On January 7, 2000 MCI/WorldCom has raised the bandwidth of our US
connection between Zurich and New York Telehouse from 40 to 56 Mbps. Sin=
ce
November 1999, this connection is evenly split over two physical links w=
hich
use geographically diverse paths between Zurich and New York.

New Peerings at TIX
-------------------
In December 1999, SWITCH has installed a router at the Zurich Telehouse
Internet Exchange (TIX) (see
http://www.telehouse.ch/). The router is
connected to the SWITCHlan backbone over dark fiber from diAx.
As of January 11, 2000, peerings with the following providers have been =
set
up at TIX:
- COLT Telecom
- diAx Telecommunications
- INSnet
- Nextra

New Registration System in Operation
------------------------------------
End of November 1999 SWITCH has introduced a new software package for th=
e
registration of internet domain names. The main advantages for the user =
are
- improved protection mechanisms for data and
- shorter processing time.

During the first month of operation - December 1999 - 17'926 new domain
names were registrated: a record in the history of domain name registrat=
ion
for .ch and .li! By end of 1999 the total number of active and inactive
domain names has passed 180'000.
