Beer Brewing Bibliography
Here is a bibliography on books and magazine for home beer brewing.
I am not sure of the source of this, because I got it through a somewhat
strange path.

*BOOKS*
The Big Book of Brewing by Dave Line
Required reading. The most detailed and technical book on homebrewing.
Deals mainly with mashing (brewing from grain) but good information on hops,
water treatment, etc. Recipes and techniques based on English ingredients, some
of which aren't available here, but book is still useful. Line also has a book
on beer kits and one on imitating commercial beers, both of which are probably
good.
A Treatise on Lager Beers by Fred Eckhardt
Good stuff, if somewhat disorganized. Advanced techniques for extract
brewing. Mainly about lagers but also applies to other types of beer. Much
of what he says also applies to all-grain brewing. Eckhardt is the publisher
of The Amateur Brewer.
Brew Your Own by Scotty Morgan
"A Beginner's Mashing Manual". Not much on theory but a clear
description of what is probably the easiest mashing system (using an insulated
Igloo beverage cooler as a combination mash and lauter tun). The type of mash
described (a single temperature infusion mash) is theoretically restricted
to English malts but in practice works quite well with American malt.
Quality Brewing by Byron Burch
Good basic book on extract brewing. Burch is manager of Great
Fermentations, one of the better brewing supply outfits.
Home Brewing For Americans by Dave Miller
Fairly detailed discussion of grain brewing techniques adapted to
American ingredients. Occasionally narrow-minded but still useful.
The Art of Making Beer by Stanley Anderson and Raymond Hull
Home Brewed Beers and Stouts by C.J.J. Berry
Both of these books are somewhat dated. Berry's recipes are based on
English ingredients but the book is not as detailed or authoritative as Line.
The recipes in both of these books use too much sugar (the use of sugar as a
fermentable other than the small amount used in priming adversely affects
taste). Other than this the Anderson and Hull book is okay but is not very
"competitive."
Brewing Quality Beer at Home by Leigh Beadle
The (Reader's Digest condensed) gospel according to Beadle or
idiot-proof brewing for idiots. Beadle is an asshole who is stuck on himself
(in himself?). His basic premise is that one should know as little as possible
about what one is doing. Avoid him.
*MAGAZINES*
Zymurgy - This is the journal of the American Homebrewers Association,
who are basically a bunch of redneck beer drunks. They manage
to get some decent articles in the magazine, however, and Zymurgy
is improving noticeably. Both Zymurgy and HFD occasionally have
good articles on technique or equipment but they are also interesting
for seeing what other brewers are up to. Quarterly. $12/yr.
Home Fermenters Digest - Also covers winemaking, sometimes seemingly to the
exclusion of brewing. Not quite as slap-happy a
crowd as the AHA but HFD sometimes still seems afraid
of getting down to the nitty-gritty. Poorly produced
but cheaper than Zymurgy. Monthly. $12/yr.
The Amateur Brewer - The nitty-gritty. Concerned with the production and
promotion of good beer. More theoretically or technically
oriented than the other two. Occasionally.(Now annual
after proving unable to cope with quarterly schedule.)
$6/yr. for AB and three newsletters.
