Lakeshore Drive. It seats 683 and opened with Galsworthy's The Forest. It
disbanded temporarily in 1930 because of the depression. It served as a

THEATRE OBITUARIES

Faubion Bowers, 82, an expert on Kabuki theatre in Japan, died Nov. 16 in
Manhattan.
Mr. Bowers is credited with preserving the art of Kabuki theatre during his
time serving as a military aid in occupied Japan, after World War II. Mr.
Bowers regarded himself both a censor and sponsor of Japanese theatre in
1944-49, when he was official theatre censor of the occupation government;
Quentin Crisp, the gay icon, writer and performer, 90, died Nov. 21 in
Manchester, England, prior to scheduled appearances in his one-man show, An
Evening With Quentin Crisp.
Mr. Crisp, at once fey, diminutive and flamboyant, became the toast of New
York in 1978 with his confessional gay solo show, An Evening With Quentin
Crisp. The solo built on the success of Crisp's landmark autobiography,
"The Naked Civil Servant," published in 1968 and later adapted into a film
that made a star of John Hurt (who played Crisp).
He won a Drama Desk Award in 1978 for "Unique Theatrical Experience" for
his Evening With Quentin Crisp; Beatrice Colen, known as the car-hop on
roller skates at Arnold's Malt Shop on TV's "Happy Days," and as the
"Wonder Woman" sidekick, Etta Candy, died of lung cancer at Los Angeles'
Cedar Sinai Hospital Nov. 18. Ms. Colen was 51.
Ms. Colen's stage appearances include Peter Parnell's Romance Language at
Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum. Her films include Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety"
and Ralph Bakshi's "American Pop." She studied for two years at the HB
Studios in New York under Uta Hagen; Mabel King, 66, who raised the roof in
Broadway's The Wiz, as the wicked witch, Evillene, died Nov. 9 after a long
illness.
Her Broadway credits also included A Race With the Wind and The Women; Paul
Bowles, 88, the author and composer who wrote "The Sheltering Sky" and
collaborated with the likes of Tennessee Williams, died in a Tangier
hospital on Nov. 18. Bowles had been hospitalized there since Nov. 7 when
he suffered a heart attack at his home in Morocco.
During the late '30s in New York City, Bowles wrote musical scores for the
plays of dramatists William Saroyan and Tennessee Williams among others, as
well as Orson Welles' Federal Theatre Project.
The projects he rejected are as famous as the ones he took on. Asked by
producer Lawrence Langner to pen the score to a show which became Oklahoma!
he declined, and later turned down an offer to write the music for Jerome
Robbins' ballet Fancy Free. Leonard Bernstein eventually got the job;
actress Madeline Kahn, 57, died of ovarian cancer, winner of a Tony Award
for The Sisters Rosensweig and starred for a short time in On The Twentieth
Century before being replaced by Judy Kaye, The Sisters Rosensweig (Ethel
Barrymore Theatre, 1993) .... Dr. Gorgeous Teitelbaum
What's Wrong with This Picture? (Manhattan Theatre Club, 1985) .... Shirley

New Faces of 1968 (Booth Theatre, 1968)
and starred in many films like Paper Moon, Young Frankenstein, What's Up
Doc, Blazing Saddles; Director Mike Ockrent, 53, co-creator of Crazy for
You, was working on new musical The Night They Raided Minsky's (based on
the film); Bethel Leslie, 70, stage (A Long Day's Journey Into Night,
Inherit The Wind), screen and television actress;
Anne Francine, the Broadway actress and cabaret performer who was part of
Manhattan's cafe society heyday in the 1940s and 1950s, died in a
Connecticut hospital Dec. 3 after suffering a stroke.
Despite an earlier stroke six years ago, Smith said, Ms. Francine was a
tireless nurturer of young cabaret talent and spent summers as a master
class teacher evaluating cabaret performers at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre
Center in Waterford, CT. Ms. Francine was 82, and lived in Old Lyme, CT.

PLAYWRIGHT - LILLIAN HELLMAN (1905-1984)

The New Orleans playwright whose first play was produced in 1934, The
Children's Hour. This recognized her as a new theatre talent, however her
next play Days To Come (1936) was a dismal failure, but her third play was
her triumph, The Little Foxes (1939) was a huge hit. This was followed with
Watch on the Rhine (1941) and The Searching Wind (1944). She returned to
the family of Foxes, with Another Part of the Forest (1946). She then wrote
The Autumn Garden (1951) and The Lark (1955). This was followed by her
libretto for Candide (1956) and Toys in the Attic (1960). Her next play, My
Mother, My Father and Me (1963) was a quick failure. Her personal life was
probably even more interesting than her plays.

MEMORIES - MY YEARS OF THEATREGOING 1955-1999 - Part 5

In 1962 I was in New York twice. But it wasn't a great year for theatre.
Although I saw a lot of shows, there were only a few of note: I Can Get It
For You Wholesale, which was a bore but for the wonderful performance of a
new star in the making, Barbra Streisand. She brought the house down;
Stephen Sondheim and George Abbott's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to
the Forum, with wonderfully campy performances by Zero Mostel, Jack Gilford
and Donna McKechnie, who would be heard from later as a member of "A Chorus
Line." Fuuny Thing chalked up 964 performances. Other shows were the Martha
Graham Dance Company with Paul Taylor, before he formed his own company,
along with Peter Randazzo before he became a choreographer and star dancer
Clive Thompson; Arthur Kopit's black comedy, Oh Dad Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung
You in the Closet and I'm Feeling So Sad," with great performances by Jo
Van Fleet, Austin Pendleton and a stunning performance by the great Barbara
Harris. Unfortunately Ms. Harris has been seen far too little on stage, and
the films have gotten her effects as dialect and voice coaching in many,
many films.
October 13, 1962 was one of my theatrical highlights, attending the opening
night of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Noone knew what
to expect and the audience was overwhelmed with the ensemble acting of Uta
Hagen, Arthur Hill, Melinda Dillon and George Grizzard. The play just about
brought the house down and at intermission we got to talk to Paul Newman
and Joanne Woodward.
In Toronto we got to see Richard Rodgers "No Strings," with Diahann Carroll
and Richard Kiley, choreoraphed by Joe Layton. The musical did not reach
the critical success they were expecting. This was the year of the British
import Beyond the Fringe with newcomers Dudley Moore, Peter Cook and
Jonathan Miller. Step On a Crack opened at the Royal Alexandra Theatre with
Donald Madden, Maggie McNamara, Gary Merrill and William Hickey. It was an
unforgettable night for me as out of the crowded foyer came Rita Hayworth,
and I got to hold the door for her, and she thanked me profusely, looking
like a frightened clostrophobic animal. It was not long after this that the
public learned of her Alzheimer's Disease, and this was the reason Maggie
McNamara replaced her as she could not remember her lines.
Toronto Workshop Productions were in full swing with Arthur Kopit's
Indians, as well as The Alchemist and Captain of Kopenick. Other events of
note were a production of Moby Dick directed by Douglas Campbell with a
great cast, Bruno Gerussi, Hugh Webster, Max Helpmann, Frances Hyland,
William Needles and Rod Steiger. The play went on to New York and died a
quick death. Another highlight of the year was the touring company, Polish
Mime. What an unbelievable surprise that was. This was one of the world's
most amazing troupes, a sort of forerunner of Cirque du Soleil. Over the
years I became a sort of Polish Mime groupie and saw them many times in
Europe as well as more times in Toronto.
We also got to see another pre-Broadway edition of New Faces of 1962 which
wasn't much and no stars were founded; Irma La Douce with Joseph Bova,
Taina Elg and Dennis Quilley; the great Tammy Grimes in her show-stopping
Unsinkable Molly Brown, with Harve Presnell; Do Re Mi with Nancy Walker and
Phil Silvers, and a great pre-Broadway production of Oliver from London,
with the spectacular sets by Sean Kenny, who was to become England's answer
to America's Oliver Smith. It starred Georgia Brown, Barry Humphries (Dame
Edna), David Jones and Maura K. Wedge.

OPERA - CANDIDE

A musical in two acts, book by Lillian Hellman, lyrics by Richard Wilbur,
John Latouche and Dorothy Parker with music by Leonard Bernstein. I have
seen this musical many times and each time I realize it is more than a
musical, it is an opera. When the New York City Opera Company presented
this acclaimed musical it was quickly elevated to that state. In its
initial New York presentation it only ran 73 performances, but later
productions ran much more, especially Harold Prince's wonderful 1974 revision.
The overture itself is becoming a classic, and the rest of the songs like
The Best of All Possible Worlds, Glitter and Be Gay, and Make Our Garden
Grow are growing quickly in themselves. More and more opera companies are
adding this to the repertoires.
