                    Inspiration: Best Friends
                    -------------------------

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was
enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he
was dead. He remembered dying, and that his faithful dog had
been dead for many years. He wondered where the roadwas leading
them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one
side of the road. It looked like fine marble.  At the top of a
long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the
sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent
gate in the arch made from mother of pearl, and the street that
lead to the gate made from pure gold. He and the dog walked
toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to
one side.

When he was close enough, he called out,

"Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water? We have traveled
far," the man said.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water
brought right up."

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the
traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment, remembering all the years this dog
remained loyal to him and then turned back toward the road and
continued the way he had been going.

After another long walk he came to a plain dirt road which led
through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence.  As he approached the gate, he saw a man
inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader.
"Do you have any water? We have traveled far."

"Yes, sure, there's a pump over there." The man pointed to a
place that couldn't be seen from the outside gate.

"Come on in and help yourself."

"How about my friend here?", the traveler gestured to his dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump; he is welcome to share."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-
fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.  The traveler filled
the bowl and took a long drink himself, then gave some to the
dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man
who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's  confusing," the traveler said.
"The man down the road said that was heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates?
Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them you use your name like that?"

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'd leave
their best friends behind in exchange for material things."


               Inspiration: What Is A Friend?
               ------------------------------

A friend is someone who fills our lives with beauty, joy and
grace and makes the world we live in, a better, happier place.

A friend is someone to laugh with, over little personal things, a
friend is someone we're serious with, in facing whatever life
brings.

Friends gently teach you, how to give and how to care, and true
friends warmly reach out to you anytime, anywhere.

Among the great and glorious gift that we are blessed with, it is
the gift of understanding that we find in loving and true friends.

A friend is someone we turn to when our spirits need lift, a
friend is someone we treasure, for true friendship is a gift.

A friend is someone very dear, who shares your hopes and dreams,
who shows you that the grayest day is brighter than it seems.

Friends are for sharing, when life brings you gladness, for being
supportive, whenever there's sadness.

A friend is someone who believes in you when faith is running
low, and whose gentle words of wisdom help you choose which way
to go.

A friend is someone who comforts us when we feel blue, whose
special warmth and happy smile makes us feel that life's
worthwhile.

A true friend always thinks of you, when all the others are
thinking of themselves.

A friend is someone who knows your joy, your sorrows and tears.
Someone who cares and shares your world throughout the sad-sweet
years.

A friend is kind and thoughtful, whose company is pleasure,
someone who listens and understands, whose good advice is
treasure.

A friend is someone whose warmth and patience, never seems to
have an end,someone who has caring heart...that someone is a
friend.

A true friend hears the song in your heart and sings it to you
when your memory fails.

A true friend is someone who brings us laughter, even in our
tears, whose memories make us smile across the miles and though
the years.

Silence make the real conversations between friends, not the
saying but the never needing today is what counts.

A true friend is someone who walks into your world, when the rest
of the world walks out on you.

The friends who are really worth having are those who will listen
to your deepest hurts, and feel they are theirs too.

                     Humor: A Grave Mistake

As the elderly man lay dying in his bed, death's agony was
suddenly pushed aside as he smelled the aroma of his favorite
homemade chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs.

Gathering his remaining strength, he lifted himself from the
bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of
the bedroom, and with intense concentration, supported himself
down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands.  In
labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing wide-
eyed into the kitchen.  There, spread out upon newspapers on
the kitchen table were literally HUNDREDS of his favorite
chocolate chip cookies!  Was it heaven?  Or, was it one final
act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he
left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the
table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture, one hand on
the edge of the table.  The aged and withered hand quiveringly
made its way to a cookie near the edge of the table; feeling
the warm soft dough actually made the pain of his bones
subside for a moment.  His parched lips parted; the wondrous
taste of the cookie was already in his mouth; seemingly
bringing him back to life.  What, then, was this sudden
stinging that caused his hand to recoil?  He looked to see his
wife, still holding the spatula she had just used to smack his
hand.

"Stay out of those!" she said, "they're for the funeral."


               Romance: 1001 Ways To Be Romantic
               ---------------------------------

For a change, this issue, I thought I'd bring you a couple of
the '1001 Ways To Be Romantic'- from the wonderful book by
Gregory Godek.

                     Calorie Calculations
                     --------------------

Our Northern readers may be a little lighter as this issue goes
out. I've just been playing around with About.com's Calorie
Calculator, and it tells me that a 150-pond person shoveling
snow for 30 minutes uses up 200 calories!

This handy calculator asks you to choose an activity, a duration
and your weight. It then calculates your calories used. Here are
a few examples calculated for a 150-pound person performing the
activity for 30 minutes. A couple are serious, a couple less so!

Get into ICE HOCKEY     234 calories
Don't forget JOGGING    337 calories
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING    274 CALORIES
Do your IRONING          76 calories
WATCHING TV                      36 calories

I also note that KISSING uses up 36 calories. I think I need to
do some more research on that subject personally! Try the Calorie
Calculator for yourself, but remember, the results are only

      Glen's "Food Fit for the Fit" Recipe: Jamaican Beef
      ---------------------------------------------------
                        with Glen Esse

1 tablespoon OIL
500g. MINCED BEEF
1 ONION peeled and chopped
1 clove of GARLIC
1 425g. tin TOMATOES
1 425g. tin CORN KERNALS
1 teaspoon SUGAR
1 teaspoon CINNAMON
� teas. Ground CUMIN
� cup RAISINS
Chopped green ends of SPRING ONIONS

Heat oil in a 2 litre saucepan and stir fry until brown, the
BEEF, ONION and GARLIC.

Add the rest of the ingredients, cover and simmer for 25-30
minutes adding a little water if the mixture gets to thick.

Serve with RICE and GREEN VEGETABLES.

You can make this recipe quiet exotic by adding slices of
pineapple ( fresh or tinned ) that have been seared in a pan.
This gives the dish a real sweet and sour twist to it.

               Inspiration: Uncommon Courtesy

A funny story has it that a police officer was investigating an
accident. Referring to a woman lying unconscious in the street,
he asked, "Who was driving the car?"

"I was," a man replied.

"How did you happen to hit her?" the officer inquired.

"I didn't!" he said. "As I approached the intersection, I saw
that she was trying to cross the street. So I stopped for her
and she fainted."

I'm not saying that courtesy is rare, but in some cities it's
said that there are only two kinds of pedestrians: the quick and
the dead. Maybe it's that "common courtesy" is not as common as
it might be.

A wonderful story comes from 19th Century England. According to
the account, Queen Victoria was once at a diplomatic reception in
London. The guest of honor was an African chieftain. All went
well during the meal until, at the end, finger bowls were served.
The guest of honor had never seen a British finger bowl, and no
one had thought to brief him beforehand about its purpose. So he
took the bowl in his two hands, lifted it to his mouth, and drank
its contents down!

For an instant there was breathless silence among the British
privileged guests, and then they began to whisper to one another.
All that stopped, however, when Queen Victoria silently took her
finger bowl in her two hands, lifted it, and drank its contents!
A moment later 500 surprised British ladies and gentlemen
simultaneously drank the contents of their own fingerbowls.

It was the queen's uncommon courtesy guarded her guest from
certain embarrassment.

"Knowledge, ability, experience are of little avail in reaching
high success if courtesy be lacking," says George D. Powers.
"Courtesy is the one passport that will be accepted without
question in every land, in every office, in every home, in every
heart in the world. For nothing commends itself so well as
kindness; and courtesy is kindness."

Call it what you may, courtesy is the one passport you can't be
without if you intend to get where you want to go. Don't leave
home without it.

                 Inspiration: Never Give Up
                 --------------------------

For eight years the struggling young writer wrote incredible
numbers of short stories and articles for publication, and for
eight long years they were rejected. Fortunately, he didn't give
up, and for that he--and America--will always be grateful.

On one occasion... an editor wrote an encouraging note on a
rejection slip. It simply said, "Nice try." I think you'll agree
that most of us would not rate that little comment very high on
the encouragement list, but it literally brought tears to the
young writer's eyes. He was given new hope... he simply would not
give up.

Finally after many years of effort, he wrote what has deeply
affected the entire world and helped him to become one of the
most influential writers of the '70s. I'm speaking of Alex Haley
and his book ROOTS...

The message is clear: If you have a dream and really believe you
have some ability that can be expressed, pursue that dream. Don't
give up.

                      Humor: He's Perfect
                      -------------------

The preacher spent his whole sermon relating the evils of sin
and how all men are sinners with no exceptions.

At the end of the sermon he asked rhetorically, "Now does
anyone here think they are without sin?"

He had only to wait a few seconds before a man in one of
the back pews stood up. The pastor asked the man who had
the audacity to stand after such a fiery sermon, "Sir, do
you really think you are completely without sin?"

              Romance: Bring The Rain Forest Indoors

Ah! A tropical Rain Forest! With its beautiful flowers,
singing birds and splashing waterfall you have an instant
romantic adventure. No, I'm not about to tell you about a recent
trip to some exotic country. Here is how you can have a
enchanting rain forest in your own home.

It's so simple I am amazed I didn't think of it earlier. Fill
your bathroom with as many plants as you can (no cactus, please).
Bring in your music box and play your tape or CD of bird songs or
tropical music (even Caribbean music would create the right
atmosphere). With some duct tape and a dustpan  you can easily
transform your shower head into a waterfall (scrub the dustpan
first).

If you want to go all out, replace your regular light bulbs with
colored ones - blue and green would be a good choice to set the
mood. Bring in some candles with scents such as coconut,
pineapple and mango.

Now the next time your loved one needs a getaway but you don't
have the time or the money, take their stress away with a
tropical waterfall. It's a lot more creative than your average
bubble bath with candles around the tub. Not only will your
spouse thank you but your plants will enjoy the treatment as
well.

The garden-variety push-up is a fine exercise, one of the true
classics. But it builds just three muscles: chest, front
shoulders, and triceps. You can add back and midsection muscles
to the mix with this simple adjustment: Place one hand even with
your shoulders and the other one 6 inches forward, so it's in
line with your ear. Do three sets of 10 repetitions, alternating
your arm position after each five repetitions. Your back and
abdominal muscles have to work to keep your body stabilized as
you do this movement. The slower you go, the harder they'll have
to work.

          Exercise Program Reduces Falls In Elderly
          -----------------------------------------

Falls are the costliest type of injury among elderly people, and
the health care costs increase with frequency of falls and
severity of injuries.

An exercise programme delivered by a physiotherapist was
successful in reducing falls and moderate injuries in elderly
people.

A new study reported in the British medical Journal has shown
that an exercise program to prevent falls in elderly people
worked well when delivered by a district nurse from a home health
service in the suburbs of a large city. Falls were reduced 46%
compared with a control group who did not undertake the program.

   12 Keys To Super-Charging Your Metabolism For Weight Loss!
   ----------------------------------------------------------

You hear it all the time - "metabolism", but what is it? It's the
process of converting food to energy(movement and heat).
Metabolism happens in your muscles and organs and the result of
it is what we commonly refer to as "burning calories". Metabolism
is essentially the speed at which your body's motor is running.

"Basal metabolism" is the metabolic rate or caloric expenditure
needed to maintain basal body functionssuch as your heart beating,
breathing, muscle tone, etc. It's how fast your "motor" is
running when you're still in a reclined position or sleeping.
Basal metabolism accounts for about 75% of the calories you
expend on a daily basis!

The good news is that there are 12 ways you can "boost" your
metabolism! The more of these you're able to incorporate into
your life, the more you'll boost your metabolism. That means
you'll be expending ("burning") more calories 24 hours a day!

1.  Always eat breakfast! Skipping breakfast sends the message to
your body that you're starving because you haven't had food in
18+ hours. As a protective mechanism, your metabolism slows down.
Food, especially complex carbohydrates, fuels your metabolism.

2.  Eat earlier in the day! Research has demonstrated that you
can lose weight simply by eating a substantial breakfast and
lunch, and a light dinner. Dinner should be eaten as early as
possible, preferably at least four hours before bedtime.

3.  Never eat less than 1200 calories per day! Less than 1200 is
usually not enough to support your basal metabolism and thus will
slow your metabolism.

4.  Snack frequently! Complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables,
and grains) fuel your metabolism. Also, snacking prevents you
from becoming too hungry. The hungrier you are, the less control
you have over what and how much you eat.

5.  Eat more carbohydrates (food from plants), and less fat (food
from many animals and other food with added fat)! Carbohydrates
boost your metabolism and have fewer calories per weight than fat.

6.  Do some type of aerobic exercise (walking, jogging, swimming,
stationary cycling, aerobic dancing, etc.) on a daily basis
(preferably in the morning)! Forget this twice-a-week stuff. Our
bodies were designed to be active on a daily basis! When we are,
our metabolism soars!

7.   In addition to your regular aerobic exercise, take a brisk
10 to 15 minute walk at lunch or in the evening. This serves to
boost your metabolism even more!

8.   Tone your muscles with weight training three days per week.
Toned muscles send your metabolism through the roof. Do it!

9.   Look for situations to be active. Park as far from the store
as you can rather than looking for the closest parking spot. Use
the stairs rather than the elevator, a broom rather than a blower,
etc. Look for the "hard" way to do things!

10. Avoid alcohol! Alcohol depresses your metabolism and
stimulates your appetite.

11. Drink 60+ ounces of water a day. Your metabolism needs plenty
of water to function properly. Carry a bottle of water with you
and drink frequently throughout the day.

12. Avoid the"3 P's".....pills, powders, and potions! There are
NO quick fixes!

Get started today! You'll feel better and your metabolism will be
in "great shape"!

    Integrity In Business- The Secret To Increased Sales
    ----------------------------------------------------

Imagine David Letterman is on the streets of New York City with a
microphone in hand. He has one question to ask those who happen
to pass by, "Whatis the purpose of being in business?" "What do
you think the most common response will be? I would guess that
almost everyone, if not everyone, will answer that the purpose of
being in business is to make money.

I'm going to suggest a different way of looking at this question.
Imagine for a moment that the purpose of being in business was to
Grow People! What would be different? How about, everything would
be different and you would make more money as well!

I rented a movie the other day about industrial technology. I
loved these lines from that movies main character;

"Lately I've been reading about some of our great entrepreneurs,
Dupont, Rockefeller, Ford. Their ability to create great new
wealth depended on the fact that they worked out on the edge, the
leading edge, the frontier. It can be a scary place...but once
you've stepped out onto the edge, it's impossible to come back.

I welcome the challenges of the frontier. Institutions never
create anything, individuals do. We are the thinkers, the
planners, the visionaries, that will shape the future. It is our
destiny not only to change to make people community, but to
change the way people think."

It is my vision and quest to travel throughout the United States
and abroad and speak the code. If individuals and groups would live
their lives with integrity, the world would be a safer, more
vibrant, healthy, and fulfilling place.

I do understand that this is a new way of thinking. However, all
of the research that I have conducted points to similarities
between those companies that are considered to be visionary versus
those that are not. Companies such as Citicorp, Ford, Marriott,
Nordstrom, Wal-Mart, and Walt Disney all share a common code of
integrity. I will give you my interpretation of that shared code.

These visionary companies live a culture, a belief system, that
is shared by every level of the organization. One of these shared
beliefs is that the purpose of being in business is to grow
people. How do you grow people? You do this through coaching and
a principle based organization. The following are the guiding
principles that I believe are necessary for a company to be
living in integrity.

Three Core Principles:

   1) I do what I say I will do.

   2). I can't do it by myself. I am far better off as a part of a
       team than I can ever be by myself.

   3) Accountability-I am the source of all that I experience.

Core principle #1: I do what I say I will do.

This is a fundamental principle. If an individual does not hold
this as important, the entire system of core values fall apart. I
support this principle by blasting the following myth:

I am better off by committing high and falling short, then
committing lower and falling short.

Please understand that this is a myth, and is not true. One is
not better off by unrealistically committing to big audacious and
hairy goals. If an individual commits to an artificially high goal
then the moment they start to question their ability to reach that
goal, their motivation begins to dramatically decrease. The "pull"
of hope no longer is present.

Replace that myth with MLO's. Minimum level objectives. This
concept embraces the first principle of living with integrity, I
do what I said I would do. What is the minimum level you give
your word you will do and falling short does not exist.

I have been in the training and coaching business for over twenty
years. I can't tell you how many times I have heard an individual
say that they were committed to reach some goal and then not take
the intended actions. They all had viable reasons, stories,
priorities, unscheduled interruptions, and excuses. They all also
didn't do what they said they would do!

When you use MLO's, you call upon Newtons' third principle of
physics, "inertia".  "Any body in motion will remain in motion
unless acted on by an external force" With huge unrealistic
goals, the external force preventing the continuation of momentum
is fear. Once individuals see "evidence" that they can't do
something they immediately buy into that evidence as being true
and they live their lives in resignation. I've heard it said,
"its' the starting that stops most people."

If an individual had set a smaller, more realistic goal, then they
would still maintain hope, and the chance to be successful and
honor principle#1, I do what I said I would do. This goes against
accepted ways of beinsuch as, I should set big goals. I'm not
against setting stretch goals. I simply request that you also give
a bottom line that you give your word you will achieve no matter
what. Try it!

Core principle #2: I can't do it by myself. I am far better off as
a part of a team than I can ever be alone.

Elite performers will never argue with this. They know that they
must surround themselves with others. By doing so they create the
atmosphere where learning, discovery, clarity, and accountability
can occur.

Try this simple experiment. Take thirty seconds and write down as
many green vegetables as you can think of. Next, get a partner,
and together, come up with one list of green vegetables in thirty
seconds. In almost 100% of the cases, your list will be greater
with a partner than it was by yourself.

Core principle #3: Accountability-I am the source of all that I
experience.

The opposite of this principle is blaming. This principle is a
source of strength for people. It doesn't allow them to become a
victim. This principle embraces the concept that human beings are
very powerful at creating results in their own lives. These may
be dysfunctional results however! Someone who is thirty pounds
overweight has created a miracle of a result. How would they know
how to regulate their intake and expenditure to gain thirty
pounds. They are exactly where they are in their weight because
that is exactly what their point of view supports. We are very
powerful at manifesting our dominating thoughts.

Likewise, someone who has financial difficulties has exactly what
they should have given their current financial point of view. If
they want to have different results, it is not what is going on
around them, the environment, the marketplace, etc. The answer
lies in their own dysfunctional point of view. If they want to
change the results they are experiencing, they must first change
their point of view. After all, they are the source of all that
they experience.

How do you change your point of view? That is actually a simple
process. Decide first what you want. Next, what do you need to do
to have what you want. Then, what will you do over the next
seven days. This declaration needs to be very specific,
observable and measurable.

The process is not complete until you have a structure for
accountability in place. This must come from someone outside of
yourself. Another person is needed to hold you accountable and
to check back with you at the end of the week to see if you
actually did what you said you would do.

This is the elite performance system that I have traveled
throughout the United States and abroad teaching with tremendous
results for all of those individuals who were not satisfied with
who they were or what their accomplishments were in life. For
those who wanted to be more fulfilled in their health, business
and personal lives, this is the formula.

Try it on. Make a specific declaration to another person  and
then set out to execute for the next seven days. Design some type
of a reward or punishment with that person and watch how your
perception shifts. Now, because you have this dynamic of
accountability in your life, instead of just seeing how busy you
are and all of the reasons why you can't do what you said you
would do, you will see the opportunities to handle whatever comes
your way and still honor what you said you would do.

Put one week after another together like this and you will have
a miracle and magical year. Good luck!
