The point is, the super-laser is emitted by a solar flare, so after
one loses a few ships, one gets the idea that every time one sees
an unusual protuberance from the sun, one ducks out of the path of
the beam.  In any case, approaches from the plane of the ecliptic are
perfectly safe because the ringworld itself provides a shield.
I still think that the ringworld defense is overly-complex and
easily replaced by a simpler and more effective system (sort of
like IBM OS/VS...)
