Harlan Ellison tends to provoke strong reactions. People either stronly
like or dislike his works (or, for that matter, the man himself). He has,
however, won a large number of awards (several outside SF, including the
Edgar by the Mystery Writers of America). I personally enjoy his work, but
only if I'm in a particular mood. Ellison (like Gene Wolfe or Stanislaw
Lem) is someone that I must have the correct mental attitude to really
enjoy (This isn't mind candy, it a full meal). I've always benn
particulaly fond of "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" & "Deathbird
Stories", but "The Essential Ellison" provides the best overview of his
entire work.
