Arpanet mailing list directory
Here follows what should be a complete list of all the mailing lists
to be found on the ARPANET.  Some of these are forwarded to the USENET
as fa. groups, and others are shared as net. groups via SRI-UNIX.
I urge that USENET members not mail the moderators of these digests
to get themselves put on these lists - rather they should put an inquiry
out on the USENET about getting them forwarded to the rest of the net
through one of the linkup sites that is willing.  There are two ways
of having a group shared.  To do this, there must be a site on both the
arpanet and the USENET.  The group can be shared either by a one way
gateway or a two way one.  An alias must be set up on a gateway machine
and that alias must be put on the arpanet mailing list.  This alias should
feed to inews.  Messages the other way can be done by mail as the arpanauts
do it, or an entry can be made in the sys file of the gateway machine to
pipe news items through a shell script into mail to the digest, as long as
it can be insured that such items do not loop back.

From: Zellich at OFFICE-3 (Rich Zellich) - -
To:   MAILING-LIST COORDINATORS:
Cc:   Zellich

Thanks to all of you who responded to my request for verification of
your mailing-list entries; it was much appreciated, and will be very
helpful to others using the file.

As a reminder, the publicly-accessible file containing all the mailing-
lists, digests, etc.  that I know about is kept on OFFICE-3 in file
<ALMSA>INTEREST-GROUPS.TXT.  OFFICE-3 supports the net "standard"
ANONYMOUS login with password GUEST, ARPA, or whatever.

To all those whose mail systems choked on the presence of a Sender field
instead of a From field in my message, my apologies.  If I had known so
many systems couldn't handle that, I would have taken the simple step of
manually adding a From field before transmitting each message.  For the
near future, my message-sending system is being changed to use a
different FTP-interface mechanism - one which does not insist on
inserting a Sender field in every message; originally I had a choice of
including both fields even when they would be identical, or ignoring the
RFC733 discouragement on using Sender instead of From when only one
field was present, and decided in favor of brevity over good form.

Cheers,
Rich Zellich

HUMAN-NETS at UTEXAS-20
(or at MIT-AI)

Mailing list originally consisting of the combined memberships of
INFO-PCNET, HOME-SAT, and TELETEXT mailing lists.  Human-Nets has discussed
many topics, all of them related in some way to the theme of a world-wide
computer and telecommunications network usually called WorldNet.  The topics
have ranged very widely, from something like tutorials, to state of the art
discussions, to rampant speculation about technology and its impact.  The
list is extremely large, making it necessary to batch messages sent to the
list and distributing them once each day during off peak periods to avoid
  overloading the system.

[For further information, see the 124-line "Welcome to Human-Nets"
message in OFFICE-3 public file <ALMSA>HUMAN-NETS-WELCOME.TXT]

Two sets of archives are maintained for the HUMAN-NETS mailing list.  One is
a short term archive containing all material distributed in the last 7 days,
stored in temporal order.  The other is a permanent archive containing all
the material distributed to the list. Due to size, this archive is broken
down into several different files, stored in reverse temporal order.  The
file names and contents of the files are:

     On MIT-AI:

        COMMON;HUMAN_ NETS    [last 7 days]
        DUFFEY;_DATA_ HUMNET  [current - V4 # 41]

  Coordinator:  Karl A. Nyberg <NYBERG AT USC-ECLB>
[see above note on list-maintenance correspondence]

INFO-PCNET at MIT-MC

PCNET is a volunteer effort to create a computer network for personal use,
that is for whatever use a person wants to use it for without the kinds of
restrictions that most existing networks have (ARPANET forbids commercial
use, EDUNET forbids any use except education, TYMNET/TELENET don't support
host-to-host communication nor user-to-user communication), and without the
shortsided communication barriers that company-funded networks have
(MicroNET keeps their protocols secret so nobody can interface to them,
UUCP-net hasn't documented their protocols legibly, DIALNET is so complicted
only a large computer system can implement it).

PCNET is trying to create a network where all computers, large or small,
part of a formal network organization or just isolated privately
owned-and-operated computers, can communicate with each other effectively.
PCNET has defined communication protocols that verify all data is correct
(retransmitting data that is lost or garbaged) and which provides multiple
logical data streams so that processes can send control and data information
on different streams and so that several programs can share a single
hardware communication link.  PCNET has defined a worldwide addressing
standard that permits automatic forwarding of messages and files without
having to know the topology of the network a priori.

PCNET is presently finishing software on several machines (8080, 6502,
PDP-10) using several languages (Assembly language, LISP, C), and perfecting
its documentation, but as always is having difficulty getting enough
volunteer labor to complete these tasks. INFO-PCNET is a general mailing
list to keep random interested people advised of the major developments
accomplished and to repeatedly solicit volunteer labor from interested
  people.

Documentation is available on MIT-MC in the file PCNET;INTRO > (this is the
latest introductory documentation, written by John Gilmore <GNU AT MIT-AI>
and updated somewhat by Robert Maas).

David Harris is the organizational leader and is in charge of releasing
  documents to the public:
     David C. Harris <G.HARRIS AT SU-SCORE>
     Palo Alto ABBS: (415) 493-7691 (300 baud - type a <CR>)

  Mailing-list maintainer: Robert Elton Maas <REM MIT-MC AT>

INFO-PRINTERS at MIT-AI

  Information on printers.

All requests to be added to or deleted from this list, etc., should be sent
  to INFO-PRINTERS-REQUEST at MIT-AI.

  Coordinator: Eric L. Flanzbaum <ELF AT MIT-DMS>

INFO-TERMS at MIT-MC

  Information on terminals.

     Message log/archives are kept at:

MIT-MC:CPR;TERMS MAIL     Current section of archives
MIT-MC:CPR;TERMS 1        The latest archives created
                         2        The next archive file
                            etc...

The old 1 and 2, and so forth, will eventually get put on tape as disk
        space becomes scarce.

All requests to be added to or deleted from this list, etc., should be sent
  to INFO-TERMS-REQUEST at MIT-MC.

[see above note on list-maintenance correspondence]

INFO-VAX at SANDIA

INFO-VAX is a discussion of VAX-11/780's and 750's.  Typically the material
is question-and-answer, where someone wants information on some program or
bug/feature.  Both UNIX and VAX/VMS operating systems are discussed.

Archived messages are kept at SANDIA in the file:

     <RUTGERS.JSOL>INFO-VAX.ARCHIVE

Coordinator: Jonathan Alan Solomon <JSOL AT USC-ECLB>

LOCAL-NETS at MIT-MC

Sharing experience with local networking projects between sites currently
involved in or soon to attempt such projects; basically a very
praxis-oriented discussion about networking -20's, VAXen, and -11's.
Subjects include DECnet, Ethernet, Chaosnet as well as simple tty line
links; both hardware and software aspects.

NOTE:  A/O 10 Feb 82, this list is fairly dead, though still open for
  business.

  Messages are archived in
     MIT-MC:CPR;LCLNET MAIL

  Coordinator: Chris Ryland <RYLAND SRI-KL AT>

[SRI-KL]<MICRO>MAILING-LIST.TXT.*

Interest in microcomputers, micro languages, operating systems, etc.  The
focus of the mailing list is really on microprocessor development tools such
as cross-assemblers and PROM downloaders, but includes the idea of libraries
of useful microprocessor software.  Community files are maintained in MICRO
  at SRI-KL.

  Coordinator: Dave Fylstra <FYLSTRA SRI-KL AT>

MsgGroup at MIT-ML

Interest in electronic mail, message formats, message systems, and the
  sociological implications of the above.

Archives are kept at USC-ECL in files <MSGGROUP>MSGGROUP.*, where * stands
for a range of messages, in blocks of 100 (from 0001 thru 1100) or 50 (from
  1101 on up) (MSGGROUP.0001-0100, MSGGROUP.0101-0200, MSGGROUP.1101-1150,
etc.).  As of 9 Feb 82, the last file was *.1651-1700.

Coordinator: EStefferud at USC-ECL/MsgGroup at USC-ECL

POLI-SCI at MIT-AI

POLI-SCI is a spinoff from the HUMAN-NETS discussion list.  Shortly after
the November (1980) election, HUMAN-NETS began to discuss the impact that
electronic communications had on the election.  As this discussion
continued, it lost its narrow focus on electronic communications and began
to consider the election in general, how elections are won and lost, and the
nature of the electoral college.  The growth of these discussions, and their
spawning of related discussions, indicated that a separate discussion list
was merited and POLI-SCI was installed.  Since then POLI-SCI has begun to
consider other topics including the history of the Carter and Nixon
presidencies, the Iranian hostage crisis, etc. (with a little less dignity,
the list might be characterized as a permanent distributed political bull
  session).

Archived digest messages are stored at:

     MIT-AI:DUFFEY;_DATA_ POLISC

All requests to be added to or deleted from this list, reports of
transmission failure, etc., should be sent to POLI-SCI-REQUEST at MIT-AI.

RAILROAD at MIT-MC

  Information on prototype railroading.

Coordinator:  Was Chuck Weinstock, who no longer has access to MIT-MC.
There is no current coordinator/mailing-list maintainer.

SF-LOVERS at MIT-AI

Science Fiction lovers.  The digest has a very large number of readers, and
trivial messages are strongly discouraged due to the heavy load SF-LOVERS
puts on the hosts CPU and disk space.  Messages to SF-LOVERS@MIT-AI are
batched and broadcast once a day.

Archived digest messages are kept at:

     MIT-AI:DUFFEY;_DATA_ SF
     MIT-AI:DUFFEY;_DATA_ SFn
     MIT-AI:DUFFEY;_DATA_ SF2
     MIT-AI:DUFFEY;_DATA_ SF1
...in order from most recent in "SF" to oldest in "SF1"

All requests to be added to or deleted from this list, reports of
transmission failure, etc., should be sent to SF-LOVERS-REQUEST at MIT-AI.

  Coordinator:  S. W. Galley <SWG AT MIT-DMS>

SPACE at MIT-MC

Discussions (daily digest) on space-related topics.

Archives are kept on [S1-A]SPACE.LOG[SPA,OTA], which, unfortunately, does
not allow FTP without login.  Requests for back issues should be directed to
  SPACE-REQUEST at MIT-MC.

Requests to be added to the mailing-list, problems, etc., also go to
  SPACE-REQUEST at MIT-MC.

Aliases for the above net-addresses are:

TCP-IP at MIT-AI [or at BRL]  (ARPANET)
!menlo70!hao!brl-bmd!tcp-ip  (UUCP/USENET)

A digest which discusses TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and IP
(Internet Protocol), the "DoD Standard Networking Protocols for the
Eighties".  Submissions generally center around UNIX implementations, but
ANY networking protocol or implementation discussions too specific for
HUMAN-NETS is fair game here; the digest includes discussions of mail
protocols and addressing in the InterNet environment, and a little about
  non-TCP/IP based networking.

Archives are kept at the Rutgers host in:  <TCP>MAIL.TXT

Requests to be added to the mailing-list, problems, etc., not to be
published in the digest go to TCP-IP-REQUEST at MIT-AI [or at BRL] (ARPANET)
  or !menlo70!hao!brl-bmd!tcp-ip-request (UUCP/USENET).

station computer, the Three Rivers Corporation PERQ, or the recently
announced Xerox STAR.  WorkS provides a way for interested members of the
ARPANET community to discuss what is wrong with these machines, compare
notes on work in progress, and share useful insights about these kinds of
systems.  Mail may also be sent to WorkS at MIT-MC or WorkS at BRL.

A special address has been established for descriptive/biographical
infomation about list members, so we each know where the others are coming
