Re: Binocular Repair
The double imaging problem sounds like a loose prism, but before
sending your binoculars for repair, check to make sure the prisms are
mounted in screwed-down clamps (not glued). Most "big name" brands
have fully adjustable, metal mounts.
I suggest you send them to the service department rather than to some
independent repair shop. Aligning prisms is tricky business at the
best of times. I speak from experience: I look after the in-house
maintenance of over 1000 microscopes; any prism alignment calls for
6 cups of coffee, a bottle of aspirin and the patience of a saint.
If at all possible, I send prism alignment problems out to the
manufacturer because I have found that independent repair shops either:
       1. Say they can't do it.     or:
       2. They screw it up even worse.     or:
       3. They send the problem to the manufacturer and charge me
twice what the manufacturer would have charged had I gone
directly to them in the first place.
If you can't find the manufacturer of your binoculars locally, let me
know and I can probably track down something for you.
