THEATRE OBITUARIES Just since our last issue, we have lost Peggy Cass, who
will be forever remembered as Agnes Gooch of Auntie Mame, and her
appearance in Thurber Carnival, Sir Harry Sommers, musician/composer
husband of Barbara Chilcott (sister of the famous Donald and Murray Davis
of the Crest Theatre days; Ann Corio, one of the leading burlesque queens
of her day, at 85 years of age. She brought her show "This is Burlesque,"
to the Royal Alexandra sever al times, with a number of burlesque
headliners , the brilliant Garson Kanin, playwright and director, married
to Ruth Gordon, with whom he wrote, and after her death in 1985, married to
actress Marian Seldes in 1990, at the age of 76. Mr. Kanin will be forever
remembered for Born Yesterday with Judy Holliday, directing Diary of Anne
Frank, Do Re Mi with Phil Silvers, and Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand. He
also directed many films and wrote Adam's Rib, The Marrying Kind and Pat
and Mike, It Should Happen to You, The Girl Can't Help It, The Rat Race,
and The Right Approach, Gratien Gelinas, one of Canada's great theatre
personalities, whom I had the privilege of seeing in Yesterday the Children
Were Dancing. He was married to actress Huguette Oligny. Composer Ernest
Gold whose scores graced such films as Too Much Too Soon, On the Beach,
Exodus (Academy Award), Inherit the Wind, Judgment at Nuremberg, A Child is
Waiting, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Ship of Fools, and many, many more.
Lionel Bart, English lyricist and composer of Oliver, Fings Aint What They
Used To Be, and Maggie May. He put English musicals back on the map with
Oliver, at a time when the British musical was near extinct. It is said
that Mr. Bart could not read music. Film Actor Michael Caine, of a heart
attack, probably best remembered for Alfie, The Ipcress File,Sleuth,
California Suite (my personal favourite in the scene with Maggie Smith),
Educating Rita and Hannah and Her Sisters.  They will all be sadly missed.

COMPOSERS- IRVING BERLIN- (1888-1989) At 101 Irving Berlin probably
accomplished more than most of us in four lifetimes. Born in Russia and
emigrating to America while a boy, Irving took jobs as singing waiters, and
began composing songs. In 1911 he won gre at recognition for Alexander's
Ragtime Band, followed by complete scores for Watch Your Step (14); Stop
Look and Listen (15); Century Girl (16); Cohan Revue of 1918; Yip Yip
Yaphank (18) which featured Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning and
Mandy; Zie g feld Follies of 1919. In 1921 he built the Music Box Theatre
and started his own series of revues; others were the Marx Brothers, The
Cocoanuts (25); Ziegfeld Follies of 1927; Face the Music (32); As Thousands
Cheer (33); Louisiana Purchase (40); This is the Army (42); Annie Get Your
Gun with the legendary Ethel Merman (46), which was his biggest hit show;
Miss Liberty (49); Call Me Madam again with Ms. Merman (50); Mr President,
which was a great effort but (62) ended his career with the critics
dismissing the show completely. Jerome Kern said "Irving Berlin has no
place in American music, he IS American music. -

- PLAYWRIGHTS- ROBERT ANDERSON- (1917- ) American playwright born in New
York. His first play," Tea and Sympathy" (53)was a masterpiece and ran for
712 performances. It was the first play I saw professionally, with Deborah
Kerr and John Kerr (no relation). He followed this with a long list of
relatively unsuccessful plays - All Summer Long (54); Silent Night Lonely
Night (59); You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running (67), and I
Never Sang For My Father (68)-

-  DIRECTORS MICHAEL BENNETT- (1943-1987) born in Buffalo, N.Y., he debuted
as a dancer in Subways Are For Sleeping (61), choreographed Joyful Noise
(66) and Henry Sweet Henry (67), and then came the big break, Promises
Promises (68); followed by Coco (69) with the great Katherine Hepburn;
Company, the brilliant Stephen Sondheim musical (70); Follies (71) another
brilliant Stephen Sondheim musical (of which it is said that if everyone
saw Follies that said they did, it would still be running) ; Seesaw (73);
and after a lot of research did his masterpiece, "A Chorus Line (73),"
which ran forever. and is the show for which he will be remembered forever.
This was followed with Ballroom (79) and Dreamgirls (81), neither which
gained any momentum and closed relatively quickly. He was a dynamic force
for the Broadway musical.

Scene (29); Of Thee I Sing (31); Somerset Maughan's Winterset (35); George
Abbott's On Your Toes (36); Abe Lincoln in Illinois (38); Pal Joey (40);

OPERA-
NABUCCO- (1842) - Verdi's opera in four acts, seldom done, based on the
story of Nebuchadnezzar and his capture of Jerusalem. It also tells of his
adopted daughter, Abigaille, and her trials against the legitimate princess
Fenena. This was Verdi's 3rd opera and his first success.

PRODUCERS- JED HARRIS- (1900-1979) A brilliant producer and d irector born
in Vienna, and educated at Yale. He produced Weak Sisters (25); Love 'Em
and Leave 'Em (26), and then the hits started coming with Broadway (26);
Coquette (27); Royal Family (27); Front Page (28). He was a strange man,
and when he invited a n umber of cohorts to discuss rewrites of a play,
they found him naked and he stayed like this all evening. In the 1930s he
produced and directed Uncle Vanya ; The Inspector General and The Green Bay
Tree;Thornton Wilder's Our Town (38), Dark Eyes (43), The Heiress (47); The
Traiter (49); and Arthur Miller's The Crucible (1953). -

THEATRES- HELEN HAYES THEATRE- Originally built in 1912 as the Little
Theatre to house unproven new Broadway plays, it bears the distinction of
initially being designed \par without a box office. When the Helen Hayes
Theatre was knocked down in 1982, the Little Theatre was renamed in her
honor. By Broadway standards, it remains a tiny but charming theatre.
