If I recall correctly, one of Harry Harrison's "Stainless Steel Rat"
stories had such a process.  Slippery Jim DiGriz (The "stainless steel
rat in a stainless steel society") was captured by the bad guys, and tortured
by killing him repeatedly, with such a cloning system.  The trouble was,
he got used to it!  So they had to stop.
