MEMORIES - My 50 Years of Theatregoing 1950-1999 - Part 1
Part One - My high school was close to the resort town of Jackson's Point
and along the lake was the summer stock theatre called "The Red Barn." In
high school, I had seen and been in many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, as
well as James M. Barrie's "Shall We Join the Ladies," but that was my
extent of theatre.
But in the summers I worked in Sutton for the Police Department and got to
hang out around the Red Barn Theatre, which had been in existence since
1948. Because of its proximity to Toronto they got to draw on a lot of
talent from Toronto theatres, and each summer they presented probably an
eight play season. With my bicycle the theatre was only about an hour from
my home. The first rehearsal I saw was Tennessee Williams' "Streetcar Named
Desire." That did it. From that point on I had to see every production that
they did and a lot of the time I convinced my mother to drive to the
theatre. Neither of my parents cared one way or another about theatre, but
they indulged me because of the seven mile distance to Sutton and another
two miles to the theatre. Other plays I got to see there included William
Inge's "Bus Stop." Is it any wonder why Tennessee Williams and William Inge
are still my favourite playwrights.
Other plays were The Bad Seed, The Tender Trap, Summer of the 17th Doll, My
Three Angels, Sabrina Fair, The Fifth Season, The Fourposter, To Dorothy a
Son, The Moon is Blue, where one got to hear the term "virgin" on stage for
the first time, this was truly an "adult" artform, Adding Machine, Blithe
Spirit, Harvey, Bell Book and Candle, The Vinegar Tree, Period of
Adjustment, Oh Men Oh Women, Springtime For Henry, Dreamgirl, The Seven
Year Itch, and Dial M For Murder.
By the time I got to see the film versions of these plays, they were old
hat, and in ninety percent of the cases, not nearly as good as the stage play.
The actors themselves were very competent people like Jean Roberts,
Marigold Charlesworth, June Lehmann, Tudi Wiggins, Paddy Croft, Alan Nunn,
Carroll Patricia Brown, Araby Lockhart, Aileen Taylor, Sylvia and Ben
Lennick and others who appeared at places like the Crest Theatre, and later
the Stratford Festival and the Shaw Festival.
In the late summer there was the Canadian National Exhibition and the
grandstand show which headlined people like Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, Ed
Sullivan, Danny Kaye and a great many talented Canadian performers. The
orchestra was conducted by Howard Cable and the dancers were under the
direction of Alan and Blanche Lund, and Midge Arthur's Canadettes.
And another highlight of my theatre experience. I would go to Toronto with
my dad, and while he did his business I went to the Casino Theatre, a
vaudeville house with featured stars like Johnnie Ray, Billy Daniels,
Frankie Laine, Sally Rand, Patti Page, Gene Nelson, or Rosemary Clooney.
These were three hour events, including a feature film, a vaudeville show
plus the featured act.
The last year of high school, our commercial teacher took us to Toronto for
a trip, and other than touring The Toronto Star, we spent the evening at
the Royal Alexandra Theatre. My first real legitimate theatre. The play was
"Tea and Sympathy," with Deborah Kerr and John Kerr. This was heaven on
earth. I was so impressed that my fate was sealed. I was in love with the
theatre, and remain so to this day.
My only other high school experience was a trip to the Statford Festival to
see Henry VIII, on its thrust stage, with glorious costumes.
When I finished school and heading for Teachers College in Toronto in 1956,
my life would do a complete change and I could almost live at the theatre.

COMPOSERS and LYRICISTS - GEORGE (1898-1937) AND IRA GERSHWIN(1896-1983)
One of the greatest of the Broadway composers, born in Brooklyn into a poor
immigrant family. A piano purchased for Ira was literally taken over by
George, who received full classical training. George's name became famous
after Al Jolson sang his "Swanee" on stage in 1919. This followed with
scores for La La Lucille, and George White's Scandals (1920-1924) which
included such songs as "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" and "Somebody
Loves Me." In 1924 he started working almost exclusively with brother Ira,
and their first hit show was "Lady Be Good (1924)," whose hits included
"Fascinating Rhythm." They followed with Tell Me More, Tip Toes (1925),
Song of the Flame, Oh Kay (1926) which had "Clap Your Hands, Do Do Do, and
Someone to Watch Over Me,"
Funny Face (1927) which had He Loves and She Loves, S'Wonderful and the
title song, Rosalie (1928) written with Sigmund Romberg, which featured
'How Long Has This Been Going On', Treasure Girl (1928) featuring I've Got
a Crush on You, Show Girl (1929) which had Liza, Strike Up the Band (1930),
Girl Crazy, the same year, which included Biding My Time, and But Not For
Me, as well as Embraceable You and I Got Rhythm, Of Thee I Sing (1931)
which was the first musical to win a Pulitzer Prize, and featured Love is
Sweeping the Country, Of Thee I Sing, Pardon My English (1933), and Let 'Em
Eat Cake the same year. In 1935 he wrote Porgy and Bess which received only
mixed reviews but as time goes on, it is probably his most important work,
and rather than a musical piece is becoming an opera classic. Dubose
Heyward helped Ira with the lyrics.
After George's death, Ira wrote Lady in the Dark (1941) with Kurt Weill
which had such hits as The Saga of Jenny, My Ship. His last two shows
failed at the box office, The Firebrand of Florence (1945) co-written with
Weill, and Park Avenue (1946) with Arthur Schwartz.

DIRECTORS - TYRONE GUTHRIE (1900-1971)
Distinguished English director who was long associated with the Old Vic in
London and his first American production was Call It A Day (1936), and
again in 1946 a revival of He Who Gets Slapped. After that he was back and
forth between London and New York, and directed such productions as The
Matchmaker (1955), Tamburlaine the Great (1956) (done for Stratford
Festival prior to New York), the brilliant, although not with the
theatregoers at the time, Candide (1956), The Makropoulos Secret (1957),
The Tenth Man (1959), Gideon (1961) and a revival of Dinner at Eight
(1966). He was largely responsible for the creation of the Stratford
Festival Theatre in Canada and the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis in 1963.
He also authored a number of books including Theatre Prospect (1932), A New
Theatre (1964) and In Various Directions (1965).

PLAYWRIGHTS - ARTHUR KOPIT (1937- )
New York playwright, his first plays being produced at Harvard, including
"Oh Dad Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad,"
which was presented at Harvard, and in London before reaching off-Broadway,
and later moved to Broadway. It was the cast that made it even greater, the
brilliant Barbara Harris and the illuminating Jo Van Fleet. As everyone has
one great play in them, this was Mr. Kopit's. His other plays never reached
the popularity of this. Indians reached Broadway (1969), Wings (1979). In
1982 he turned to musical theatre and wrote the book for "Nine," which was
popular. He also wrote The Day The Whores Came Out to Play Tennis.
