Filing Status
I have been having a 1-year argument with the IRS concerning my filing
status (married vs. single).  My reading of the instructions for 1040
is that if, on December 31, the taxpayer is unmarried, divorced, or
legally separated then the taxpayer is considered single for the entire
year.  The IRS claims that inorder to qualify as single a separated but
not divorced person must (1) live apart from the spouse, (2) provide
all support independent of the spouse, and (3) have supported a child
for more thaan six months of the year.  Couples with no children are
automatically excluded under this interpretation.  Anyone had a similar
experience with the IRS?
