Much of  my IT work  is for a  company that sells  "beauty products"
(i.e. mostly  makeup). While  I'm essential for  the running  of the
online end of things, the business itself is certainly not essential
when viewed  alongside other  businesses that need  to operate  in a
pandemic.  Yet somehow  people seem to still be buying  the stuff we
sell  online, and  the company  seems to  be doing  just fine.   The
explanation  I heard  was that  with  the global  increase in  video
conferencing,  people still  want to  look good  on camera.   Sounds
reasonable, if  you are on  these calls  you are working,  and still
have money to spend on looking good.

So for now anyway, I still have a job. I suppose the only thing that
could  change  things would  be  an  interruption in  global  supply
chains. It's hard  to buy things online when  payment processors are
not staffed, shippers aren't shipping or trucks are not moving. Will
things get  that bad? Who  knows, but if they  do I am  certain jobs
will be the least of all of our worries.
