A record club that is actually worthwhile
For more than ten years, I have been a member of the Musical Heritage Society.
That's a name which makes you think they are associated with the
Franklin Mint or something, but they aren't.  They are presently
at 14 Park Road; Tinton Falls NJ 07724.

Their deal works as follows.  Write them a letter and they will send
you an application form.  Send back the form and one dollar and they
will send you a record of Pachelbel's Canon in D.  I know one person
who can't stand Pachelbel's Canon and told them so; they sent him
something else.  They will also put you on their mailing list.  From
now on, you get a brochure every three weeks describing their new
releases and some of their old releases.  If you do not cut out the
post card and send it back to them, they will eventually send you
two or three records from that brochure and bill you.  When you do
send back the form, you can order whatever things you like or nothing
at all.

Why do I say this is a good deal?  First, you are under no obligation.
Whenever you like, you can tell them you're no longer interested
and they'll drop you from their mailing list.  Second is the price.
They are currently charging $4.95 per record or cassette, plus 5% tax
if you live in NJ, plus $1.60 shipping per order (regardless of size).
Third is the unusual part:  they only sell their OWN label, which is
NOT available from anyone else (though a small number of record stores
seem to carry a few of their things, at much higher prices).  They
are classical music only, and their performers range from very well
known (Jean-Pierre Rampal, Maurice Andre, and the Chamber Music
Society of Lincoln Center) to the utterly obscure.  Many of their
records are pressed from recordings made by Erato (a French company).
Their catalog, which includes over 3,000 titles, lists many
well known pieces, as well as many obscure ones.  They offer,
for instance, all the Haydn symphonies, as well as the complete
piano music of Mompou.

Their recordings are generally excellent.  Many have won the
Grand Prix du Disque.  They are not listed in the Schwann
catalog, because Schwann only shows records that are routinely
available in record stores.

If you are not a member, you can order individual records for
$7.75 each plus shipping.  A strong incentive to continue membership.

Their recordings of Couperin's harpsichord music are particularly
delightful (sixteen records).
