2. Welcome from the Publisher
------------------------------------------------------------

I was caught a week ago in conversation by someone who just
wouldn't stop talking. As I listened, I remembered that old
definition of a bore- someone who won't be quiet when YOU
want to talk!

A few days later, another wonderful saying came to mind,-
"We were given two ears and one mouth, and we should use
them in that proportion"!

Today, looking through the quotes to put in this Issue, I
read these words from that great motivator, Frank Bettger.
"I no longer worry about being a brilliant conversationalist.
I simply try to be a good listener. I notice that people who
do that are usually welcome wherever they go."

Now I recall Ben Franklin's advice on the same subject, in
his inspirational autobiography.

The message is clear my friends! It's time for me to get off
this soapbox, and to warmly invite contributions! ;) LOL

Till next time, when I'll forget my own advice...

John

                    Humor: The Burglar
                    ------------------

A burglar broke into a house one night.  He shone his
flashlight around,  looking for valuables, and when he
picked up a CD player to place in his sack, a strange,
disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, "Jesus is
watching you."

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked the flashlight off
and froze.

When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head,
then clicked the light  back on and began searching for more
valuables. Just as he pulled the stereo out to disconnect
the wires, clear as a bell he heard, "Jesus is watching you."

Freaked out, he shone the flashlight around frantically,
looking for the source of the voice.

Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came
to rest on a parrot. "Did you say that?", he hissed at the
parrot.

"Yep", the parrot confessed,  then squawked, "I'm just
trying to warn you."

The burglar relaxed. "Warn me, huh? Who do you think you are
anyway?"

"Moses" the bird replied.

"Moses?" the burglar laughed. "What kind of stupid people
would name a bird Moses?"

The bird answered, "Probably the same kind of people that
would name a Rottweiler, Jesus."

             Inspiration: The Trouble Tree
             -----------------------------

You may know the story of the man who had a marvelous way of
keeping joy in his life. He was a carpenter. He followed the
same ritual every day when he came home from the job. He
stopped by a small tree in his front yard and placed his
hand on a couple of branches. Then, when he walked into his
home, it was as if a magical transformation had occurred.
All of a sudden, the stress was lifted from him. He became
energetic and joyful, able to fully interact with his
children and his wife.

He explained it this way: "That tree is my trouble tree.
When I come home I stop by the tree and, just like I leave
my tools in the truck, I hang my troubles up on that tree.
Anything that does not have to come in my house stays
outside. Anything which I do not have to deal with at home,
I leave on that tree. And then the next morning, I stop by
the tree and pick up the troubles I left there in the
evening.

Then he  adds, "It's a funny thing, though. Every morning I
always find fewer troubles hanging there than I remembered
the night before."

There is wisdom in knowing that some problems can wait
until tomorrow. And more wisdom in knowing what to hang on
the tree and what to bring in. Managing daily problems well
is vital to maintaining joy.

I wonder if the bluebird of happiness is nesting in his
trouble tree.

Study: Joint Pain and Glucosamine Sulfate
     -----------------------------------------

Every day, your joints endure an enormous amount of stress
from physical activity- walking, lifting, typing, running-
the list goes on and on. Many of us suffer pain from this
stress. Glucosamine, an aminosugar, is an important precursor
in the biosyntheseis of cartilage- an essential component
of our joints.

In a study released at a recent meeting of the American
College of Rheumatology , glucosamine sulfate "appears to
slow the progression of osteoarthritis."

Osteoarthritis, the world's most common form of arthritis,
is the deterioration of cartilage that cushions bones in the
joints. It affects 12 percent of the US population, sometimes
leading to total joint replacement surgery or disability.

A three year Belgian study released in Boston compared
disease symptoms and the average widths of joint space in
106 patients taking 1,500 milligrams a day of glucosamine
sulfate and 106 patients taking a placebo.

Researchers found that symptoms, including a narrowing of
the joint space width, worsened for patients taking the
placebo. Those taking the glucosamine compound experienced
no joint space width narrowing, while other symptoms showed
improvement, researchers found.

"For the first time, we have shown that a compound may be
able at least to slow down the progression of
osteoarthritis," said Dr. Jean-Yves Reginster of the
University of Liege in Belgium.

Previous studies have shown similar, or even better results.

(If you suffer from joint pain or osteoarthritis, and would
like to obtain a pharmaceutical-grade glucosamine sulfate
preparataion , please email me at [email protected]
The preparation also includes manganese and a high-grade
vitamin C to maximise results. -John)

Series: Towards a Slimmer You- Part 2  The Glycemic Index
---------------------------------------------------------
                   by John Payne

Understanding the Glycemic Index of foods, will be a major
step Towrds a Slimmer You!  For anyone who suffers from, or
is at risk of diabetes, the knowledge is vital.

So what is the Glycemic Index?  The GI ranks foods as to how
they affect our blood sugar levels.  When we eat food, it is
converted into blood sugar, to be transported around the
body.  Some foods convert slowly, some more quickly.

So what has this got to do with slimness?  Good question!
The answer is interesting.  When our blood sugar rises too
high, too quickly,  it is described as a 'spike' in our
blood sugar level.  When this happens, the high blood sugar
level produces an insulin reaction in the body.  It's the job
of the insulin to pack as much of the blood sugar into cells
for energy, as it can.  Anything left over, that won't 'fit'
into the normal cells, GETS STORED AS FAT.

This is very important, so let's say it again.  High blood
sugar levels can produce an insulin reaction, which causes
excess blood sugar to be deposited as fat.  It's obviously
a good idea, then, to look for foods that convert to blood
sugar more slowly, and so don't produce an insulin reaction.
That's where the Glycemic Index comes in.

In the Glycemic Index, foods are given a number that
represents how much your blood sugar level rises over the
two or three hours after you eat.  They are expressed as a
percentage against a reference food, usually white bread.
That is the measure we will use.

Let's list a few of the 'good guys' of the Index. Be ready
for some major supises!

Sponge cake                                     66   Good news!!
Soy milk                                        43
Soy Lin Bead                            43
Kelloggs All-Bran                               60
Milk chocolate, art. sweetened  34
Cherries                                        32
Fettucine                                       46
Peanuts                                 21
Fructose                                        32
Vitari                                  40

Now let's have a look at some 'bad guys' of the Index.

Waffles                                 109
Lucozade                                        136
Wheat bread, gluten free                129
Rice Bubbles                            128
Watermelon                                      103
Rices pasta, brown                      131
Pretzels                                        116
Maltodextrins                           150     Check your Equals!
Tofu frozen dessert, non-dairy  164

As you can see, you have a huge amount of control over the
effect the Index has on you. Choose peanuts instead of
pretzels at the party (21 vs. 116). Choose All-Bran instead
of Rice Bubbles for breakfast (60 vs. 128). Have a chocolate
milk, instead of mis-using a sports drink (34 vs. 136)

For a full listing of some 300 foods, I suggest you go to
http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

For an excellent book on the subject, look for 'The Glucose
Revolution: The Authoritative Guide to the Glycemic Index'.

I have just given you a very powerful tool to help you
control putting on weight.  Now I want to make sure you don't
mis-use the tool!

As I said in the introduction to this Series last week, there
are no simple answers.  All the information I give you should
be treated like pieces of a jigsaw.  I'm not trying to create
a fad diet here!  The Glycemic Index tells you an important
piece of information, but only part of the information you
need to eat well, and sensibly.  You still need to get all
vitamins and minerals you needd.  You still need to get the
proper balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.  You
still need to get sufficient fiber.  You can almost
certainly benefit from a high-quality nutritional supplement.
We'll explore these issues as we go through our Series.

Next Issue, we'll have a look at the Satiety Index.  The wha?
The Satiety Index measures how 'filling' foods are to us, and
is another handy tool for making informed choices about what
to put in our mouths!

                      Massage Study
                      -------------

I recently took part in a scientific study at The Australian
Institute of Sport. The object of the study is to quantify
the effect of massage on joint flexibility.

Subjects, including myself, were put on a machine that
measured how far our right ankle could flex, up and down. At
another time, we were given a long massage of the right calf
muscle area, and then put on the same machine, to measure
any change in flexibility.

The results will take some time to tabulate, and I will let
our readers know the outcome.

                     --------------

In her article "How To Sell Yourself: Let Me Count the Ways"
consultant Phyllis Sheerin Ross tells of the importance of
generating networks...no matter where you are:

"Tell everyone you meet about your small business. When you
first meet someone, in a formal or casual setting, be sure
to (in a low key-way), talk about your service or product.
Obviously, don't make it a monologue. Make it an exchange
of information. You never know who will provide a lead. I
got one of my best consulting engagements when my trainer
introduced me to a potential client at my gym. Practice
quid-pro-quo. In turn, I provided a business opportunity
for my trainer. He's a great guy, and it was my pleasure to
do so."
