A forum for Morrissey and The Smiths.

Volume 1, Issue #4

General Information from Kevin:

Well, it looks like the mailing list is catching on and we can
boast a membership of about 75 people (How about an exact number,
 Michael?).

If you want to post something to Strangeways, send mail to
[email protected].  It would be nice to put a subject
line detailing what you are talking about since I basically
just copy your mail into a file and when the file gets big
enough, send it out.  Please keep the "STRANGEWAYS" header
on the subject line so I can keep Strangeways mail seperate
 from other mail.

If you want to join the mailing list, please send mail to
 Michael.C.Massengale%mac.dartmouth.edu.  Michael is keeping
track of the mailing list so blame him if you don't get a
copy :-).  Just kidding Michael.  Without him, none of this
would have started.  If for some strange reason you do not
want to continue receiving Strangeways, also send mail to
Michael.  I would appreciate it if you didn't send mailing
list request to me from now on since I've got enough mail
 from Strangeways posts.

As Douglas pointed out, we are now starting to get more and more
people from overseas.  Please begin to reference "American" domestic
CDs as "American" and imports by their respective nation of of
release.  We can no longer assume that everyone is from America :-).
I think it's easiest to say that unless you make a specific reference
to a currency besides the American dollar, all dollar figures
shown are in American dollars.  If we find that this gets too
confussing in the future, the policy will be changed.  I believe
right now we have about 10% of Strangeways overseas.

 Well, that's it for now...enjoy.

Sounds great.  Please sign me up (or whatever you're gonna do about it).

As a starter - how about any info concerning the Smiths B-sides
"Wonderful Woman" and any other unreleased songs.  Have you heard this
song?

Also, I heard a rumor a while back that there were plans to possibly
release a collection of Smiths unreleased songs including a cover of New
Order's "Blue Monday".  Has anyone else heard similar rumors?

Finally, I was told that "Kill Uncle," Morrissey's new album, was going
to be released on March 26th.  Have you heard anything?

In Canada, we got "Louder Than Bombs" and "Hatful of Hollow" on Sire
Canada; I'm told that the CD version of "Hatful" is an import, which
means UK manufacture but not necessarily a higher price.  Import laws
are different up north, where the distributor often imports to fill
holes in the catalogue.  Unless a CD is of rare availability in
Canada, you should be paying the domestic price for it (~C$22).

PS: Nicole, you missed the live album "Rank"!

Thanks for the discography, Nicole. What about compilation albums that the
Smiths/Morrissey have appeared on? On the "Just Say..." series from Sire
Records, I've got "Work is a Four Letter Word," "Will Never Marry,"
and... oh, I can't remember the other two.

Kevin, how about putting a "How to post..." reminder in each issue header?

Dean.

Subject:  Mozz peely sessions.

John Peel mentioned trying to get moz to do some peel sessions, but nother
(nothing rather!) seemed to come of it.

Its also unlikely that the smiths did 3 peel sessions, because although
strange fruit dont release all peel sessions to the shops, they only
release records which are gonna sell, and i shoudl think any smiths
session would sell.

Nick.

P.s. Im nick from Wales, im not welsh im from Manchester (so much..etc..)
and am a computer operator in UCW Aberystwyth.  Ive been into the smiths
since about '86 and have got all their albums other than _louder..._ and
all of mozzes.  I thought Bona drag was a good bridge, with all the singles
and b sides, well worth a tenner for the cd.

[ Although they may not have been called "Peel Sessions", the tracks
from the John Peel Show on BBC Radio One are on _Hatful Of Hollow_
(it was listed in the credits ...I didn't even know until I looked
at the CD again).  Someone mentioned this earlier.  (It was Lars
 in Strangeways #3).   =K=                                        ]

Morrissey is only ever credited with lyrics, but I've always felt that he
is being too modest --- he surely has a major part in writing those
brilliant and inventive vocal melodies.   The fact that this aspect of his
songs remains despite half a dozen co-writers is strong evidence for me.

Simply put, it means not assuming your reader is in the same country as
you, e.g.,

  Wrong                                   Right
  =====                                   =====
"I got it for $300"                     "I got it for HK$300"
  "domestic release"                      "Australian release"
"... is not on the import version"      "... is not on the UK version"

[ Thanks...if you didn't catch the opening remarks about international
"etiquette", please read it again.            =K=             ]

I've just heard a song from "Kill Uncle" on the Australia-wide station JJJ
FM.  It is supposed to be in the shops here next week.  On a first listen
"Sing Your Life" appeals to be more than the three songs on the last
single.  Some snippets of the lyrics (as heard by me, of course!):

  Sing your life
Any fool can think of words that rhyme

and

  And those who sing off-key
They stole the notion from the likes of you and me

I've never heard of this before either, but I'm starting to get an idea.  I
recently got flamed for referring to domestic releases (I'm sorry - and no,
Americans DON'T think the entire world revolves around them).

[ Sure they do :-) ]

A couple of months ago, while I was at home for Christmas, the local radio
station played the entire concert that Rank was taken from.  I don't remember
all that much about it, but I do remember that How Soon Is Now? was one of the
tracks.  Has anyone else heard this?  Maybe taped it?  I have a friend in
Texas who taped at least part of it, but I know that it wasn't that great a
copy.

Also, I'd like to see a track listing for Better Live Than Dead.  On the
subject of bootlegs, what other ones are available?  There have to be more
than I've seen talked about here (1).  I've heard of one from Australia that
has the dance mix of This Charming Man, but that's it.

One last thing: I heard today at the radio station that Kill Uncle has
Piccadilly Palare on it. IS THIS TRUE? Morrissey sure knows how to squeeze
every dollar out of a song.  I sure wish he'd stop doing this.  It's getting
too expensive - I want ALL new music on this disc (it'll probably only be 40
min. anyway).  Oh well, I guess I'll never learn...

Michael :-)

[ The new discography, coming out very soon (probably tomorrow if not
sooner) includes the tracks to _Better Live Than Dead_.  I'd like
to see a list of any other bootlegs out there.   =K=               ]

Subject: Strangeways Tape Duplication

Lars,

If you're interested in doing some tape duplications, I can send you
the concert that KROQ played one evening and the Morrissey interview
from KROQ last year.  I'm sure people would be interested.  If there's
a demand, I could also send you a copy of _Better Live Than Dead_
to duplicate, too.

Who is interested in what?
(and what else is there to offer?)

I'm modifying the Smiths/Morrissey discographies courteously typed in
by Nicole and Michael (respectively) to include some of the items
that were missed (such as the bootleg and a few singles I have).
This will be mailed off seperately within the next few days (I need
to check some things at home first).            =K=
