1. Welcome from the Publisher
------------------------------------------------------------
Hello again!
I must apologise for being a couple of days late. I've been
interstate visiting a sick relative.
I've been asked by a number of subscribers to include more
information on nutrition. I think it's a good idea,
particularly the role nutrition plays in preventing,
reducing or even treating a wide range of health conditions.
This Issue we have a look at Osteoporosis. I'd welcome your
request for an article on a condition that affects someone
you care about. Just drop me a line, with your suggested
subject, at
[email protected]
Until next time.

Happiness
---------
by John Payne
Happiness is something we all seek, yet few of us find
-Some search for it an acquiring material possessions
-Some search for it in experiencing pleasant sensations
-Some search for it in seeking the approval of others
-Some search for it in the exercising of power
-Some search for it in the love of money
-Some search for it in the quest for success
Yes, Happiness is something we all seek, and yet for most
it is something that comes, then slips away, to be always
just out of reach. Why? Is life really unfair? Aren't we
meant to be happy? Are we being punished?
The interesting thing is that all these ways that people
search for happiness, and the questions they ask when they
don't find it, have one thing in common.
They are all OUTSIDE ourselves. Sadly, most people are
looking in the wrong places, and asking the wrong questions.
The truth is that Happiness is something that comes from
within us. Last night, trying to express my thoughts, I sat
and wrote these words...
Happiness
---------
We'll never find true Happiness,
In more and bigger Things,
In pleasures sought outside ourselves;
In money, cars or rings
For Happiness is a state of mind-
We can opt for happy years,
When we take control of our Attitude,
And the thoughts between our ears.
I know!, as a poet, I make a good athlete! But if my words
are inadequate to convey the meaning, it is no less
important. Read, savor and write down, these beautiful words
from Charles Spurgeon.
"It is not how much we have,
But how much we enjoy,
That makes happiness."
Enjoy!!

High Vitamin E Levels Can Prevent Age-related Decline In
--------------------------------------------------------
Brain Function
--------------
Older people with higher vitamin E levels are less likely to
experience the decline in intellectual function that occurs
with aging.
Austrian researchers assessed vitamin E levels and
intellectual function in almost 1800 adults aged from 50 to
75. They found that those with higher vitamin E levels were
less likely to have low scores on tests of intellectual
capacity. These tests are used to measure decline in
Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society 1998;46:1407-10
-reported in Vitamin Update
Vitamin E can be obtained in the diet from good sources such
as wholegrain cereals, eggs, leafy green vegetables, nuts,
seeds and wheatgerm. Where supplementation is indicated,
the natural form has been shown in scientific research, to
be up to twice as effective as the synthetic forms. When
buying vitamins and minerals, as in many areas of life, it
pays to buy quality. I used to have a sign over my office
door that summed it up thus; "Price is what you pay. Value
is what you get." If you would like some helpful advice on
good quality vitamins and minerals, drop me a line. See "To

On a trampoline,
A stationary bike

Osteoporosis- A Modern Epidemic
-------------------------------
by John Payne
About six months ago, one of my friends and business
associates rang me, and told me that his mother had been
diagnosed with osteoporosis. She was in her 70's, so it
wasn't surprising.
A week ago, another friend told me about her grandmother
falling down, shattering her hip, and subsequently being
diagnosed with osteoporosis. Again, the person was well
advanced in years, and suffered a problem we have almost
come to accept as normal.
What really got to me, was ANOTHER associate, this time a
male in his 40's, who was diagnosed with early osteoporosis.
I'll leave a more exhaustive examination of this subject
until we get the website up and running, but for now I'd
like to set out a few thoughts for you.
-Osteoporosis is not a disease you 'catch'. It one of a
large group of 'lifestyle' diseases that we have a large
amount of control over. We can prevent or delay its' onset.
We can reduce and reverse its' effects. It's up to us.
-The strength of a bone varies with the strain put on it.
That means that if you want to maximise your bone density,
exercise; preferably weight-bearing exercise.
-Vitamin D plays an important role in the regulation of the
use and absorbtion of calcium. Vitamin D is obtained from
dietary sources such as oily fish, liver, eggs and fortified
milk. It is also produced in the skin through sunlight.
Get some time in the sun! No, more is NOT better- don't fry!
-You need to get sufficient dietary intake of calcium. The
best sources are milk and green vegetables. Many people
need extra calcium, so supplements are appropriate. Make
sure that the supplement you choose includes magnesium-
ideally about 2 parts calcium to one part of magnesium.
-High salt intake has been strongly linked to a high rate of
calcium excretion. For this, and many other reasons, try
to reduce your salt intake.
-The bones act as a 'mineral bank', and when the blood Ph
level gets too acidic, the blood 'makes a withdrawal' of the
calcium in the bones to balance things up. A major culprit
in this process is the phoshoric acid in the cola drinks that
we scoff by the gallon. Goodness help the next generation.
The kids of today pouring down the "Real Thing" have a
reality check coming in the years ahead.
-One indicator of the likelihood of osteoporotic disease
in later life, is the bone density in the late teens,
especially in females. Eat right and exercise till the
early 20's, and the chance of suffering osteoporosis
later in life drops dramatically.
-treating osteporosis in women with estrogen, or
hormone repalacement therapy, may be far from the best
way to go. Unbalanced levels of estrogen have been
linked with increased incidence of breast cancer. It pays
to be cautious.
* Glen's "Food Fit for the Fit" Recipe *
----------------------------------------
with Glen Esse
JAMAICAN BEEF
-------------
1 tablespoon OIL
500g. MINCED BEEF
1 ONION peeled and chopped
1 clove of GARLIC
1 425g. tin TOMATOES
1 425g. tin CORN KERNALS
1 teaspoon SUGAR
1 teaspoon CINNAMON
 teas. Ground CUMIN
 cup RAISINS
Chopped green ends of SPRING ONIONS
Heat oil in a 2 litre saucepan and stir fry until brown, the
BEEF, ONION and GARLIC.
Add the rest of the ingredients, cover and simmer for 25-30
minutes adding a little water if the mixture gets to thick.
Serve with RICE and GREEN VEGETABLES.
You can make this recipe quiet exotic by adding slices of
pineapple ( fresh or tinned ) that have been seared in a pan.
This gives the dish a real sweet and sour twist to it.

Why Word-of-Mouth Works Wonders
-------------------------------
by Dr Michel Fortin Ph.D.
Viral marketing is the process of implementing means through
which the knowledge of your existence self-propagates. Like
a virus, your visibility spreads throughout a network of
people who refer you to each other. Unlike unsolicited ads
(such as "spam"), which stops once it reaches its destination
(and the reason spammers must keep spamming in order to
remain successful), viral marketing continues to spread
almost effortlessly since the people who refer you to others
know each other. In addition, those who get to know you or
know about you through third party referrals grant you a
higher level of confidence, credibility, and loyalty.
Word-of-mouth advertising is crucial in the offline world.
Online, referral or network marketing (as they are commonly
known) is vital. The key to marketing success in the offline
world is "location, location, location." The Internet is no
different. In other words, your marketing success depends
highly on the number of locations you appear -- places on
which your site, link, company, or product name exist. In
essence, it is to be in as many places as possible, talked
about by as many people as possible, and seen by as many
eyeballs as possible.
Remember an old dictum a mentor of mine once told me, which
is: "Implication is far more powerful than specification."
In other words, if you tell people you're the best, that
you're the leader in your field, or that your product is the
best solution to their needs, your self-serving promotional
bias makes it all suspect. Your statement is rarely
believable at face value. And if you do make such claims,
you will have your work cut out for you in order to prove
them.
However, if someone other than you says to another that you
are indeed the best or that you do have the solution to
their problems, how much more believable will that person's
statement be? The answer is definitely more. Accordingly,
referrals and networking systems are not only important
because they create an awareness of your business (or for
creating traffic in the online world), but also important to
the degree to which third party marketing indirectly
communicates greater credibility, superiority, and value of
the products or services you offer.
In his new book (which I highly recommend) "The 22 Immutable
Laws of Branding," Al Ries stresses the importance of
leadership and how that leadership is communicated. According
to Ries, people never buy the best -- they only think that
they do. They usually buy the leader (or what they perceive
as being the best). And that perception is often molded by
what they are told and by what others do, not by what is
fact or by what is being advertised.
Coke, for example, outsells Pepsi. But according to Ries,
taste tests reveal that Pepsi is the better tasting brand.
So, why does Coke still beat Pepsi in sales? It is not
because it is the leader in the marketplace or promoted
itself as such but because it is known as the leader.
Coke was the first cola "in the mind" of the marketplace and
thus the one most talked about, even to this day. When a
person is introduced to cola for the first time, he or she
is often told to try Coke. People in restaurants still refer
to the word "coke" as the generic name for colas, even when
only Pepsi is served. Why is that? While other colas are
bombarding them with marketing messages, people have heard
of Coke first and most likely from other people.
Consequently, if your business or web site is unique,
focuses on a niche, or is the first in some category, the
knowledge of your existence will spread almost naturally.
But creating systems and using specific tools that will
leverage the spreading of that message helps to multiply
your marketing punch exponentially. Such tools stimulate
word-of-mouth advertising, which is more effective than
general advertising. For along with communicating your
existence to the world, word-of-mouth advertising helps to
cast that aura of leadership and superiority.
Networking systems, for example, include strategic marketing
alliances, joint ventures, and affiliate programs. Online,
they are often called referral traffic generators. And
unlike the more traditional traffic generators such as
banners and search engines, these specific tools are much
more effective since they are used by third parties and not
by the original advertiser.
In fact, referral traffic generators are key ingredients of
online success. A great example is a referral service like
the one recently launched by my associates at "Internet
Marketing Challenge" (the publishers of the "Chronicles"
e-zine of which I am the editor). This service is based on
this viral marketing concept (please visit
http://SuccessDoctor.com/referral.htm).
Nevertheless, if you received a call, letter, or e-mail from
someone you know referring you to a particular company, how
much more credible will that referral be when compared to a
blatant advertisement coming from the company itself? You
got it! Much more.

Some Business Tips
------------------
Say Thanks with Chocolate Business Cards
----------------------------------------
It's always important to thank your clients in memorable ways.
Sending a "chocolate business card" is an unforgettable way
to show your appreciation. Contact a vendor near you that
specializes in the preparation of specialty chocolates. Ask
them to prepare "chocolate business cards" imprinted with
your logo and the message, ''Thanks for Your Business!''. If
you can't find such a vendor in your area, contact Jo Soard
of All-In-Chocolate Shoppe/Jo's Kandy Kitchen in Alexandria,
VA (800-4-CANDY-3). She can help you create specialty
chocolates in any shape, size and quantity. She also ships
to all locations in the continental U.S.
Happy Anniversary
-----------------
Take your top five clients to lunch on the anniversary dates
of your first day of doing business together. It's a great
way to say thanks...and to find out about new business that
you can work on together.
Thanks - A Lot!
---------------
When you make it a habit to write thank you notes to your
clients and colleagues, chances are they'll remember you the
next time they hear someone express a need for your type of
business. Why stop there? Write thank you notes to everyone
you GIVE business to - florist, doctor, hair dresser, auto
mechanic, etc. Thank them for a job well done and include
your business card with the note. Watch your referral
business grow.
After-the-Sale Thank You
------------------------
Write or e-mail your customers after every sale. Sold them a
product? Write about the ways they can best use and/or
maintain it. Sold them a service? State how you are going to
help them and list 10 ways they will benefit from your
business relationship.
"Thanks for the Recommendation" Program Where Everybody Wins
------------------------------------------------------------
Tim Sharpe of Absolute Graphics, an advertising specialty
company in Stafford, VA (540-659-0065) shows his
appreciation for referrals by rewarding gift certificates to
the individuals who send business his way. Once the new
business is booked and the invoice paid, Tim awards the
person who referred the business 5% of the net sale in gift
certificates from the Spiegel Catalog and other mail-order
firms. This is a great incentive, especially around the
holidays. Tim receives more business, and the folks who
successfully refer new clients to Tim can purchase holiday
gifts for friends and families.
An "Extra" Note
---------------
It's good business to send a thank-you note when someone
sends you a referral. Don't forget! Send another "thank-you"
to the person after the job comes through. Keep in touch.
The people who refer business to you will be interested in
how things are going
