EDITOR'S DESK: A Death in the Family
    Melanie C. Duncan, Editor/Publisher

=============================================
My planned editorial has been postponed in lieu of sad news.
Marion Zimmer Bradley, author of The Mists of Avalon, the Darkover
universe novels, and editor of her self-titled fantasy magazine, died
Sept. 25 of complications following a massive heart attack on Sept. 21.
Her books struck a chord with readers from a variety of genres:
historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, paranormal fiction, and
on and on. Over the span of fifty years as a writer (she was 69 when
she journeyed on ahead of her fans), she was acquainted with, worked
with, influenced, encouraged or criticized a wide range of writers:
Diana L. Paxson, Mercedes Lackey and Elizabeth Waters are but a few.
Her Sword & Sorceress anthologies read like a who's who of
writers; if you made it into one of MZB's publications, you passed
some of the most stringent writing requirements in the science fiction
and fantasy fields. She didn't accept bullshit or trash, and she was
always the first to say so in the introductions to her books and in
her writer's guidelines. She also had the most famous set of initials
next to Donald A. Wollheim.
She still has one or two titles that will be published posthumously,
but we have lost a bright spirit in the fantasy world, and her family and
friends have lost so much more.
Go with love, MZB. Blessings on your journey.

Feehan, Christine. Dark Prince.
1999. 314p. Love Spell, $4.99 ISBN 0505523302.
[Paranormal Romance/Vampire]

Reviewed by Melanie C. Duncan

Mikhail Dubrinsky, one of the few members of the Carpathian race
left, is tired all the way to his soul. His people are extremely
long-lived, seemingly immortal to the few humans in the know, and
gifted with the ability to shapeshift and converse telepathically.
They pay for their gifts with a close bond to the earth, a close
bond that requires them to sleep in the earth for renewal and to
use blood as sustenance. As Mikhail ponders the looming futility
of finding  a mate to share his life with, American Raven Whitney
touches his thoughts with her own. Shocked out of his doldrums,
Mikhail tracks her to a local inn where he arranges to meet her.
Raven is recovering from using her telepathy to track serial killers,
but after meeting Mikhail, her talents are needed again as she and
the few remaining Carpathians become targets of a cult of "vampire
hunters." As she begins to learn exactly who and what Mikhail is,
she confronts her darkest fears and the myths of vampires to share
his life. Carpathian males who never find a mate grow increasingly
emotionless and eventually turn "vampire" in an attempt to enjoy
something, anything again. Feehan provides an intriguingly fresh
take in a market saturated with Bela Lugosi clones. A definite
keeper for fans of the paranormal and vampires in particular, and
peopled with enough intriguing men to fuel the imagination in
many more books to come.

Johansen, Iris. The Killing Game.
1999. 384p. Bantam, $23.95 ISBN 0553106244.
[Psychological Thriller]

Reviewed by Melanie C. Duncan

"According to the newspapers, she had everything. A good marriage, a
family, friends. Then one day she left home and never came back. No
warning. No reason. That's what's most frightening. A madman chooses
you at random and takes away everything. It's not fair."
--Eve Duncan, forensic sculptor

The second Eve Duncan book is just as chilling as The Face of
Deception
was. Eve reconstructs the faces of lost children from the bareness of their
skulls, always hoping one will be her daughter. At least she saw her
daughter's killer punishedor so she thought. Tough, sexy Joe Quinn finally
gets it together and goes after Eve on the remote island where she's been
staying with John Logan for the past year. The key to her return to the
States is the news he thinks her daughter's bones have been unearthed at
Talladega Falls in North Georgia. The bones were part of a mass burial site
revealed by a landslide. As Eve jumps back into her career, Joe hovers
protectively and a spunky foster child becomes the bait in a game with
"Dom," the real killer of Eve's daughter. With an extremely intelligent
serial killer taunting her at every turn, and with a rapidly increasing
body count, Eve is forced to re-evaluate the things, and people, most
important in her life. Johansen offers her trademark psychological thrills
with undercurrents of passion in a game that keeps all the players guessing
until the bitter end.

Kenson, Stephen. Crossroads [Shadowrun].
1999. 288p. Penguin, $5.99 ISBN 0451457404 .
[Fantasy]

Reviewed by Beth Spires, MS, MT(ASCP)

Shadowrun is an RPG, a role-playing game, set in an alternate Earth
where magic has come back into the world giving rise to metahumans such as
elves, dwarves, orcs and trolls. Mega-corporations vie for power alongside
traditional governments and wage private wars utilizing those who owe no
loyalty except to the almighty nuyuen. They are Shadowrunners and possess
many different skills.  There are shamans, who manipulate the primal forces
of nature;  street samurai, who have technologically enhanced their bodies
with cybernetic implants; mages, who cast a variety of spells; and deckers,
who interface directly into their computers and work in a virtual world
known as "the Matrix".
Crossroads is the story of a mage, Talon.  Talon finds himself
returning to Boston after a ten year absence when a woman arrives at his
apartment looking for associates of Jason Vale, Talon's former mentor.
Talon had left Boston after getting revenge on those responsible for
Jason's death.  But in his quest for revenge, Talon unleashed a spirit,
which feeds on his anger and hatred, and has grown powerful waiting to
be reunited with its creator.  But there are those who would leash the
spirit for their own uses, so Talon has to dodge mega-corporations and
yakuza in his quest to destroy the spirit.
Crossroads is a good stand-alone novel in the Shadowrun series.  While
the book refers to events that have taken place in previous novels, it is
not necessary to have read those to follow the story. Kenson previously
authored game books for the Shadowrun RPG. The book moves along briskly and
as it is told from first person perspective, keeps the reader guessing
along with Talon.

Roberson, Jennifer. Lady of Sherwood.
Nov. 1999. 384p. Kensington, $24 ISBN 1575664755.
[Historical Fiction]

Reviewed for Booklist by Melanie C. Duncan
(Since Booklist will be printing the "official" review I wrote, I can't
duplicate it here, but I can give you a brief rundown.)

Five years have passed since the events in Lady of the Forest.
Robin and Marian live quietly in her manor, with Will Scathlocke, Little
John, Much and Friar Tuck. Pardoned by King Richard, they have avoided
the Sheriff of Nottingham as much as possible, but the King is dying in
France. Dying, ironically, as a common thief after attempting to take a
castle for a nonexistent treasure. Long live King John. Once again Robin
and his men take to Sherwood Forest to avoid the Sheriff's long-awaited
vengeance. While Lady of Sherwood stands well enough alone, it is best
savored as the sequel it is meant to be. Roberson draws you in, and before
you know it, midnight is long gone, the last page turns, and you still want
more Robin, more Marian, more Roberson.

The 13th Warrior, starring Antonio Banderas, directed by John McTiernan.

Reviewed by Melanie C. Duncan

The 13th Warrior, based on Michael Crichton's book Eaters of the Dead,
which is based on the Old English poem "Beowulf," is a great way to forget
the real world for a couple of hours. Banderas, more often accused of being
eye candy than an outstanding actor, is credible as an Islamic emissary
sent to the frozen North because of an indiscretion with another man's
wife. Bewildered by the giant North men he encounters, nonetheless he joins
them on a quest to rid Hrothgar's hall of the monsters attacking
relentlessly. Beowulf (pronounced "bull-vai") proves there's a brain hidden
underneath all that blonde hair. Banderas (I'm not even attempting to spell
his character's name <g>) is forced to confront his inner fears of the
unknown and failure. While I've heard through the Net that historical
re-enactors have problems with the costumes and weapons, the rest of us can
watch in blissful ignorance and wonder right along with Banderas exactly
what is he facing? While my brother-in-law claims there are too many
close-ups of Banderas for it to be a guy movie, my sister and I had no
objections.

The Blair Witch Project, out on video Oct. 22

Reviewed by Beth Spires, MS, MT(ASCP)

One of the hottest movies to have been released this summer comes to
home video in October, just in time for Halloween.  While some would argue
that this is a ground-breaking movie of terror and suspense, I would have
to firmly disagree.  The first-person, jerky motion of the camera made me
motion sick, however that could have been forgiven if the movie was even
the least bit suspenseful or scary.  I cared nothing for the main
characters and by the time the movie was over, I was hoping SOMETHING would
happen to them just relieve the boredom.  They never really even explained
what the Blair Witch was. For those of you with children who want to see the
movie, my advice is to preview it first.  There is very strong language in
the movie and the f-word is used frequently, as everything from an
adjective, to a noun, to a verb. My advice, if you want to rent a
suspenseful movie for Halloween: Rent the original Psycho, or any movie by
Hitchcock.  If you want a scary movie, rent Halloween I or The Exorcist.
The reaction of one movie-goer to Blair Witch pretty much sums it up.
"Well, was that it?"

    Q & A

=============================================
Q: Are all of Terry Pratchett's books "Discworld" novels?
A: No. Just his most recent ones. He's also written Good Omens with Neil
Gaiman, Truckers, Diggers, Wings, The Carpet People, The Dark Side of the
Sun, Johnny & the Dead, and Johnny & the Bomb which aren't set on Discworld.

Q: When is Robert Jordan's next book in the "Wheel of Time" series
going to come out?
A: No time soon. I'm keeping check, and Jordan has said there will be 10-12
books.

Q: Is the new Logston book set in her Shadow universe?
A: No. Exile by Anne Logston is set in the same universe as her earlier
novel, The Guardian's Key.

Q: Do you assign the category labels or are they straight from the publisher?
A: I'm assigning category labels based upon what I learn from the
publishers and from my years of experience as a librarian.

Q: You list Pegasus in Space as final in a trilogy. How does this tie in
with the Rowan books?
A: Pegasus in Space is the third book in the grouping Get Off the Unicorn
and Pegasus in Flight. It will be a bridge of sorts to the Rowan series,
according to Ms. McCaffrey (as spoken to at DragonCon July 3, 1999 in
Atlanta, GA).

Q: Is the new Robert Parker book a Spenser book?
A: No. Family Honor is the first book in a new series starring Boston
private investigator Sunny Randall which reviewers are already calling the
series with the female Spenser. Parker supposedly wrote it with actress and
friend, Helen Hunt, in mind.

which we cut every weekend, more accurately reflects what goes on in our
stores. Any retailer wants to sell more of what they're selling." The Times

Newly discovered short stories by Raymond Carver will soon be published. Over

writings of Ray's to offer of this nature. It's been lovely to have his
stories in the house again, of course. A great excitement and a pleasure."
Gallagher found the stories in March, but held on to them until she could
find an editor she trusted to work with the pieces.

Pamela Wilfinger ([email protected]) is looking for vampire-related quotes
for her latest novel. She hopes to use the most fitting ones as openers to
each chapter of the book, and is particularly interested in quotes that
capture the "essence" of vampirism, the night, soulmates and fallen angels.
All quotes must be attributed to someone with a first and last name. Please
include your name as well, since she would like to thank everyone in the
acknowledgments page.
