Samuel Delany writes in the literary realm of SF. His earlier stories (up
until "Nova") are well written, have vivid images, and reasonably
tradtional plot structures. Then he spent several years writing some
amazing short stories ("Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones"
& "Aye, and Gomorrah"). Then he produced "Dhalgren". "Dhalgren" produces
few ambivalent readers, people either love it or hate it. (I didn't
particularly like it when I read it 5 years ago, but I'll have to give it
another shot to see if my tastes have changed). Since then he's done
several academic works on SF, written on the "Sword & Socery" series of
Neveryon & produced "Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand" [the sequel of
which still isn't out].
