A story, which may be relegated to the files of "urban legends,"
tells about a Philadelphia legal firm that sent flowers to an
associate in Baltimore upon the opening of its new offices.
Through some mix-up, the ribbon which bedecked the floral piece
read, "Deepest Sympathy."
When the florist was duly informed of her mistake, she let out a
cry of alarm. "Good grief," she exclaimed, "then the flowers that
went to the funeral said, "Congratulations on Your New Location!"
It is difficult enough to offer comfort without mixing up the
sentiment! So difficult, in fact, that many people simply don't
know what to say to someone who has just unburdened grief or
emotional pain. Not unlike the new clergyman who, when a
distressed young woman confided that she was pregnant, blurted
out, "Are you sure it's yours?"
Too often, we want to help, but find that our attempts to offer
comfort, solace or hope fall short of the mark. But there is
something we can say that can be helpful.
One man, whose grandson died accidentally, found genuine comfort
when he shared his pain with friends shortly after the tragedy.
Of all the well-meaning words of support, two statements helped
to sustain and comfort him through the grief more than the
rest. They were: "Thank you for sharing your pain," and "I
grieve with you." After hearing those words, he no longer felt
alone in his suffering. He felt as if his friends embraced his
grief. He felt better.
We can't fix it. We shouldn't try to offer advice. And we may
never know how someone feels who is hurting in a way we have
never experienced. But we CAN give some comfort.
I think James Angell, former president of the University of
Michigan, got it right when he was asked the secret of his
success. "The secret of success?" he replied. "Grow antennae,
not horns."

Feature Article: The Top 10 Ways to Be Happy

How do you know if you are truly happy? What does it
mean? Happiness is a compound and complex emotion, but
its broad definition is what makes it accessible to
everyone. Check through this list and consider how
frequently you experience each of these sensations.
There is a positive correlation between that frequency
that you feel those things and your perception of how
'happy' you are. If you're not feeling so great,
choose one item at a time and put yourself in a
situation where you're bound to encounter it.
1. Relaxation
When you are truly relaxed, you are receptive and
calm. Disappointments and challenges are not a threat
to your peace. Relaxing can be as simple as three deep
breaths at your desk, or as deep as meditation or
yoga.
2. Achievement
To set your sights on a goal, persevere past
obstacles and setbacks, and finally see the goal to
fruition is a powerful act. Start with small, easily
attainable goals.
3. Health
Health of body, mind and spirit. When all systems
are running smoothly and in harmony, life looks pretty
darn good.
4. Fun
Doing things that make you laugh actually has a
chemical effect on your mood. Play with your kids or
pets, watch a funny movie or just go out and whoop it
up.
5. Expression
Learn how to get your point across--even if it
may never be heard by anyone else. Paint it, say it,
sing it, write it, lift it, twirl it, jump around
about it. Think your thoughts, feel your feelings, but
be free from them.
6. Wisdom
Educate yourself. Wisdom and knowledge are two
very different things, but you should collect as much
of both as you can. Spend time with wise and educated
people. Go places where you will learn things.
7. Exhilaration
There is an implication of a tiny bit of fear
with this word. Exhilaration comes with an extreme
experience, where a fear has been faced, conquered and
thoroughly enjoyed.
8. Inspiration
This may come from above, from within or from
another mortal like yourself. Be in awe of something
or someone. Know that there is always something bigger
than you out there and strive to be closer to it.
9. Energy
Do something with gusto and enthusiasm, even if
it's a little out of character. Vim and vigor are not
a couple of circus performers. It's hard to be down
with a spring in your step.
10. Fulfillment
What do you do that makes you feel whole? Do it
more often.

Humor: The BIG Mistake

I heard a funny story of an ancient monastery, charged with
copying old books and scrolls for the faith.
One day Father Florian, who headed the work of the scriptorium,
was asked by a new monk: "Does not the copying by hand of other
copies allow for chances of error? How do we know we are not
copying the mistakes of someone else? Are they ever checked
against the originals?"
"A very good point," Father Florian agreed. "I will take one of
the latest books down to the vault and compare it to the
original."
After a day had passed and the priest had not returned, the monks
began to worry. When they went to the vault, they found him
weeping over an ancient manuscript.
"What is the problem, Reverend Father?" asked one of the monks.
"A mistake," he sobbed. "The word was supposed to be
'CELEBRATE!'"

Romance: Label Your Love

Are you dating an oenophile? No, that's not some sort of
pervert. It is a lover of wine. The fermented grape
fanatics are fairly educated about wine and enjoy going to
wine tastings or vintners dinners.
Wine tastings and dinners can be an expensive but extremely
memorable date. However, I like to remind people that one
doesn't have to spend a lotof money to be romantic.
If you have access to a computer, you can create a very
special gift for the oenophile in your life. Buy a nice
bottle of wine and before you give it to your sweetheart,
design a personalized label that you can glue or tape over
the other label.
First, you will want to examine several other wine labels
and note some of the important information that is always
included, like the name of the winery, the type of grapes
used, etc. Almost any computer nowadays has a program that
can create a realistic looking wine label with relative
ease.
The label can be silly, clever, poetic, sultry or humorous.
Whether you surprise them with the bottle at a restaurant or
over a candlelight dinner at home, the reaction will be the
same - absolute joy.

For years, the herb yohimbe has been recognised for helping
increase libido. Now there is a strong suggestion that it
can also help reduce fat. Not just any fat, but fat
from the difficult areas- the waist, butt and legs. Why is
it that we can be fairly slim in our upper body, yet pile on
the pounds further south? Think of that stubborn lower
bodyfat - the obliques and spare tire for guys; the thighs
and hips for the girls! So, how does yohimde it work?
According to Tim Patterson, a bodybuilding expert, "The
answer lies in adrenoreceptors. Essentially, these
particular adrenoreceptors are the receptor sites on fat
cells that are responsible for fat storage." There are two
sorts of receptors- one in predominant in the upper body,
the other in the lower body. Patterson continues, "the
yohimbe effectively turns off the (lower body) receptors,
disabling them from storing fat."
Patterson's article contains plenty of information,
including suggested dosage, and cautions on usage and drug
interactions. But please keep in mind that the suggested
action of yohimbe is based more on experience and conjecture,

Large Servings Encourage Preschoolers' Overeating

A major public health concern is childhood obesity: In
America, one child in six is overweight. Many factors
contribute to childhood overeating, but a significant
determinant is that kids are simply served too much food,
says Prof. Barbara J. Rolls, Chair of Nutrition at the Penn
State College of Health and Human Development. Studying the
effect of portion size on food consumption of preschoolers,
Dr. Rolls and her team found that 3-year-olds offered extra-
large-sized servings of macaroni and cheese stopped eating
when they were sated, but 5-year-olds ate up.
"Young children naturally self-regulate their food
intake, but ... between ages 3 and 5, they learn to ignore
their internal hunger signals
and respond instead to other cues, including portion size,"
Rolls said. In other words, overeating is learned, and
learned at a very early age. For such children, "offering
large portions can promote overeating and produce
overweight."
Other studies have confirmed the correlation between
oversized portions and obesity in adults, but Rolls' is the
first with preschoolers. The paper, "Serving Portion Size
Influences 5-year-old but not 3-Year-old Children's Food
Intakes," appears in the February 2000 Journal of the
American Dietetic Association.

Glen's Food Fit for the Fit Recipe: Lite Fudge Brownies

--------------
1/2 cup Cocoa Powder
1 cup Self Raising Wholemeal Flour
Grated rind of one orange
1/2 cup Raw Sugar
2 Eggs
120g Tin of Heinz Baby Apple Sauce
1 teas Vanilla
1 Tabs Kahlua or Irish Cream Liqueur (optional)
2 Tabs Peanut Butter
1/2 cup Walnuts
3 Tabs Orange Juice
Combine 1st four dry ingredients.
Warm liqueur with peanut butter in microwave to combine.
Wisk in with all other wet ingredients.
Pour wet mix into dry and add walnuts.
Spread into 8" by 8" pan sprayed with canola cooking spray.
Bake at 175 degrees Celsius for 25 to 30 minutes.

Not ANOTHER Abdominal Exercise!

What is it with abs.? They seem to have been 'in fashion'
over the last few years, with a plethora of machines being
advertised on TV, and heaps of fitness magazines doing cover
stories.
A recent article gives us some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that the abdominal muscles perform an
important function in stabilising the torso, and in aiding
leglift. The bad news, according to the author, Nelson
Montana, is that most people hate doing abs. work, and that
"abdominal development is mainly determined by genetics and
is the least receptive to exercise".
Shunning all the artificial abs. aids, Montana provides a
new exercise which truly isolates the abdominal muscles,
complete with some excellent illustrations. According to
Montana, "after a couple of weeks, you may start seeing
definition in your abdominal region you never thought
