FEEDBACK (Always welcome <g>!)
=============================================
Hey Melanie!
I got my sample issue of The Bookdragon Review yesterday-- great publication.
I used to be an avid reader (before having my first child and finding the
internet and... well, you know, being bombarded with life!)...
Anyway, all that is to say that I really LOVED your reviews! It was so sad to
read that Marion Zimmer Bradley died-- she was one of the first science
fiction/fantasy authors I started reading growing up...
I've already added a few books to my shopping cart and I was even able to tell
my hubby something that interested him (he's a big Piers Anthony/Xanth fan, so
he was happy to hear that a new novel had come out-- not so happy to hear it
was hardback though.)
Well-- just wanted to tell you what a fantastic job you are doing and I
will be
looking forward to the next issue!

EDITOR'S DESK: A Pokemon Addict Speaks
by Anonymous (no, it's not me!)
=============================================
Umm, hello, my name is <being withheld to protect the
identity of the informer> and I'm a Pokemon addict.
I'm not quite sure when it started, but it was
sometime when I was watching Batman Beyond on the WB.
I saw a commercial for the Pokemon cartoon. It was
instantly addictive, those colors, those lights. Then
I saw him.
Meowth.
A smart-talking, evil cat-creature. I became...obsessed.
I couldn't stop thinking about him. I'd watch the
cartoon hoping to catch a glimpse of him. I thought
I could control it. I was wrong. So very, very, wrong.
I found a Meowth beanie at a comic shop in Atlanta. I
couldn't show my friends my secret weakness, so I
brushed it off. But deep inside the craving grew. I
knew that as soon as I got back home I had to find
one. I searched bookstores, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target.
But no one had one. My obsession grew. I started
searching the internet for Pokemon-related products.
All they had were Pikachu and Charmander. Pikachu,
the irratating little rodent-creature, and Charmander,
whose pilot light goes out in the rain, neither of
whom are fit to tread the ground Meowth walks on. My
internet search proved fruitless. I sank into despair.
Until today.
Today (oh glorious today!) I found my Meowth. He was
waiting for me in the toy department at Wal-Mart.
When I reached the cash register the clerk laughed!
So deep was my shame that I lied and said it was
for my (non-existent) nephew. (The clerk will be the
first on my list....)
Now Meowth and I are a team. He and I will acheive
greatness. He was wasted on Team Rocket, those
incompetent fools couldn't find their noses in the
dark! Why, when Meowth and I launch our bid to take
over the world...!
Forgive me, I've said too much. I'll go sit down now.
Meowth wants to talk to me.

Pratchett, Terry. Carpe Jugulum.
Oct. 1999. 296p. HarperCollins, $24 ISBN 0061051586.
[Fantasy]
Beth Spires, MS, MT(ASCP), reviewer
Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld book is one of his
best. The story is set in the tiny kingdom of Lancre.
King Verence and Queen Magrat are celebrating the birth
of their daughter and have opened the kingdom to
out-of-country visitors as a gesture of good will.
Unfortunately, some of the guests are vampires. Vampires
who like garlic and are tolerant of the sun, who view holy
symbols as more of an annoyance than anything else and
whose family motto is: Carpe Jugulum, "Go for the throat."
The vampires have no intention of leaving after the naming
ceremony, or ever for that matter. It's up to Lancre's
resident witches -- Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and the
newest witch, Agnes Nitt -- to put things right.
Unfortunately, Granny Weatherwax has disappeared, and
without her special brand of "headology", the remaining
witches find themselves hard pressed to remove the
pesky vampires from the country. Along the way the
witches enlist the help of a nervous priest, a
phoenix, and a race of tiny pugilistic blue men, who
aid Lancre after a promise of Nanny Ogg's special
brew. Terry Pratchett seems to be getting better with each
book. Carpe Jugulum is consistently funny from
beginning to end.

Lowder, Maralee. A Witch's Tale. Oct. 1999. Hard Shell Word Factory.
ISBN 1-58200-141-3. Electronic format.
[Paranormal Intrigue]
Copyright 1999 Jennifer Dunne
A Witch's Tale is a paranormal intrigue, where a Satanist performs gruesome
(but not described) ritual murders to implicate a coven of Witches, whose
spells of protection are preventing him from dedicating a small town to
Satan. Mac McCormick is a reporter for the sleaziest of sleazy tabloids, who
invents stories more than he reports them. Cassie Adams is the daughter of
the accused murderer. When Cassie's gift tells her Mac is the one who can
uncover the truth, her love and trust redeem the hardened cynic. No longer
out to do anything it takes to get his story, now he will do anything to
solve the murders and help clear her mother's name.
Unusual in most books containing witchcraft, Ms. Lowder has given a fair and
unbiased portrayal to both the Wiccans and the traditional clergy. One of
the people who helps catch the real killer is in fact the Catholic priest.
Clearly, good is good, evil is evil, and it doesn't matter how it's labeled.
This was a fun and fast-paced read, with enough clues that the reader can
guess the murderer before the hero and heroine, allowing for a tense and
suspenseful ending.

"Dawnflight" by Kim Headlee [Historical Fiction]
Reviewed by Pamela Wilfinger (
[email protected])
Publisher: Sonnet Books
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 0-671-02041-2
Rating: * * 1/2 stars
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671020412/inscriptions
"Dawnflight" is a Braveheart-esque tale of Guinevere and Arthur, told from
Guin's point of view. This book uses the Camelot fable as a backdrop for a
modernized version of this legendary love story.
After her home falls into the hands of Arthur map Uther, Pendragon of
Brydein, Caledonian Chieftainess Gyanhumara nic Hymar is ordered by a
treaty to marry a Brytoni nobleman. She reluctantly agrees to marry the
enemy, in the form of Brytoni lord and soldier Urien map Dumarec. Trouble
ensues when Gyan meets the "future king," and they immediately fall in love.
Gyan is a strong-spirited woman, torn by the love of one man and the duties
of her title. Unlike the simpering women of dated romance novels, Gyan is
battle trained and bloodthirsty, and she is prepared to meet her future
head on. Her swordplay scenes make for some breathless reading. Urien is
detestable on sight and gets worse as the story progresses. This only makes
Arthur seem even more attractive.
The major downfall of this story is in its religious leanings. All of the
favorite Arthurian characters -- the Lady of the Lake, Merlin, Mordred --
have lost their true spirituality. Instead of being characters of prophecy
and magick, they are pathetically transformed into Christian molds. The
existence of the Grail is carelessly handled. Even the ultimate conversion
of Gyan is uncalled for and frustrating; it is truly her major weakness as
a character. She begins the book as an open-minded person, and ends it as a
sheep.
Still, fans of the Camelot story will be intrigued by this twisty tale of
love, betrayal and war. Though it's clear the author means to follow up
"Dawnflight" with several sequels, the ending is not unsatisfactory. In
fact, the love between Gyan and Arthur will leave you wanting to know what
happens next.

Foundation Retrospective [Science Fiction]
Charles D. Treadway, reviewer
When I was in high school I read a fascinating, sweeping future history
saga: Isaac Asimov's Foudation Trilogy. The Trilogy dealt with events on a
Galactic scale, and the life's work of one man who predicted the future and
planned to help the galaxy through the dark age and into a new period of
stability. This was the Grandaddy of all the future history epics to me.
It had all the elements: a galaxy-spanning empire, intrigue, mystery,
danger, and more. Yet I had always wondered about certain
aspects of Asimov's Empire. The lack of aliens troubled me. What role did
computers have? What exactly did the theory of psychohistory look like?
Was it a graphic representation? Or a series of equations? And what was
Hari Seldon like? What were his hopes and dreams?
When the good doctor released each sequel, and then his prequel to the
Foundation Trilogy, I eagerly read them. Imagine my surprise when his
robots were intertwined into this future history. Yet the other questions
remained. Finally, Janet Asimov and the Asimov estate proposed the writing
of further novels in the Foundation Universe. Three of the best writers of
hard science fiction were chosen to undertake this task, and in my humble
opinion, they have succeeded triumphantly.
Gregory Benford's Foundation's Fear starts the second trilogy. As the
novel opens, Hari is perfecting his theory of psychohistory and only wants
to persue an academic career, yet forces beyond his control and the last
powerful Emperor thrust him into the daunting task of First Minister, a
seemingly impossible job which involves governing the twenty-five million
worlds of the empire. In this novel, we get a hint of what happened to the
aliens in the galaxy and why so much of humanity's history is repressed.
Greg Bear's Foundation and Chaos finds a very old Hari about to go on
trial for his daring to predict the collapse of the empire. The Foundation
is preparing for their migration to Star's End and the start of their task
there. There is unrest among the masses on Trantor, and Lodivik Trema, a
humaniform robot which is the only survivor of an interstellar accident
is no longer constrained by the Three Laws of Robotics. Other Robots are
questioning
their missions also. In the metal corridors and streets of
Trantor, humans with awesome powers are being sought by rebel and
loyalist alike to join with robots in a common destiny or a
terrible destruction.
Lastly, and my favorite, in David Brin's Foundation's Triumph, an ancient
Hari imprisoned on Trantor is at peace. He knows the Second
Foundation is growing in secret on the plant Terminus in the hands of "the
fifty." He is content and prepared for death when he leans of a new
explanation for the "Chaos Planets" that have always been a threat to his
psychohistory theory. He escapes Trantor with a pirate, a bureaucrat, and
a stowaway to search for the last mystery. What he discovers is an
Empire-wide conspiracy, and a Daneel Olivaw who has a new master. The
absence of aliens in the galaxy is explained, and why the knowledge of the
human race has been supressed since before the start of the Empire. The
Second Foundation is also at risk from the powers of chaos that have
troubled Hari from the start of his career. Will their mentalic powers be
able to withstand the chaos forces?
In his afterward Brin hints that there is the possibility of another
novel with Hari Seldon. His story is not quite complete, and I for one, would
welcome a final story with the mathist Hari Seldon! In a final note,
each of these novels was written to be a stand alone work,
but I think that they are a much better read together!

Young Justice #15, monthly [Comic Book]
Peter David, writer; Todd Nauck, pencils
Melanie C. Duncan, reviewer
Since the first laugh-filled issue over a year ago,
Young Justice, the team title collecting the supercool
Superboy, the enigmatic Robin, the aptly named Impulse,
perky Wonder Girl, sharpshooting Arrowette, and Secret,
has not hesitated to go heavy on the comedy. Writer Peter
David has also never hesitated to tackle tough issues
from a teen (although superhero) viewpoint. Issue #15
focusses on Arrowette, the team member who is upbeat on
the surface with hidden depths. From those dark depths
surfaces a killer--maybe. When Arrowette reports for
school, she discovers a scene from a nightmare. Flashing
police lights, yellow crime tape, and a stunned student
body huddling out of the way while reporters crowd
around for the best story. In the midst of it all,
Arrowette sees the face of her beloved school counselor
disappear for the last time behind the cool black vinyl
of a zipped body bag. She overhears two policemen
discussing the callous brutality of the killers, and
she knows she can find them. But will she bring them to
justice--or will she exact her own?
If you've been searching for a way to discuss the
frightening changes taking place on school campuses with
your parents or your children, Young Justice #15 provides
an excellent starting point.

Yutaka Izubuchi. ANAM: Record of Lodoss War
Illustrations. Boxed. $125.
[Anime/Manga]
Melanie C. Duncan, reviewer
Record of Lodoss War, now on its second video series,
is a phenomenal hit in Japan and the U.S. with good
reason. This fantasy epic involves solid storytelling,
breathtaking graphics, and animation that puts
Saturday mornings to shame. With knights, magic users,
dark lords, elves, dwarves and a kingdom in peril,
ROLW appeals to anyone with an interest in fantasy or
the medieval era. The individual artwork collected for
ANAM is also visually stunning, but the daunting price
tag places it out of the range of all but the most
devoted collector. With Japanese/English translations
that are simplistic in the extreme, and in some cases,
make little sense in English, fans are better off waiting
for a paperback edition.

THE PRINCESS MONONOKE
A film review by Steve Rhodes
Copyright 1999 Steve Rhodes
RATING (0 TO ****): ****
THE PRINCESS MONONOKE, an absolutely breathtaking motion picture, could
as easily be shown in an art museum as a theater. With stunning images
like a Paul Gauguin painting and with a great mythic story of the type
that Richard Wagner would have loved to use for an opera, the movie
leaves you grasping without much luck for adequate words to describe it.
Although this has been a strong year for ground-breaking animation with
the release of THE IRON GIANT and TARZAN, nothing that has come before
it is in the same league as THE PRINCESS MONONOKE, an animated film,
written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Although teenagers and possibly
quite-mature preteens will enjoy it, the movie is aimed at adult
audiences. For the American version Miramax is releasing an extremely
well done dubbed version with an English script by Neil Gaiman and with
voices by named stars (Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver,
John Di Maggio, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Gillian Anderson,
among others).
One of only two films released in the Japanese market to ever make over
$150,000,000 (in a country with one tenth the number of screens as the
U.S.), THE PRINCESS MONONOKE beat out TITANIC for the all-time number
one spot in Japan.
The story, loosely based on Japanese folklore, features two valiant
youths, Prince Ashitaka (Crudup, last seen marvelously as Steve
Prefontaine in WITHOUT LIMITS) and Princess Mononoke (Danes), who fight
an epic battle for the forces of good. The complex but enthralling
story is well summarized in the press notes as being "a war between
encroaching civilization and the beast gods of the forest which
threatens to unbalance the forces of nature."
Generally, environmentalism, however laudable, makes for lifeless and
pedantic stories (the lame JETSONS: THE MOVIE being one example). Here,
however, the writer imbues the story with such vast portent that it
keeps you on the edge of your seat. The central characters are so
empathetically written and drawn that you find yourself caring about
them passionately.
In the opening sequence, a beast comes charging out of the forest. When
we first see it, it appears to be an almost formless mass of swirling,
flying maggots. A brave warrior, Prince Ashitaka, kills the beast,
which turns out to be a wild boar the size of a house. During the
battle, the boar bites the prince's arm, which means that he will soon
become a beast himself and die. (There is, of course, an "unless.")
As he journeys far from his home to discover the evil that infected the
boar, he meets Princess Mononoke, a wild girl who was raised by a
barn-sized wolf. When he first sees her, she has just sucked the blood
out of the wound of her injured wolf-mother. After spitting the blood
on the ground, the princess, with her face covered in blood, looks at
the prince with a haunting mixture of power and innocence.
Although they will ultimately band together, she is initially suspicious
and wary of the stranger in her midst. The troubled and nuanced
expressions on their faces throughout the story suggests part of their
pain and suffering as well as their dedication and courage.
Minnie Driver, playing against type, is the nefarious Lady Eboshi, in
some ways the leader of the forces of evil and in other ways a
benevolent protector of the downtrodden. The complicated tale suggests
two sides to most issues.
In a serious drama, Billy Bob Thornton, as a good-old-boy warrior named
Jigo, provides most of the humor with his deliciously cornball
aphorisms. ("When you're goin' to kill a god, let someone else do your
dirty work." and "Everybody wants everything. That's the way the world
is, but I might actually get it.")
The drawings literally burst with imagination. Among the best of these
is the luminescent figure known after dark as the Night Walker. During
the day he is transformed into a playful-looking little creature known
as the Forest Spirit, something like a cross between a deer and a gnome.
The mesmerizing film is such a moving and rewarding experience that you
should not be surprised if you break out into loud applause at the end.
Right after talking, the first cardinal sin during a closed press
screening, the second sin is applauding. Knowing full well that it was
a major faux pas, I couldn't help myself at ours. Applauding loudly, I,
at least, was able to restrain myself from shouting "Bravo!" as well. I
wanted to.
THE PRINCESS MONONOKE runs 2:14, but there's nothing I would cut. The
movie is rated PG-13 for images of violence and gore. It would be fine
for teenagers, but those 11 or 12 will need to be able to handle the
gore to be able to see it.

PLANET Krypton
The Borg
3:39
Score: 3 1/2
Leann Arndt, "Buzzy", reviewer
Okay, I wasn't quite sure what to make of The Borg.
Otherwise, I would've given it a higher score. This
is one major league scary track. That, I know for sure.
I still have chills. Well anyhow, PLANET Krypton is
major league talent. The skill here reminds me more
than a wee bit of something from any one of the Star
Trek big budget film soundtracks. Super good stuff.
Just odd and creepy.
I think that you should give The Borg your own earful
and decide for yourself. I know that if you've ever
watched an episode of any Star Trek series, heck and
wazoo, any SF series at all, you will be glad that you
gave it a shot. Buzzy says so. If I'm wrong, I'll have
to start ducking laser fire.

Q: Is the new Logston book set in her Shadow universe?
A: No. Exile by Anne Logston is set in the same universe as her earlier
novel, The Guardian's Key.
UPDATE
Q: When is Robert Jordan's next book in the "Wheel of Time" series
going to come out?
A: Book 8, The Path of Daggers is set for release in paperback on December
7, 1999.
CORRECTION
Q: You list Pegasus in Space as final in a trilogy. How does this tie in
with the Rowan books?
A: Pegasus in Space is the third book in the grouping To Ride Pegasus, not
Get Off the Unicorn as originally reported, and Pegasus in Flight. Short
stories which later appeared as part of the Rowan series first appeared in
Get Off the Unicorn which is why I mixed up the titles. My thanks (please
ignore the blush) to Petri Peltonen <

>From Kim Guilbeau, editor for the online supernatural horror magazine, The
Haunted,
http://www.angelfire.com/on2/haunted/index.html
"I wanted to let all of you know that I'm now accepting submissions for Issue
#2 December 1999 and Issue #3 January/February 2000. December will be a
themed holiday issue. All stories must have supernatural elements strewn
throughout and also must have a horror element. However, I do welcome
cross-genre work-- a little romance is fine as long as the supernatural
horror is the primary component." Visit the website for guidelines. [1]
