An RK05 definitely does have 4872 blocks, and they are all useable.
DEC software only uses the first 4800 blocks;  Unix will use the
entire disk.  It is even possible to deal with the last 72 blocks
on DEC systems but you have to bypass the file system and deal
directly with the device driver (possibly with some special function
codes to bypass some types of error checking).  Dennis Rockwell
(duke!rdr I believe) and I have transferred data between DEC and
UNIX systems using this mechanism, so I have some firsthand
experience with the beast.
