MENTOR GRAPHICS TO DELIVER EDA PRODUCTS ON SUN WORKSTATIONS

   MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- January 11, 1990 -- Sun
Microsystems announced today that Mentor Graphics, the leading market
supplier of electronic design automation (EDA) systems, has signed a
letter of intent to make its products available on Sun's
SPARC(TM)-based workstations. This announcement was made in
conjunction with Mentor's agreement to acquire Silicon Compiler
Systems Corp., an IC design vendor whose products are sold on the Sun
platform.

"Sun has built a large market in the EDA segment due to ow
relationships with all the key vendors -- except Mentor. This
agreement with Mentor finalizes our position as the leading
workstation vendor in the EDA market," said Scott McNealy, Sun's chief
executive officer. "The Sun platform appeals to Mentor and the other
EDA vendors particularly because of SPARC, UNIX(R), and OPEN LOOK(TM).
Software vendors and customers alike have endorsed SPARC systems as
the hardware plafform of choice for EDA applications. We are delighted
at this endorsement by Mentor."

Before the Mentor/Sun agreement, Mentor supported a single hardware
platform.  Thomas Bruggere, CEO and chairman of Mentor Graphics, said,
"We look forward to serving the market in the 1990s as an open,
multi-vendor company. Our customers now have the ability to take
advantage of Mentor's and SCS's combined technologies on the
industry's leading platforms."

The EDA market is one of Sun's largest revenue-producing market
segments, with 19 percent of fiscal '89 hardware shipments supporting
EDA applications. Sun has sold into the EDA market for five years.
Mentor Graphics/SCS' IC design products are immediately available on
Sun workstations. Additional Mentor Graphics products will be ported
to Sun throughout 1990 and will be available by year end.  Sun
Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a
leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing
systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX
operating system and productivity software.
