and UHF frequencies (I know you said this)  Data communications is
usually carried out in the S-band.  Voice utilizes the S-band and
the UHF band.  If all the S-band transponders fail, they can resort
to FM and PM communications.  If worse comes to worse, they can always
flicker the abort light on and off for morse code...
