INGRES SHOWS FIRST RELATIONAL DATABASE SYSTEM TO RUN ON
NEW IBM RISC SYSTEM/6000
Only Product Family Providing Transparent
Data Access from IBM's AIX to SAA Platforms
ALAMEDA, Calif., February 15, 1990 -- Ingres Corporation (NASD: RELY)
today demonstrated the first relational database management system (RDBMS)
runningon IBM's new RISC System/6000TM.
Ingres, a worldwide leader in quality information integration
products and solutions for mission critical applications, demonstrated its
INGRESlM relational database management system running on the new IBM
workstation as part of IBM press announcements in New York and San
Francisco and at joint demonstrations in 15 other major U.S. cities.
The INGRES database is remarketed by IBM and is the only product that
enables customers to access database information across IBM's AIX and
Systems Applications Architecture (SAA) platforms.
The INGRES product family includes the database manager, a powerful,
fully distributed SQL database management system; application development
tools; decision support tools; networking products; and transparent
database gateways to IBM's DB2 and SQL/DS databases. Access is provided
between IBM's AIX and SAA environments via the INGRES DB2 and SQL/DS
database gateways and the INGRES/STAR distributed data manager.
"With the announcement of the RISC System/6000, IBM has become a
major player in the Unix marketplace," said Christopher H. Greendale, vice
president of marketing. "As IBM's premier relational database partner, we
are uniquely positioned to fully support the RISC System/6000 family of
products with the latest database technology."
Greendale said Ingres Corporation's database products, world class
toolset, and distributed database technology provides application
portability across all of IBM's AIX strategic operating systems -- RISC
System/6000, PS/2, RT, and AIX/370.
INGRES is designed to take full advantage of the capabilities of the
IBM AIX 3.1 operating system and the RISC advanced file system through
facilities such as the System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) and the
Logical Volume Manager (LVM). In addition, INGRES Version 6
Client/Multi-server Architecture is optimized to work with the Micro
Channel Architecture of the RISC System/6000, and takes full advantage of
its advanced floating-point capabilities.
Applications are fully portable across all three RISC System/6000
models without recompilation, and applications created on the LBM RT are
also easily ported to the RISC System/6000. INGRES runs under the X Window
System and supports all the X.ll functionality of the RISC System/6000 and
the X Station 120.
Ingres Corporation plans to have its database products for the RISC
System/6000 available June 30, 1990. Prices will start at S5000 for a
single-user system.
Ingres Corporation is a worldwide leader in quality information
integration products and solutions for mission critical applications. The
company's primary product is the INGRES RDBMS, which enables organizations
to quickly access data spanning a variety of computer systems connected in
a network. The INGRES product suite includes tools for developing
applications and gateways for accessing data across heterogeneous computer
operating environments.
