This list is a temporary Strangeways mailing list
that will run during the summer.  I don't want to
be making a lot of modifications to the list
during the summer, so please don't ask to be taken
off of it :-).  It will be removed at the end of
the summer.

I don't know if you guys can get Details magazine out where you be :-),
but the latest
issue has an interview with Electronic about 2 pages long.  I didn't
buy the mag because
$2 for a bunch of ads and 4 pages of info (roughly) is not the type of mag I'd buy.
Some of the highlights, though:
- Marr speaks on Moz
- Marr sez he likes disco
*** his favorite (pop) group is TECHNOTRONIC!!!!

See what happens when you've been Moz-less?? Sheesh.

Completely unrelated:
My girlfriend and I went to see City Slickers with Billy Crystal.
She said "Moz would
love this movie."  It was pretty good - go see it and find out why.

July 10th - 8:30 PM - Jones Beach...
I can't wait!!!

| Dan |

[ Gag...Technotronic?!?!?  That's scarry.  There's actually a real
good interview with Marr in NME (about two months ago) that was
in two parts.  I believe Simon mentioned it.  Probably significantly
 better than Details.                          =K=             ]

Greetings.

News Flash:  Morrissey is going to be on the Tonight Show with
Johnny Carson TONIGHT!!!  It's 7:30 a.m. right now and there are
about 500-600 people standing in line at the NBC studios (they
don't get in until 4:30 p.m.).  Wow.

The new Morrissey single has supposedly been delayed.  Anyone have
any information about why?  Another lawsuit :-) ?

P.S. Did anyone accept to make copies of that tape?
I can do it, but I need to know if there's any interest in it.  How
about sending Kevin
a message saying "yes, I want the tape."  If enough people want it, Kevin can let me
know and then mail me the tape.

Later.

[ The tape Dan is refering to is the KROQ Morrissey session.  I'm working

the latest recording session among other things.  Now that school's out

Subject: morrissey on the tonight show

What a hoot!  Obviously Carson et al. were totally unprepared for the audience
and the reaction... I can't remember anything like that on TV since the
Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show (I was a little towhead at the time, but
still have a fairly clear memory of the hysteria...)  I got the impression
that Morrissey was originally scheduled to appear last (usually the case with
performers not being "interviewed" on the Tonight show?), and that the very
long commercial break that followed Bill Cosby's monolog was due to
reshuffling the schedule etc. to get Moz on and off sooner to calm down the
audience... Can't wait to see him now in Pittsburgh on the 30th (fingers
crossed he doesn't cancel)... The venue for the Pgh concert is really strange--
a small tent-like affair at Station Square, a very touristy conglomeration
of shops, restaurants and hotels.  I was apprehensive about what the music on
this tour would sound like after hearing the descriptions of the CA concerts
as sort of rockabilly in style, but after seeing the Tonight show songs
("Sing Your Life" and "There's a Place in Hell for Me and My Friends") I
think it really works--gives the music a kind of "bite" that I thought the
album/disc/tape was kind of lacking the 1st couple dozen times I listened
to it...

Well, I almost missed the Carson 'concert'.  I turned on the tube at
12 midnight, EST and to my surprise the show was well in progress.  As
I heard: and here's Morrissey! I scrambled for the VCR remote.  It was
pretty good, but I'm not sure I like this new 'rockabilly' style.  I
know he loves James Dean, but you've gotta let go sometime...

I also thought he looked rather old and kinda tired.  Not that he ever
looks terribly energetic, of course!

I couldn't identify his band members - anybody wanna chance a guess?

I am replying to Amy J. Moseley's article about the cancellation of
the Morrissey concert in Austin, TX.  It is very easy to lay blame
with Morrissey for canceling his concert, but in actuality no one
will ever know what truly happened.  I do know that the people running
the City Coliseum the day of the concert were totally clueless.  Many
people had been waiting all day to get in first, the first three fans
arrived at 4 am, yet the folks running the show didn't care one bit
about who was there first and decided to open a second door around
6:00 pm.  If the concert was not canceled I assure you that there
would have been some major fights as to who was going to be at the
stage because the people who were arriving at 6:00pm were able to be
first in the second line.  Obviously those jokers were seriously
uneducated and didn't give a shit about the fans who had waited for
over 12 hours in the heat.  Second, this crap about a supposed fifty
uniformed security officers is just that, a bunch of crap.  Longhorn
security was the main company providing security for the show.  You
are welcome to call them and ask them how many people they employ, and
how many were assigned to the concert.  I don't think they are going
to tell you fifty. I talked to one of the guys who works for Longhorn
Security and he told me a different tale in this twisted story.  He
certainly did not see fifty people there, as a matter of fact he
didn't even see 25 security officers there.  But then, we will never
know the truth.  Now Amy, I realize it must have been very frustrating
for you to fly 200 miles for nothing, but just think about those of us
in Dallas who had the rug pulled right out from under us by the fools
who rushed Morrissey.  I was waiting in line for hours and hours
before the show was canceled, I am not saying that one is worse than
the other but I am not blaming Morrissey.  God knows that Morrissey
loves his fans and when I saw him before he boarded his bus on
Wednesday morning he didn't look like he was gloating because he
canceled the show, as a matter of fact his manager said that
Morrissey was deeply upset about the cancellation.  I realize that
many people were deeply effected by the cancellation of the show, but
why say he whimped out?  Actually, Amy, I think you whimped out for
taking your frustrations out on a man who has only brought beautiful
music to this world.  You should be old enough to realize that the
world is run by suits, the guys in suits messed this one up.  And by
the way, I am one of the fans who cried when they canceled the
concert, as a matter of fact I have been crying pretty much off and on
since Tuesday.  So Amy, in your life there is always going to be
someone out there who cares more than you do, so when you complain
about your $2 service charge, gas, time, and your brother's $50 plane
fare from 200 miles away, just remember that some of us would have
given our very lives to see Morrissey in concert.  And some of us will
never be the same again because that show was canceled.  Actually
Amy, I think you faired much better than a lot of other people, you
only lost a little time and money, some of us lost the little faith in
humanity that we had left.

Thanks for your time,

Darla Kreller

Does anyone know of any good import record/CD shops in the LA/

Hi all,
As Kevin mentioned, I should be getting the tape soon, so as
soon as I do, those who emailed me will be hearing from me.  Has
anyone come up with a name yet??

I came across an interesting ad for an album in Tower's PULSE
magazine:

"This is not a story
This is not a book
This is your life"

BANDERAS _ripe_: Featuring Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner, produced by
Stephen Hague.  Featuring the single "This is your life."

All I know that they are 2 Sinead look-alikes that wear Doc Martens.

Has anyone been to a concert (Moz) lately?  It's been kinda dead on
Strangeways.

Kevin was teasing me about not having a Moz quote in my .sig.  I used
to, but I got nasty mail from some lady.  It was:

"Most people keep their brains between their legs." Morrissey

So for the 2 weeks after that, it was:
"Unoffensive quote pending." :-)

[ How about "There is another world/There is a better world" as a title
for the tape?  I was looking through quotes in the lyrics, but all the
good ones are two or three lines long :-).  BTW, Dan, I think you and
I make up Strangeways right now...I haven't heard from anyone lately.

I've got the lyrics are printed up real nicely and I'm looking to
incorporate pictures of the album covers on it.  Does anyone want to
try to digitize the album covers (greyscale please) and send them
to me.  The other option is to make photocopies, which I was considering
for a while, but that may be more of a problem than it's worth.
Get back to me if you're interested.  I will send out a beta copy
to anyone as long as you include money for postage (should be about
 $1.50).

One final note:  Is it just me or does Electronic really suck.  I
really can't stand Barney "rapping" on a number of the tracks, one
of which they're playing non-stop on KROQ (one of the main reasons
I've been listening to MARS).  God that's annoying.  Granted, there
are some very good songs on the album, like "Get the Message" which
I really liked, but for the most part, it's annoying.  It's not
even danceable.  What does everyone think.

Announcements:  If you missed it before, here it is again.  The
tape Dan is offering to copy is a collection of radio shows that
were done on KROQ radio (106.7 if you ever in LA).  The contents
of the tape is as follows:

Side One:       Morrissey Interview, 1990
               One year Interview retrospect 1991
(songs Ask, There is a Light..., and Suedehead)
               Vini Reiley "screw-up" session:
"I Know Very Well How I Got This Song Wrong"

Side Two:       Morrissey KROQ session 1991
                  There's A Place in Hell...
                  My Lovelife
                  Sing Your Life
KROQ Smiths Concert (from 1986 tour)
               (slightly different than _Rank_ and
                _Better Live Than Dead_)
Morrissey cover of the Jam's "That's Entertainment"

We're still looking for a name so we can put a sleeve together.
Suggestions anyone?

If you want to get this tape, send mail to dan ([email protected])
and he'll give you details.

(I have just returned to the list after over a month away from the net,
so please forgive me if my questions have been asked already.)

I almost like _Kill_Uncle_ now.  Almost.

I'm going to see Morrissey on July 13th at Madison Square Garden.
Can anyone describe what his shows are like?  (I.e., what songs,
how well performed, is he going to cancel)

"Cemetery Gates": where are the quotes from?

What's the tape that everyone keeps talking about?

Are the CD singles worth buying?  I only have "Ouija Board..."
and "November...," but the two songs from those discs that weren't
on _Bona_Drag_ are among my favorite Morrissey songs.  Are the
other "unavailable B-sides" equally good?

[ Yes...I like "Sister I'm A Poet" off of the Everyday is Like Sunday
single.  Remember, Morrissey likes to release singles moreso than
albums.  Some of his best works are b-sides of singles, even during
 the Smiths.                                   =K=                     ]

I like the album, but was disappointed.  I expected some novel kind of Marr/
New Order fusion product, but all Marr's jangle is completely subsumed by
the N.O.-ish compusynth sound.  I _like_ the album if I think of it as the
new New Order album, but am disappointed if I think of it as Marr's latest.
And yes, Bernard's "rapping" is quite the silliest sound.

those of you in Orange County) says the new single "Pregnant for the

It should reach the United States in a few days.  Now the question is
whether or not it will actually come out.  It was originally slated
to come out about a month ago, but for some reason was held up.  Since
I haven't heard anything about it on the radio, it's very unlikely
that the single will be released, but hopefully it gives us something

Subject: Strangeways:Morrissey 6/27 concert
Date: Tue, 2 Jul 91 9:48:36 EDT

I was at the Morrissey concert June 27 in Cincinnati.  It was a good show, but
the Mozz cut it a little short.  The band was only on the stage for about an
hour and then they went to intermission.  The band came back and Mozz told
the crowd that the "security is too tight here and I can't play anymore.
Good Night!!" and he threw his shirt to the crowd and left.  A lot of people
were upset (myself included) that the show was so short.  The security was
a little tight.  As usual, Morrissey liked people to come up to the stage and
touch him.  A few fans got a little excited and tried to pull him off the
stage and got thrown out of the concert.  I'm not one to pass judgement on
musicians and their quirks, but I think that Morrissey should have played a
bit longer.

Some of the songs performed were:

Interesting Drug
Last of the Famous International Playboys
Suedehead (the best song of the night)
Sing Your Life
Asian Rut
November Spawned a Monster
Will Never Marry
Our Frank
There's a Place in Hell for me and my Friends
Driving Your Girlfriend Home (another great song)
Everyday is like Sunday
Angel, We Both Go Down together (not sure of the correct title)

As you can tell, these aren't all of the songs, but he did play a few more
from Viva Hate than I figured he would.  The band was very energetic and the
bass player smashed his bass after one of the songs!!  (does anyone know
who the band members are?)

I may as well jump in on the Electronic discussion.  I got both of the CD
singles by the band and was anxiously awaiting the album.  When I got it, I
was a little dissapointed.  I heard too much New Order and not enough Marr.
There are only a couple of good guitar based songs on the album, (I don't
remember the names) but they barely save the album.  I, for one, really have
liked Marr's work after the Smiths.  I loved the Talking Head's album "Naked"
even before I knew Marr played on it.  Marr really has a good Bo Diddley
guitar sound when he wants to and it shows on Naked.  I also liked his work
on The The's "Mind Bomb" and I can't wait for thier new album (anyone know
when it is due?).

One artists that Marr works with that no one has mentioned is Kirsty MacColl.
I have "Kite" and "Electric Landlady" and both are great.  On Kite, Marr
Co-wrote 3 of the songs and plays on 9 of them.  It is a good album and Kirsty
is a great singer.  Electric Landlady was just released and has two songs
co-written and performed by Marr.  "Walking down Madison was released as a
single and is kind of a heavy song with a killer Marr riff throughout the song.

Has anyone heard the album that Marr worked on with Sandie Shaw "Hello Angel"?
I would like to know any opinions on it before I buy it.

This is to the fellow who complained about the short concert
Morrissey gave because the security was too strict.

How would you like to go to a concert that was cancelled 45 minutes
before the show because he felt it was too lax (got mobbed the
night before in Dallas and left in an ambulance)?

I mean what is the deal?  I love the man's music but if he is
sooooo picky about security why not hire his own force?  The
security that was so strict probably heard about everyone here
in Austin (the tix co, the promoter) who lost money because
Morrissey felt that security to lax.

As this was my first opportunity to see Morrissey, I was just
a little upset that he didn't show.

Is this a regular problem?  I wish I would have known before I

Subject: Morrissey on Muchmusic

Any news on Morrissey shows being broadcast on MuchMusic (the
Canadian Music channel) ??

They did mention (on City Limits, the "alternative" music show)
that his Toronto show might be shown later.

I've been tied up with various things recently so I haven't contributed to
Strangeways Summer Discussion much.  I see it's doing really well (better
than the regular Strangeways?).

The only one who appears to have a `history' is ex-Polecat Baz Boorer.  The
others are just guys that Moz met in a rockabilly club (along with BB).

Moving on to new stuff...  Moz is playing a whole bunch of gigs in this
country (UK) this month (the ticket prices are extortionate).  Pregnant for
the Last Time is now due out 15 July with an altered track listing.  The T-Rex
song Cosmic Dancer (the one he did with David Bowie in LA) should be included.
Tim Broad has filmed the west coast gigs, including Bowie's appearance, for
transmission by MTV this month.  Now I thought that this film was then going
to get a commercial release but I've also read that "Morrissey's own `Truth or
Dare' film is due for imminent release by Palace" so I'm not sure what is or
isn't to be released.  Can anyone clear this up?
