Greg Bear ususal writes in the hard-ish SF area but has writte brief
excursions into fantasy ("The Infinity Concerto"/"The Serpent Mage"). His
early work is quite readable, but his recent work ('83 forward) much more
mature and polished. I like Blood Music in particular, for a good
exploration of possible consequences of genetic engineering. Greg Bear
novels tend to have scope, a quality lacking in much of SF today.
