Hi Everyone,

The generous contribution of a small number of our readers to the
Life in Africa Foundation has received some publicity. You may
remember that one of the first 3 people to be helped by our
contribution, was Serumaga Stanley. Funds we donated have
guaranteed the loan that has made it possible for him to replace
a broken sewing machine that his footwear-manufacturing business
depends on. LiA's Monthly Feature is called In Stanley's Shoes,
and tells his story in detail. You can read the story, and the
acknowledgement "Stanley's loan was issued by Uganda Microfinance
Union against a guarantee provided by subscribers of
A Better Life: It's Your Future! Ezine.". Just go to this URL...
http://www.lifeinafrica.com/voices/feature/sept00.htm
To keep up-to-date with the progress of the loans we've made
possible, and new ones as they're made, you can look at..
http://lifeinafrica.com/report.htm , and select "A" for "A Better
Life:ItsYourFuture!"

And no, you're not to late to help. This is an ongoing project.
If you'd like to make a contribution directly to LiA via credit
card (minimum $10), check, or international bank transfer, you
can email Christina Jordan at   [email protected]  for
special ABLIYF instructions. Please copy the email to me, and let
me know if you would like to be publicly thanked for your kind
generosity. I'll be happy to publicise your link, if you wish.

I hope you all enjoy the Issue. I can now catch up on some
badly needed post-Olympics shuteye!

See you next time,

John

Only today does the fire burn brightly."
- Old Eskimo Proverb

                  Inspiration:  Risk
                  ------------------

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk
their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

But, risks must be taken, because
The greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, has nothing,
is nothing, does nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow,
but simply cannot grow, love... Live!
Chained by attitudes, we become slaves,
forfeit freedom.
Only the person who takes risks is Free.

              Inspiration: Where To Find Happiness
              ------------------------------------

An ancient parable tells that the Lord God, who created the
earth, did not want to give happiness to women and men directly,
but rather hide it from them so that they could search for it.
So the Lord called a council of the good spirits and asked where
happiness could be hidden.

One spirit suggested that the bottom of the sea would be a good
place as people would not be able to reach it. But Lord did not
think it a suitable place as they could dive down and find it.

Another suggested that it be hidden in the deepest mine. But
again the Lord said they would soon discover it.

Finally the idea came that it be  hidden in the depths of men's
and women's hearts, because they would look for happiness
everywhere except within themselves...

Have you been searching for peace and contentment? Happiness is,
after all, an inside job.

-- Steve Goodier, Publisher of Your Life Support System

                      Humor:  The End
                      ---------------

A woman goes into the local newspaper office to see that
the obituary for her recently deceased husband is written.
The obit editor informs her that the fee for the obituary
is 50 cents a word. She pauses, reflects and then says, "Well
then, let it read *Fred Brown died.*"

Amused at the woman's thrift, the editor tells her that there
is a 7 word minimum for all obituaries. Only a little flustered,
she thinks thing over and in a few seconds says, "In that case,
let it read, *Fred Brown died: 1983 Pick-up for sale.......*

             Romance: Creating A Romantic Calendar
             -------------------------------------
                       by Michael Webb

No matter how small or large of a city you live in, you are bound
to hear people with the same complaint: "there is nothing to do
here." When Athena and I moved from one of the largest cities in
the U.S. to Raleigh, North Carolina, you would expect us to say
the same thing. Hardly.

If one knows where to look and if you look often enough, there is
always something going on somewhere. When we moved here, Athena
and I began keeping a "cultural calendar" since we were not yet
familiar with all the festivals and events that were available.

When I read the Sunday paper and notice something interesting
coming up, I cut it out, and then put the details on our calendar.
We do the same thing with the weekly entertainment papers we read.
I asked to be put on the mailing list for the various museums and
concert promoters in the area and they each send me a yearly
calendar.

Often, some of the more interesting events can't afford a large
advertisement (or don't even need to advertise) so it is
important to take a look at the listings of upcoming events
printed in the local paper. By writing down these events there is
never an excuse of "there is nothing to do around here" and we
don't miss the shows we really want to see.

There is probably 10 times more events on our calendar than we
would ever have the time to do. Like a Boy Scout, a good romantic
is always prepared.

              Exercise Helps Reduce Depression
              --------------------------------

Researchers at Duke University in North Carolina, have found that
exercise seems to work as well as a popular prescription drug in
the treatment of clinical depression.

In a report published in the October issue of the journal
Psychosomatic Medicine, they tested and compared the effects of
exercise, taking Zoloft, or both, on the symptoms of patients
with major depressive disorder. The results were fascinating.
They found that the ability to reduce symptoms of all 3 methods
were about the SAME. Interestingly, it was found that exercise
seemed to do a better job of keeping symptoms from returning
after the depression lifted.

Of course, Zoloft (and the other prescription anti-depressants)
has numerous, well-documented side-effects. The side effects of
exercise are much more pleasant!

This research still needs more work. There are many qustions
still to be answered, such as "how does this work?".

I'd like to pose a question to our readers, and to anyone in
the medical fraternity who may be listening...

"If exercise can help reduce depression, isn't it possible
that LACK OF EXERCISE HELPS CAUSE DEPRESSION? "

There seems to be a strong corelation between the decline in
levels of exercise in the general population, and the increase
in levels of depression. For 5 million years we've evolved
eating (comparatively) good food, and getting exercise. The
further modern societies move away from that lifestyle, the
more health problems we seem to create. Interesting thought?

Team Sport Participation And Healthy Lifestyle
        ----------------------------------------------

A recent survey funded by the US Centers For Disease Control, has
found a link between participation by teenagers in team sports,
and a reduced likelihood of being involved in unhealthy
behaviours. These behaviours include using drugs, smoking,
having sex(?), carrying weapons and unhealthy eating habits.

What isn't clear, is whether it is a case of cause or effect.
Maybe the healthy activity leads people into healthy lifestyles.
Or maybe having a healthy attitude leads people into team sport,
AND into having healthy outcomes. I'd like to think that those
who play sport are more likely to respect their body, to have
more discipline, to understand goal setting, and to realise
that there's no such thing as instant success. The elite
athletes that I'm fortunate enough to work with tend to be
good all-round individuals, who know that success comes to those
who work hard, but intelligently. Self-destructive behaviour is
at a minimum in this group of high achievers.

AllAdvantage Choice: $300,000 Sweepstakes Pool Or A New 'ecount'
---------------------------------------------------------------

Participating in a program such as AllAdvantage makes a lot of
sense for many people. Just accept a small 'viewbar' on your
computer screen carrying some advertising, and you get paid for
using the Web. The cheques come in very handy, but they are a
nuisance to process. Now, AllAdvantage have come up with a much
better way. US members can now apply for an AllAdvantage
'ecount'- a Mastercard debit-type card. The AllAdvantage ecount
lets you receive your AllAdvantage payments automatically
online. It also sends and receives money via email and is good
for purchases anywhere MasterCard is accepted. What a great
idea- quicker, cheaper, more convenient. BTW, at the moment,
members can choose to receive the normal cash, or take part in
a huge Sweepstakes. The Prize Pool hit US$300,000 in late
September, so it's worth a shot! If you're a US member of
AllAdvantage already, check out the ecount card. If you're not
a member, maybe it's past time! You join for free, and start
earning cash or sweepstakes chances immediately. And don't
forget, you collect a percentage on the money earned by those
you introduce to AllAdvantage. It can be a handy little source
of income, and you can join NOW, at;
