MEMORIES - MY YEARS OF THEATREGOING 1955-1999 - Part 7

In 1966, I returned to New York twice, and saw Cactus Flower with Lauren =
Bacall, Barry Nelson, Marsha Mason and Brenda Vaccarro; Bob Fosse's =
great Sweet Charity starring Gwen Verdon, Ruth Buzzi, Lee Roy Reams, =
Thelma Oliver, Helen Gallagher, James Luisi, John McMartin and Arnold =
Soboloff, with sets by Robert Randolph and costumes by Irene Sharaff; =
Frederick Knott's Wait Until Dark with Lee Remick and Robert Duvall, =
directed by Arthur Penn, and after the play we got to chat with Lee =
Remick in her dressing room, and she was telling us how much she loved =
Toronto and visited here as often as she could; James Goldman's The Lion =
in Winter, with Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris, with Christopher =
Walken; It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman, with Bob Holiday, Jack =
Cassidy, Patricia Marand and Linda Lavin, choreographed by Ernest Flatt, =
who had the flying challenge and directed by Harold Prince, with sets =
and lighting by Robert Randolph; Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance, =
which won a Pulitzer Prize, and the fabulous Mame, by Jerry Herman, with =
Angela Lansbury, Beatrice Arthur, Jane Connell, choreographed by Onna =
White, sets by William and Jean Eckart, under the direction of George =
Saks' Tennessee Williams The Rose Tattoo, with Maureeen Stapleton, Harry =
Guardino, Maria Tucci and Christopher Walken; Mike Nichol's brilliant =
The Apple Tree, with a tremendous performance by Barbara Harris, Alan =
Alda and Larry Blyden, music and lyrics by Jerry Boch and Sheldon =
Harnick; Christopher Isherwood's inspired Cabaret, based on his I Am a =
Camera, and winner of Tonys for costumes, composer, supporting actor =
Joel Gray, designer, supporting actress Lotte Lenya, director and =
choreographer, as well as the New York Critics Circle Award, featuring =
Jill Haworth, Jack Gilford, Bert Convy, with music and lyrics by John =
Kander and Fred Ebb, directed by Harold Prince; Sammy Cahn and Cy =
Feuer's Walking Happy, with Norman Wisdom and George Rose, a wonderful =
telling of Hobson's Choice; My Sweet Charlie with Bonnie Bedelia and =
Louis Gossett Jr., and a trip out of town to Philadelphia to see Truman =
Capote's Breakfast at Tiffanys with Mary Tyler Moore and Richard =
Chamberlain, with Priscilla Lopez and choreographed by Michael Kidd. It =
didn't come together and failed to make the grade. 1966 may be the best =
year broadway ever had for hits.

In Toronto, we had a production of Ivanov, with John Gielgud, Vivien =
Leigh, Roland Culver, Ronald Radd, and Edward Atienza, also =
disappointing; The Importance of Being Earnest, with John Horton and =
Paxton Whitehead, designed by Desmond Heeley and directed by Marigold =
Charlesworth; The Decline and Fall of the Entire World as Seen Through =
the Eyes of Cole Porter Revisited, with Dinah Christie, Rita Howell, =
Louis Negin under the direction of Jack Creley; Fiddler on the Roof with =
Luther Adler; Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass; Paul Anka who was now =
24 years old; Robert Goulet with his wife Carol Lawrence; the King =
Family; the Supremes with the boss, Diana Ross, the New York City =
Ballet, and Hostile Witness with Ray Milland; a pre-Broadway production =
of Pousse Cafe with Lilo, Gary Krawford, and Charles Durning, with the =
music of Duke Ellington, a notable attempt but very dull; a production =
of Funny Girl with Lillian Roth, Marilyn Michaels, and Isabell Sanford; =
The Odd Couple with Eddie Bracken, Pat Hingle and Phil Foster; Irving =
Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun with the legendary Ethel Merman, with Bruce =
Yarnell and Jerry Orbach; The Subject Was Roses with Jack Albertson, =
Martha Scott and Martin Sheen.

The Shaw Festival brought an unbelievable Zoe Caldwell in the Apple =
Cart, an extraordinary performance by Pat Galloway in Misalliance.

Other Toronto productions were Canadian Opera's Macbeth with Louis =
Quilico and Margaret Tynes; the Lincoln Centre production of Showboat, =
with Barbara Cook, Constance Towers, Stephen Douglass, Margaret =
Hamilton, David Wayne and Ernestine Jackson with sets by Oliver Smith; =
the APA Phoenix company from New York with all-star productions of We =
Comrades Three, The Wild Duck and School for Scandal with Helen Hayes, =
Clayton Corzatte, Donald Moffat, Will Geer, Rosemary Harris, Ellis Rabb =
and Richard Easton.

1967 would bring the Montreal EXPO.

VICTOR VICTORIA

Mississauga is quite a treck from downtown Toronto, but when a major =
musical is playing there and that is as close as it is going to get, =
then you may make the effort. Two hours it took to get there by public =
transportation, but to see the Living Arts Centre, and getting to tour =
the whole complex to boot, was worth the time it took. Across from =
Square One, a major shopping centre, the time went by very quickly and =
it was time to head for the theatre. This production only was on for two =
nights.=20

One can never forget the wonderful Robert Preston, the vivacious =
Julie Andrews, but the cast of this production were their own man, and =
two performers stood out admirably, Deb Martin as Victoria Grant, and =
the show stealer was Ann Burnett Mathews as Norma Cassidy. She really =
chewed up the scenery, and by the second half, Michael Shiles as Carroll =
Todd even began to blossom.

The setting by Robin Wagner, responsible for such hits as Angels in =
America, Crazy for You, City of Angels, A Chorus Line, Dreamgirls, 42nd =
Street, On The Twentieth Century, Promises Promises and Hair, among =
others was brilliant, as was the lighting by Bob Bonniol and the =
costuming by Willa Kim didn't take any backseat to the film. She has =
designed productions like Grease, Will Rogers Follies, Sophisticated =
Ladies, and has been nominated for Tonys for Legs Diamond, Song and =
Dance, Dancin', Goodtime Charlie.

And the music by Henry Mancini, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, with a =
book by Blake Edwards holds the production in good stead, and the =
original songs like Le Jazz Hot, Crazy World, Chicago Illinois and =
Living in the Shadows were complimented by new songs like Paris By =
Night, If I Were a Man, Tust Me, King's Dilemma, Almost a Love Song and =
the title song Victor Victoria.

TALLULAH BANKHEAD (1903-1968)

She used her father's position as a U.S. senator to get a walk-on in =
Squab Farm (1918), followed by a few films, and then back to Broadway, =
with 39 East (1919), Footloose (1920), Nice People (1921), Everyday =
(1921), Danger (1921), Her Temporary Husband (also 1921 as all of these =
plays closed quickly), The Exciters (1922), after which she went to =
England and did more important roles for 11 years. She returned to =
America and did Forsaking All Others (1933), Dark Victory (1934), Rain =
(1935), Something Gay (1935). She finally found some success with =
Reflected Glory (1936), a fiasco in Antony and Cleopatra (1937). In 1939 =
she was very successful in The Little Foxes, and then declined again in =
Clash By Night (1941), only to return to glory in one of her best roles =
The Skin of Our Teeth (1942). This was followed by Foolish Notion =
(1945), and then spent the next four years in Private Lives. Her =
farewell was in Tennessee Williams The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here =
Anymore.

MEREDITH WILLSON (1902-1984)

Mr. Willson will forever be remembered for The Music Man (1957) which is =
just about to appear again on Broadway, and I will hopefully be =
reviewing it for our next issue. Even the filmed musical is a gem. He =
was born in Mason City, Iowa and for several years was a flutist in the =
band of John Philip Sousa. He turned to the theatre very late in life, =
and in addition to The Music Man, was acclaimed for The Unsinkable Molly =
Brown (1960) and Here's Love (1963).

VICTOR VICTORIA

Mississauga is quite a treck from downtown Toronto, but when a major =
musical=20
is playing there and that is as close as it is going to get, then you =
may make=20
the effort. Two hours it took to get there by public transportation, but =
to see=20
the Living Arts Centre, and getting to tour the whole complex to boot, =
was worth=20
the time it took. Across from Square One, a major shopping centre, the =
time went=20
by very quickly and it was time to head for the theatre. This production =
only=20
was on for two nights.

One can never forget the wonderful Robert Preston, the =
vivacious=20
Julie Andrews, but the cast of this production were their own man, and =
two=20
performers stood out admirably, Deb Martin as Victoria Grant, and the =
show=20
stealer was Ann Burnett Mathews as Norma Cassidy. She really chewed up =
the=20
scenery, and by the second half, Michael Shiles as Carroll Todd even =
began to=20
blossom.

The setting by Robin Wagner, responsible for such hits as =
Angels in=20
America, Crazy for You, City of Angels, A Chorus Line, Dreamgirls, 42nd =
Street,=20
On The Twentieth Century, Promises Promises and Hair, among others was=20
brilliant, as was the lighting by Bob Bonniol and the costuming by Willa =
Kim=20
didn't take any backseat to the film. She has designed productions like =
Grease,=20
Will Rogers Follies, Sophisticated Ladies, and has been nominated for =
Tonys for=20
Legs Diamond, Song and Dance, Dancin', Goodtime Charlie.

And the music by Henry Mancini, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, with =
a book=20
by Blake Edwards holds the production in good stead, and the original =
songs like=20
Le Jazz Hot, Crazy World, Chicago Illinois and Living in the Shadows =
were=20
complimented by new songs like Paris By Night, If I Were a Man, Tust Me, =
King's=20
Dilemma, Almost a Love Song and the title song Victor Victoria.
