 <1>__ New Standards

Today, Mon  06-14-1993, I received the latest
standards from the QIC facilitators.  There have been some
major changes.  For one the QIC-380 standard has been shelved
for to new standards, QIC-500M and QIC-875M.  Secondly,
QIC-500M and QIC-875M represent two new sizes for QIC-40/80
compatibility. In addition, it seems that the QIC group wants
to make a transition of the QIC-40/80 to SCSI-2.  (Maybe this
means that we will get inexpensive (cheap) tape drives.)

To add to this the QIC group is now releasing more
information on the transition of it's standards.  Also I just
missed a board of directors meeting on June 8th.  The next
meeting is scheduled for Aug. 30 @ 9:00a.m..  Any persons
wanting to make  comments to the QIC committees or changes to
the QIC standard should prepare now.  I plan to go to the
meeting for 386BSD and other interested parties should contact
me or the QIC facilitator for details.

More information will follow on the QIC group itself
in future issues of QIC news. This will include a members list
and a associates list.  Also a condensed version of the
meeting in March, 1993 and June, 1993.

What follows are the major differences between the two
       new standards:

       QIC-500M
               Capacity                500 Megabytes
               Read Compatibility      QIC-40/80
               Intelligent Interface   Floppy (or IDE)
               Recording Format        MFM
               Tracks                  40

       QIC-875M
               Capacity                875 Megabytes
               Read Compatibility      QIC-40/80
               Intelligent Interface   QIC-121 (SCSI-2)
               Recording Format        RLL 1,7
               Tracks                  38
