the poll tally more substantial.
If anyone has any suggested topics, then please send them since I for
the most part put this together myself. Also, I will try to keep a
running total of the poll, so I can send results every-so-often to
subscribers who personally request it.
Also, if you have any questions, please let me know since I have at
least a copy of everything released and may be able to describe
certain rare items if you want to consider voting on them, like the
cover for the "Charming Man" 12". When voting, only place your first
choice, or two tied for first (they will get a half point), and I will
try to publish all the results. Just send a list back with the number
of the topic, and then your choice written after, or you may email me
the entire list back if you like. ONly one vote per person, and all
new subscribers will be sent this poll upon their initial request.
Enjoy! :)
Michael

This posting is an inquiry rather than news...Also, thanks for doing
'Strangeways' and keep up the good work! -Richard

Would guitar player out there feel inclined to post the chord changes
to Smiths and Morrissey songs? It could just be in the format of:
E#m G7 BM7
and so forth - I can figure out repeats and all that easily enough.
I'd like as many songs as you know. Or, if it would be easier to make
a xerox copy of something on paper, I could send you a tape or
something for your effort. Thanks very much!

Great Woods!!?!?!?!?!!?!!?! That show happened to fall on the same
day as the opening of Terminator 2. And, being an Asst. Manager at a
movie theatre, there was no way in hell I could get the night off.
But, that was o.k. because in Oct Morrissey came to Worcester Mass,
and my boyfriend just so happened surprised me with tickets for my
birthday. I was psyched! The day of the show, I was at school... I
went to the ol' computer lab to find a note there....'Ana, call the
Theatre, very important.....' Oh, great, I thought... I'm gonna have
to drive to the show tonight... Anyway, I call to find out that
Morrissey collapsed on stage the night before and cancelled the rest
of his tour..... Talk about being depressedb ... anyway, looking
forward to another tour soooooooooooooooonnnnnnnn.........

Yes! I still have many Smiths and Morrissey posters for sale. If
anyone is interested, now is the time to buy them. :) The thing is
that I just moved, and have too much stuff, and want to sell off some
of my posters. Send me private e-mail if you are interested, and I'll
send you a list of what I have.

I certainly would've thought that there'd be more discussion so close
to the release of the new album! Such as: any reviews of the new
single? I haven't heard the song yet. How are the B-sides? What's the
cover like? Etc.? Etc.?
I've heard a tasty rumor that "This Charming Man" is slated for
release on CD single fairly soon (perhaps just ahead of the "Greatest
Hits" CD?) and will include those hard-to-find remixes.
Well, since I'm stuck in the wastelands of New Hampshire, this is
virtually my only source of Morrissey info. And I'm desparate for
info! So let's keep the discussion going!

"...you can sit in your room for months on end and see nobody,
and cry quite bitterly into your pillow because your phone
never ever rings - and then you suddenly think of those recent
weeks, and of your situation, and you burst out laughing at the
absolute absurdity of life and of expectation."
Taken from a recent interview in a generic British magazine.
