Small Computer ComDanv Enhances filePro Plus
DBMS/Applications Development Environment
UNIFORUM, Washington, D.C.; Jan. 23 -- The Small Computer Company,
Inc., has added a significant enhancement to Version 4.0 of itsfilePro
Plus database management system. filePro Plus 4.0, which has been in
running in beta sites since December and will be commercially
available on Feb. 15, now incorporates a "transaction handling"
capability through its browse pop-up window feature. The transaction
handling feature enablesfilePro, one of the leading UNIX/XENIX
software products, to provide developers with a more flexible and
powerful way to develop point-of-sale, order ent, y and other
transaction oriented applications.
"This new and powerful capability, combined with other major
enhancements that we announced three months ago, firrnly
positionsfilePro into the top class of Data Base Management Systems
and Applications Development Environments. It further positionsfilePro
as the UNIX software of choice for departmental and small- to
medium-sized companies," stated Marc Koppelman, vice- president of
sales and marketing for The Small Computer Company, Inc.
One of the enhancements that was recently made tofilePro is a powerful
feature called FUZZY Search. This feature gives users the ability to
search for data without the preciseness required by other search
methods. It is not phonetic, but a unique patented algorithm licensed
from Proximity Technologies.
For example, if a user is searching for the name, properly spelled,
HUANG, they would likely type in the letters W-A-N-G. FUZZY Search
will find the name under the correct spelling, H-U-A-N-G, along with
other names in the proximity, such as WONG. FUZZY Search is useful for
any type of business, institution or government agency.
The Small Computer Company is the first 4GL vendor to incorporate this
technique into a commercially-available product across multiple
operating systems.
"filePro is firmly entrenched as one of the leading DBMS's and
Applications Development Environments in UNIX/XENIX. The Small
Computer Company's next goal is greater penetration of the DOS-OS/2
market, and the company plans to make major announcements in the
coming months which will lead to substantial gains for filePro in the
single-user market," added Koppelman.
filePro Plus runs in DOS, OS/2, VMS, LANs, and many different flavors
of UNIX, including XENIX, AIX, ULTRIX and SUN OS. The key function of
the product is its portability -- an application developed on one
platform can be easily ported to any operating system filePro Plus
runs on.
filePro Plus 4.0 is priced from $990 to $40,000, depending on the
operating system and computer platform used. Upgrades will be
available to users at the same time that it is released into the
distribution channels.
