True Names
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the novella True Names,
written by Vernor Vinge. The story centers around illegal computer
hackers who create a different reality in various goverment and
commercial data spaces. It also contains that hoary old gadget the
mind-machine interface, but Vernor Vinge makes it work surprisingly well.
The novella is available in Binary Star #5 which also contains the
atrocious Nightflyers. The Binary Star series is reminiscent of the old
Ace double paperbacks. If you like fantasy role playing, you're sure
to like True Names.
