The file mapbrowser.tar.Z contains some Unix C programs for displaying
vector map data such as the CIA World DataBank II or the USGS Digital
Line Graph (DLG) Data.  They were developed for a Sun Unix SPARCstation
running SunOS 4.0.1 - 4.1.1 and the OpenWindows X environment.

You have to run raw map data through the ciamap program to convert it
into the format used by the mapbrowser programs.  You can do this
directly off the CD-ROM if you want.  I generated four sets of maps at
different resolutions from the USA 1:2,000,000 DLG data to improve
performance.  The total disk space required for the converted files is
only about 38 MB.

The script and map description files I used to convert are in
make_dlg_maps.tar.Z

You can also use the mapbrowser programs with data from the CIA World
DataBank II.  It is less detailed but covers the entire world.  The
disk space required for the world map data (after conversion at three
resolutions) is 17 MB.  Since this data is less detailed and has fewer
feature types and files, it is easier to work with.  I don't have the
script I used, but default.mapset is the map_profile I use for the
WDB2.  (I think "-5f6" in the map names refers to the ciamap options
"-s 5 -f 6", etc.):
