Dear RIF/T subscriber:
Along with this mail message, six files have been sent to you; they
compose the current 'body' issue of RIF/T and several associated files. If
you are unsure how to read the files, see "Receiving Files" below. The
following files have been sent files:
RIFT02.01
FRIE02.01
GUIT02.01
KELL02.01
WAHL02.01
REVI02.01
"Receiving Files" will detail how you may draw these files into your
system. Please note that not all systems will receive these files AS files.
In some cases, as noted below, it may be necessary to receive as e-mail
messages. If it is at all possible for you to receive them as files, we
urge you to do so as this preserves the integrity of the format.
Note: We urge readers to respond to RIF/T writings. RIF/T wishes to
explore the possibilities of the electronic medium and to further
collaborative activity self-conscious toward the writing process.
Please send your comments, responses, edited versions of RIF/T texts,
and RIF/T-derived writing to
[email protected].
We welcome you to RIF/T.

To receive RIF/T and Associated Files, follow the instructions that pertain
to the system that you are using. If you are unsure about which system you
are using, either contact your local system administrator or follow
instructions for "Other," below.
1. VAX
Even after a file has been sent to your address and arrived, VAX users must
"receive" the file before reading or downloading is possible. You must be
at the "$" system prompt, not your "MAIL>" prompt to receive files. (If you
are at your "MAIL>" press Control-Z or type "quit" to exit to your system
prompt.) From the "$" system prompt type:
receive <ret>
You will now see a list of files waiting to be received into your account.
To receive all these files, type:
receive *.* <ret>
This will draw all waiting files into your main directory (not your
mailbox). You may opt to receive only single files by substituting specific
file titles for the "*.*"
To read one after receiving, type:
type/page filename <ret>
2. IBM
IBM users must "receive" files before reading or downloading is possible.
From the "Ready" prompt type:
rdrlist <ret>
Once your reader list is displayed, press <F9> to receive each file. This
will draw all waiting files into your main directory (not your mailbox).
Press <F3> to exit your reader list. For a list of all files in your
directory, at the "Ready" prompt, type "filelist".
To read a file, position your cursor in the row of the file you wish to
read,then press <F11>.
3. UNIX
Due to technical incompatibilities, Unix users cannot receive RIF/T in file
format. You will receive only the RIF/T announcement; in order to receive
RIF/T and Associated Files, you need to request them as e-mail messages
from RIF/T's listserv. To do this, send an e-mail message to
[email protected], leaving the "To" and "Subject" lines of your
e-mail message blank. To receive RIF/T and Associated Files for this
current issue, type in the body of your e-mail message:
get RIFT02 01 e-poetry f=mail
get FRIE02 01 e-poetry f=mail
get GUIT02 01 e-poetry f=mail
get KELL02 01 e-poetry f=mail
get WAHL02 01 e-poetry f=mail
get REVI02 01 e-poetry f=mail
You may send some or all of these instructions in the body of a single
e-mail message to the listserv.
To faciliate getting *all* of the above files, a package has been
established. Instead of listing all the files, simply send the message:
get RIFT02 PACKAGE e-poetry F=MAIL
This will result in all of the files being sent, together with a packing
list. These files will be sent to you as e-mail messages, though there may
be a delay of minutes or many hours, depending on network traffic.
4. OTHER
If you access RIF/T via another system we recommend following the UNIX
instructions above. Feel free to write
[email protected]
for assistance.

chapbook length manuscripts which have not been previously published in
their entirety. Writing accepted by RIF/T may be subsequently published
in print form by the author without restrictions, as long as RIF/T
publication is cited. Please see RIF/T for precise terms of copyright.

< R I F / T A R C H I V E S >
For electronic journals in general, there are various means of accessing
journal issues. Usually, they can be accessed through the journal's
listserv and via gophers. At present, gopher access to RIF/T is available
at "etext.archive.umich.edu" Look for RIF/T under the "/zines" directory.
(There may be a slight delay between publication of an issue and its
archiving at this gopher archive. )
RIF/T via LISTSERV
RIF/T issues are available from RIF/T's E-POETRY listserv at the State
University of New York at Buffalo.
Issues of RIF/T and all associated files are archived under the e-poetry
list. To receive a list of files available from e-poetry, you must
retrieve an index for e-poetry. To do this, send an e-mail message to
[email protected], leaving the "Subject" line of your e-mail
message blank. In the body of your e-mail message, issue the following
one-line command.
index e-poetry
A current index to RIF/T will be sent to you (but not necessarily
immediately).
GETTING ARCHIVED FILES
GOPHER USERS: RIF/T is available by gophering to etext.archive.umich.edu
in the /zines directory.
FTP: RIF/T files can be retrieved by anonymous FTP from
ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu. Simply FTP to the above site and login "name:
anonymous" "password: youraddress." Search the /e-poetry directory.
GETTING FILES SENT DIRECT FROM LISTSERV
To retrieve a file, you must request it by its specific file name. To do
this, send an e-mail message to
[email protected], leaving the
"Subject" line of your e-mail message blank. In the body of your e-mail
message, issue a one-line command requesting the file.
get filename filetype e-poetry
For example, to obtain SCHU01.01, you would issue the command:
get schu01 01 e-poetry
You may also request a number of files at once by issuing separate "get"
commands for each files on separate lines of the e-mail message to the
listserve. To get all of the files associated with the first issue of
RIF/T you can issue one command for the "package":
get rift01 package e-poetry
Note: If you have difficulty receiving in file format, add the
specification "f=mail" to your listserv command:
get filename filetype e-poetry f=mail
This will retrieve the requested file as an e-mail message.
RECEIVING FILES
If you are on a VAX or IBM system and have requested archived files as
files, you will need to "receive" these files, ONCE THE RIF/T LISTSERV HAS
SENT THEM TO YOU. Instructions for receiving files follow. (If you are
not on a VAX or described in the preceeding paragraph.)
1. VAX
VAX users must "receive" files before reading or downloading is possible.
You must be at the "$" system prompt, not your "MAIL>" prompt to receive
files. (If you are at your "MAIL>" press Control-Z or type "quit" to exit
to your system prompt.) From the "$" system prompt type:
receive <ret>
You will now be able to receive files. If you wish to display a list of
files waiting to be received, type
dir <ret>
for a list of all files in your receive directory. To receive all these
files, type:
receive *.* <ret>
This will draw all waiting files into your main directory (not your
mailbox). You may opt to receive only single files by substituting specific
file titles for the "*.*"
To read one, type:
type/page filename <ret>
To read a file, position your cursor in the row of the file you wish to
read, then press <F11>.
