Hey all,
This is my first post so please bear with me. In fact, I am very new to
Morrissey and especially The Smiths (although I have been receiving this
journal since #1). I started liking Morrissey in about the second week of
February. I got hooked when I heard the great song "Everyday is Like Sunday"
from Bona Drag. Now I have "Kill Uncle" and "Bona Drag" by Morrissey and I
just (last week) got "Louder Than Bombs" and "Rank" by The Smiths. Anyway
just last Saturday (March 30) I saw Morrissey's newest release, "Our Frank" in
its typical cd maxi-single form, with 3 tracks. It was $5.99 (US release) and
contained :
1. Our Frank
2. (some new B-side which I forgot the name of, sorry)
3. Tony The Pony
I would have bought it but I didn't feel like spending 6 bucks on one song (as
most or all of you already know, Tony The Pony is available on the
"Kill Uncle" cd. Just thought I'd let y'all know it was out for a reasonable
price in the US (unlike MANY Morrissey singles, which are only available from
England and run you about $10.99 for 3 to 4 songs!!) :( Take care everyone.

In response to recent questions/comments:
The Wolverhampton bootleg is of very poor quality. A compact disc of that
show
is not available, and, judging by the quality of the vinyl copy I have,
should
not be. A quick comparison of sound on the bootleg vs. Hulmerist (Sister I'm
A Poet) will give you some idea of just how poor it is. In Summary: don't buy
this bootleg. Suedehead/Everyday Is Like Sunday single discs are great but
expensive if you c an find them. Two songs on Suedehead aren't available
anywhere else, 'I Know V ery Well How I Got My Name' and 'I'll Never Learn'.
Good Stuff. Has anyone heard 'Journalists Who Lie' off the 'Our Frank'
single? How is it?

I think "Journalists Who Lie" is a better song than "Tony the Pony", but
that's just my silly opinion. Also the "Everyday Is Like Sunday" has
"Sister I'm A Poet " on it and "Will Never Marry", but I think that's
on _Bona Drag_. I wonder why "Sister I'm A Poet" is not on _Bona Drag_.
That was a real good song.
BTW, why are the Suedehead and Everyday is Like Sunday CD singles so
expensive? I've seen them for $11.99 (standard import CD price).
I think the CDs Michael was asking about are the "promotional " CDs
that they distribute to radio stations for free. Of course not all
radio stations play Morrissey so a number fo thenm have come out on
the market. They're really not worth buying since they just have
one song on it. (I've got "Suedehead"). I don't know how much they
are going for, though.

As I sit here and type with all my broken off nails...
I am working on sending Michael my two bootlegs. (Sorry about the delay!) I
got _Our Frank_, and I am very sure I have seen US printings of it, as Tracks
(CD mainly chain store) is selling it for $11.99.
Personally, I love it. I agree completely with Moz when he said the lyrics
were better than _Viva Hate_. "Driving Your Girlfriend Home" is excellent in
its he-said/she-said format. To me this album hits me more at home than Viva
(not that Viva is a bad album!), and the pseudo-happy (and sometimes
dissappointingly generic) background music gives a sharp contrast to the
mocking lyrics. ("Our Frank",
"King Leer".) "Found Found Found" is neat but WAY too short, as is "There's a
Place in Hell...".
What is the deal with "Tony the Pony"? No lyrics, and it messes up the feel
of the album. Putting it after "...place in hell..." is just too much of a
transition.
His voice is wonderful, as usual, but the songs don't seem to stretch it as
much as other songs. Its as if he is singing off a song sheet rather than
feeling the songs. "Angel, Angel" (forget the real title) off of Viva seemed
more of something he experienced as he sang rather than just read. Then
again, if you take "Our Frank" as setting the mood, maybe its more to show a
relaxation time. Don't know, but I love the album. Its really relaxing. (I
suppose that his emotional attachment to each song varies actually. Just
seems like something is different.)

I much prefer the digest version, for two reasons:
1) I can get a big glop of Moz stuff all at once, and peruse it at my
leisure, rather than having messages trickle in all the time, cluttering up my
mailbox.
2) I archive Strangeways and make it available on my BBS in my Music download
section, and it is a lot less work when I can deal with a few large files,
rather than a bazillion small ones.
Also, I have a lot of lyrics and other related musical stuff, about 2 megs,
and I'd like to get in touch with Nicole to possibly swap textfiles. I don't
receive the _other-voices_ list, so could someone please post or email me her
address? Also, if anyone else is interested, I can send you a copy of my
current list. It covers everything from folk and pop to metal and
industrial... but that's not really Morrissey related, so I'll stop.

I'm very interested in it, either by mail or in strangeways. Maybe a special
lyrics-only issue is in order...

Heh, Moz uses run-length encoding compression in his songs, but he doesn't '
use lower case... Must be a new user. :-)

Just wondering about these overflow headers.. are all these people getting
their copies of strangeways, and is there anyway to keep them from appearing
at the end of the digest? Not to bitch and moan or anything, I love
Strangeways, but every time I archive a copy away, I have to manually cut the
stuff out, and there sure is a lot of it. Just curious.
[I'll look into it. We're going to try to fix a lot of things, and come up
with a solution for the problem of
summer vacation. Any suggestions? -M]

- There are actually two lists you can subscribe to. One being moderated, the
other being unmoderated and instantaneous.
To subscribe/unsubscribe to the moderated list, send mail to:

To subscribe/unsubscribe to the unmoderated list, send mail to:
[email protected]
You can access the archives of "babble" and the previous Cure list,
"other-voices", by sending mail to either one of these addresses.
Server commands should occur as the first word in the line. You may also
place a server command on the subject line.
Valid server commands are:
* subscribe
* unsubscribe
* who
* get
* help
* ping
* directory
* cdirectory
* quit
babble-request only looks at the first three characters, so using "sub" for
"subscribe" is sufficient to communicate with the server. The server is not
case sensitive.
**NOTE**
There is a bug in which the way sendmail handles aliases. ALL requests to the
server will come back with an error that looks something like this:
Subject: Returned mail: unknown mailer error 13

IGNORE IT. I have not been able to find a way to fix it. It does not cause
any problems with requests, it just is an annoyance.

- What does moderated mean?
I inherited this list when several people (including myself) started to
complain about the amount of non-related or irrelevant Cure information
filling the spaces between the useful and interesting stuff. Moderated means
that I go through all the submissions to 'babble' and remove what I consider
to be less important, then I mail out a collection of articles in a single
'digest' every day or so. Many people will call this 'censorship'. I
encourage them to subscribe to the unmoderated list. The reason for a
moderated list is that many people would like to receive the mailing list, but
are restricted by either transmission costs or time. These people would like
to receive only the most important information. Thus, if you want to reach
the broadest audience, stick to the subject. I will do no editing of
messages. If one part of your mail is irrelevant, it won't make it into the
digest.
What is in the archives?
If you send a DIR request to the server, you will get back a current
directory listing of what is available. Here is a sample:
discography: A complete discography for The Cure and Robert Smith
history: History of The Cure
tape.offer: A couple of tape offers
ov.archive: This is a directory of the 'other-voices' archives. All files
are in compressed form. If you do not know how to unpack these, ask your
local UNIX guru. Chances are, if you have a specific question about
The Cure, it has already been asked and is contained within.
intro.txt: This file
help.txt: Help on using the server. This file is also sent if you send a
HELP request to the server.
LOG: The log of moderated discussions over the past month. Unmoderated
discussions are not saved. Earlier months are saved as compressed files
with the date for their name.
