Shuttle News
Columbia sailed along today, unbothered by its failed low-power
(not low-frequency, as I said this morning) S-band transponder.
Its high power transponder and a complete set of low and high
powered ones were still working, and NASA said that a shortened
mission was improbable.  At White Sands, weather looked good for
Monday's scheduled 1427 EST landing, but not good for an emergency
landing before then.  Such a landing may have to be carried out
at a 15,000 foot paved runway at the Cape or, ironically, Edwards
Air Force Base.

Meanwhile, Jack Lousma fired one of Columbia's engines that had
been in the cold for around 80 hours, and the test was perfect.
