The World is a service provider for Internet services. Among the
myriad of available services are electronic mail, USENET, file
software archives, telnet, ftp, IRC, library catalogs, and much more.
As the first provider of public access Internet services, World is
committed to providing cost effective, reliable network services for
dialup customers of the Internet community.
RESOURCES
The World is a large, multi-processor Solbourne SPARC server with over
8GB of disk storage. The Internet connections for World are multiple
high speed (T1, 1.544Mbps) links via Alternet's commercial network.
Our 50+ dialup lines support modems with v.32bis, v.32, v.42bis, MNP5
communications. Modem settings are 8 bit, no parity, and 1 stop bit.
Vt100 terminal emulation is recommended for optimal communications.
RATES
The World offers two billing rates which are the same 24 hours per day
at all connection speeds. The Basic Rate plan is a $5 monthly account
fee plus a $2 per hour usage fee. Basic Rate accounts include a .5MB
disk quota. The 20/20 Plan is a bulk usage rate where $20 paid in
advance buys 20 hours of online time during a one month period. This
includes the monthly account fee and offers an increased disk quota of
2MB. 20/20 Plan accounts used for more than 20 hours during one month
are billed at an hourly rate of $1 per hour for the overage.
The World offers payment options via MasterCard or Visa, postal
invoice, or email invoice. Unfortunately, we cannot accept postal or
email billing requests from outside the United States. Additional
discounts are available for members of the Boston Computer Society and
for corporate customers. Send email to "
[email protected]" for
details.

COST EFFECTIVE LONG DISTANCE ACCESS
At the present time, Boston is the only place where direct dial World
modems exist. For access from the greater-Boston area, call
1-800-555-5000 for New England Telephone rates. For flat monthly
fees, various non-measured services are offered. For outside
Massachusetts, first check your long distance service provider. Many
companies offer affordable rates for direct dial service particularly
to the same number or area code. MCI is providing additional discounts
for World customers who list us on their Friends and Family Plan.
Lower cost local dial modems throughout the USA are available with
Compuserve's Packet Network (an additional $5.60/hr added to your
