International Political Prisoners Unite To Save Mumia Abu-Jamal
Art And Writings Against The Death Penalty

International Political Prisoners Unite to Save Mumia Abu-
Jamal is a unique Travelling Exhibition of Visual and Written
Art. This innovative project was initiated by political prisoners
here in the U.S. as a prisoner-to-prisoner solidarity effort to
help save the life of controversial African-American journalist
Mumia Abu-Jamal, currently on death row in Pennsylvania. It comes
at a time in this country where the proliferation of the death
penalty is ever present and at a time where this project and all
efforts to save Mumia are of the utmost importance.
Over 100 political prisoners from the United States,
Germany, France, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, and Peru have signed
the call and contributed a broad variety of art work that
includes poetry and prose, paintings, drawings, quilts, hand-
painted silk scarves, knit work, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture and
photographs.
Ongoing throughout 1995, Political Prisoners Unite unveiled
the art exhibition on December 10, 1994 at the Art Gallery at the
Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building in New York City. This
kick-off event included not only the display of prisoner art but
performances of prisoner authored poetry. An evening event is
being planned for June 17, 1995 to be held at the Brecht Forum,
122 W. 27th Street, NYC. This event will be the centerpoint for
this ongoing project.
Both before and after the June 17th event, the project will
travel to many cities and states, including Jersey City and
Newark, New Jersey; New Haven, Connecticut, Brooklyn and the
Bronx, New York; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Toronto, Canada;
Milwaukee, and Madison, Wisconsin; Atlanta, Georgia; Alabama;
California and then possibly on to Germany, Denmark, England and
France.

Bring Political Prisoners Unite To Your Area

Many have expressed interest in bringing some aspect of this
project to their area. There are two different ways to bring this
event to you: 1) 35 piece body of prisoner art work. Due to the
work involved in transporting and hanging the art work, there
needs to be at least a 2-3 week time frame for the art to be on
display. The space can be a gallery, community center, church,
etc., that is capable of insuring the safety of the art work for
such a time period; 2) A single event: Many want to bring the
project to them but cannot commit to a time period of 2-3 weeks.
We have compiled a smaller version of the show, approximately
10-15 pieces of art work, packets of poetry and a speakers bureau
to facilitate a single day/evening program.

Components of the project include:

1. A 35 piece body of prisoner artwork that includes paintings,
drawings, prints, sculpture, quilts, fabric paintings,
photographs, collages and jewelry and a smaller 10-15 piece body
of artwork.
2. Prisoner authored poetry, prose, essays and plays to be
performed at openings, single events.
3. Audio and visual tapes of Mumia and political prisoners.
4. Prisoner and outside arts and crafts, cards, books etc.
5. Speakers available on Mumia, Political prisoners and the death
penalty.

Because of the nature of this project, it is a necessity
that those interested in hosting the art and or event in their
area will need to commit to covering any cost which will be
incurred in the traveling/transportation, displaying and carrying
out of any event. We will work with people to help make every
event possible as well as supply each area with information on
Mumia, the project and political prisoners.
Through this creative initiative, we here beyond the prison
bars have been given a unique opportunity to travel along the
same path with these women and men in prison. By asking us to
become their voices and bodies beyond the walls we forge a bond
between inside and out so that together we can help to save the
life of Mumia Abu Jamal, work to change the pro-death penalty
tide in this country, and the eventual release all political
prisoners here in the U.S. and abroad.
