marketing research
I for one would hate to give a carte blanche for use of the net for
marketing research, even though I believe it to be legal unless it
percolates over to the ARPAnet.  I confess to mixed emotions on this
particular issue, though, because I am intensely interested in the
results of the survey that started this discussion.  Perhaps the
ground rules might state that the results of any such survey must
be published within two weeks, and the raw replies must be available
to anyone who requests them -- this should certainly discourage
a lot of marketing surveys, as it would take away the commercial
advantage without necessarily stopping those cases where people
are really interested.

As a matter of plain fact there is nothing wrong with people
having commercial advantages and making money.  My only objection
is personal; it might clog the communications paths I use.
Legally I don't see any difference between a USENET survey and
a voice phone survey, except that intermediate sites pay
some of the phone bills and might object.  The objection is
valid, but their participation in the net is voluntary.  They
don't HAVE to forward everything that comes in.  (Obviously I
am not a lawyer; this opinion is personal.)
