Hint of the week
..of particular interest to those who have either just entered or just left
an educational institution last year:

If you have moved to a new location in order to take a job at that
location, the IRS considers certain expenses incurred in the move
deductible if your present or former employer did not pay for them.
As far as the IRS is concerned, a job consists of anything which
they can collect on. Anybody who is not claimed as a dependent on
another person's return qualifies. Things you can claim include:

Cost of a trip to the area to find a place to live
Meals, lodging, transportation around your new area while looking
Cost of renting moving equipment/hiring a mover
Cost of transportation from old area to new area if you went
  back after finding a place
And lots, lots more

All this works if your new job is more than 35 miles from where you
were living before, even if your new job is only part-time (such as
a Teaching Assistant or part-time Instructor, or even (if you can
actually support yourself on such a ridiculous income) hashing
at McDonalds???). An IRS form, "Moving Expenses", is required, and
there is a publication that goes with it. Consult your 1040 for details.
